Is it using Unreal Engine 3?
Is it using Unreal Engine 3?
A highly modified Unreal Engine 2.5 last I heard. 3dR added a lot of there own physics and other programming.
You can read more about it at Gearbox

They manipulated the Unreal 2 engine to do things specifically for this game. To hear a developer talk about it, it's a completely different engine.
But the Unreal 2 Engine is plenty capable, and we already know the graphics are acceptable - it'll be interesting if they did some innovations that will make it into new incarnations of today's game engines.
Otherwise, I could care less about the engine - it's the one issue that seems to haunt George, and he even talks about it in recent interviews.
In theory, importing old ideas and assets into a new engine seems very feesable and necessary just to keep it from being a budget bin game, but he sometimes talks about how the engine changes managed to throw the team into unexpected complications - Hindsight is 20/20.
I'm glad he did try to keep up with the times - all this speculation about which engine and what it can do is exactly what he was worried about. When you spend all your money and soul into making a great game, the last thing you want is some smart ass gamer saying "looks dated, what engine is this?"![]()
So it is using Bioshocks engine. I have no problem with that, it means my 5 year old computer should be able to run it fine
True the constant need to stay with the newest engines is what did George in, and it was not nessacary. You can take an older engine and do some pretty spectacular things with it. Graphics are not that important anymore, since all engine graphics have been lookin good enough for years. Look at RTCW (2001)...those graphics look damn near as good as any of todays, at least to the novice! And Doom III is still top notch graphically.
Of course Im not one that really cares about graphics anyway, I was always more concerend with gameplay. Mabye that's why when I play Duke 3D maps even now, I play em in old 8 bit mode instead of 32 bit polymost.![]()
They'll say that anyways about any and every game released.
From what I understand, the engine change wasn't so much about graphics as it was other things like the interactivity.
Everything has been rewritten that it should be called the DNF engine now.
Which is why George has said that they should have built their own engine from the start.
It's a good choice, when I hear Unreal Engine 3 I think more of it's performance issues than of it's 'awesome graphics'.
