patch 1.74 sabotaged Civ 4. how do I fix it?

Yesterday when we went to play Civ4 we got the download new patch dialog, we downloaded it and during the installation received an error stated that it could not find the Civ 4 source and then the installation "finished." After that the game will not run. We tried uninstalling the game, but the uninstall fails. I've tried running setup on the original disk, but it says there is a newer version installed and that I have to run uninstall first, which, as I said, fails. I downloaded the full 1.74 patch and tried running that again, failed again on the same error stating that it couldn't find the "source." I have window 7 and my computer is less then a year old. Short of going in and editing the registry, how to I fix this huge patch fiasco since I can't seem to install or uninstall the game?? BTW, I just have basic Civ 4, no expansions. Thanks.

Could have done with a bit more info at this point, as this determines the next course of action.

Let me know what happens when you try to run it and I will tell you what fixes that. No problem.

    Thank you for responding!

Well, at this point I erased everything involving Civ 4 off my computer by going into my C: drive and manually erasing the files. Thought that might work, but the Control Panel still says I have Civ 4 and I'm unable to uninstall it from there. This is the error I get:

    Error Code: -5005 : 0x80004003
    Error Information:
    >Kernel\KernelMedia.cpp (94)
    >SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (0)

So I put in the original game disk that I purchased and try to run the setup.exe to install. This fails and says I have a newer version 1.74 installed on my computer and to erase that first. I'm trying to install version 1.61 i think. I don't even play online. I just want to play the computer again. If you need more information just ask and I'll find it for you.

Nope, that is more than enough information. I have been here for a few years now and have dealt with this exact issue about 7 million billion times.

Firstly let me say that there is a signifcant difference between uninstalling a game and straight-up deleting it all. What you need now is a 'manual uninstall'.

    - Open Computer then open the Local Disk ( C: )
    - Open the Program Files folder.
    - In Windows XP: Click on the Tools menu then choose Folder Options.
    - In Windows Vista: click on the Organize menu and choose Folder and Search Options.
    - Click on the view tab.
    - Ensure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected in the list.
    - Press Apply then OK.
    - Open the Installshield Installation Information folder.
    - Search for a folder named:

    {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3BF-D6E01F4112E8} Civilization IV
    {55502C49-F061-428C-BF26-06ECDFB3AC29} Civilization IV: Gold

(I have included the folders for all versions of Civ)

    - Right click on the folder and choose rename.
    - Press the End key on the keyboard and type the word OLD.
    - Press the enter key.
    - Open Computer
    - Right click on the drive containing the game disc and choose Explore/Open.
    - Locate the application file called Setup.exe and double click on it to start the installation.

This will replace and overwrite any missing components that were preventing the game from being uninstalled or reinstalled normally.

Now at this point, when done, you have the retail version installed, but it will not be ready to go.

Download and install the patches from www.firaxis.com . First download and install 1.61 and then 1.74. With the 1.74 patch you may well receive and error message (right at the end of installation) regarding installation failure. This will not be the case and the patch will have worked. However, when launching the game, you will most likely encounter a DirectX error involving a .dll file. Should that be the case then follow these instructions:

The "d3dx9_33.dll error" issue you've encountered stems from not having the latest update of Direct X 9c installed on your machine. To fix this problem, please download and install the latest version of DX from the following link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Download the file in to a folder anywhere (best call it DX9) and then when you click on it it will ask you to extract it.
Choose the same folder, and then from the extraction run the dxsetup.exe.
Allow it to install and then restart the system.

    -----------------

If that doesn't fix it then you read it wrong

Wow. It works. It worked without having to download the newer patches or direct x updates. I'm just happy it works again. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

except one thing.... (i know i know) My game appears to lag after a few minutes of play. 2 minutes its normal speed and then for another 2 minutes its lagging and shifty then back to normal. It's like the game is operating at halfspeed all of a sudden. It was actually starting to do this before I tried the 1.74 patch. I thought that might help the choppyness. whoops.

Any ideas on how to stop the choppyness? I heard someone once tell me to adjust my Vsynch in my graphics card. I didnt know what that meant or how to do it. I have windows 7. Thanks.

You are awesome for helping me. I really appreciate it.

Just trying to do my job. A job I really enjoy.

Choppyness, right, several things could cause this. I give a little list and if you want to look a little further in to this, ask me and I'll expand on it.

-Graphics drivers. Remember the last time they were updated, if ever at all? Do you know what handles the graphics (GPU)?
-Background applications. Consider what else the system is doing, look at msconfig 'startup' tab, and Processes under Task Manager
-Firewall/anti-virus. Several such applications are guilty of checking on games every few minutes as opposed to when it is launched, hogging system resources. There may be an option to add the game's .exe to an exception list.

    Ok. Let's see...

First, let me say that I've played Civ 4 for a year on this computer with no choppyness. It just suddenly started a few weeks ago and made gameplay horribly slow.

i've tried playing civ4 with literally no other applications or programs in use. still choppy. I checked taskmanager... nothing seemed out of place there. I have noticed zero other problems on my computer with other programs, games, etc. No choppyness or slow processing I mean.

My graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 9100. I have not updated the drivers since I bought the computer 12/2009. I don't know what handles the graphics GPU? sorry.

I have a AMD II X4 Processor 2.60GHz and 6 Gig of RAM.

I find it strange that it was fine for so long and now intermediately choppy. Maybe I need to download updates for my graphics card or something? I don't know I'm out of ideas here.

    thanks again.

Well if it was fine and now not there will be an explanation. If that sort of thing "just happened" it would make this the most difficult and essentially redunadant job going

So, more than likely something has been installed/uninstalled/updated/re-configured to prompt this change.

New anti-virus/firewall application may be interacting/interferring with the game. This may be linked to the Windows Security Centre and will be under the Services* tab of msconfig as opposed to the Startup tab.

(*do not disable anything in here other than something that you know is an application you installed, should you look in there)

Create a new Windows user account and check the performance of the game, maybe?

I do not think that 2009 drivers would be an issue. It is sensible to keep on top them with the updating but in this situation, on a 2005 game, I can not see it making a great deal of difference - you could however update those, fix the issue and then prove me wrong

I updated the graphics cards drivers, but the game still goes in and out with lagging and choppyness.

The only thing I can think of at this point is that something keeps checking on the game (firewall perhaps) or some program keeps running every few minutes. I do not have any other anti spyware programs or anything besides windows. I did a hardware diagnostics test on my whole computer and everything passed.

How would I tell windows firewall not to bother Civ? Is that possible? I'm determined to figure out why this is happening! It's ruining a great freakin' game.

I tried the 1.74 patch remember. it was a disaster. Im nervous to do that again.

    Civ IV issues

So I am trying to reinstall Civilization IV Gold Edition on my new computer and I am getting this issue as soon as Disc 1 begins to try setup:

    Error Code: -5005 : 0x80070017
    Error Information:
    >Kernel\KernelMedia.cpp (95)
    >Kernel\KernelMedia.cpp (95)
    >SetupNew\SetupDLL.cpp (1065)

Any suggestions on how to fix/work this? Thank you in advance.

Also, I tried the previous fix (dated 12-05-2010 from Tech Ian) but those files do not exist on this computer.

MAJOR necro, I know, but I did all of these steps and then when I tried to launch the game I got the error message "unable to load shader libraries."
