Who the heck is Winston Hoffner?

It might be something completly stupid to talk about, but is anybody else curious about who this person is? You see his photo at least twice, once at a door to a french liquor/tobacco shop outside where you find the gun and another time in the receptionist room to Eternal Flame, and it just seems odd that the name would be included and the face displayed on multiple occasions for absolutely no reason. Tried seeing if it was a real person of that era but came up with nothing...

i assumed it was one of steinman's "works" but it never talks about him directly in any diaires.

I don't think it was one of his works... or if it was, it was an early and botched one. The pictures say "In loving memory of Winston Hoffner", and the first portrait has flowers and a bear near it, indicating that he died at a time when people still... well, cared if people were dead and took care of the body and whatnot.

My first thought was that it might be someone one of the devs knew who died as the game was being made, so they put in an ingame memorial.

That's definitely a thought... if that's the case, I wonder if he really looked like that or if the name is all they have in common. Perhaps I'm simply too curious, come to think of it.

Or maybe... wild conspiracy theory here...

He was an early "recruit" for the Big Daddy project. One of the first to have himself grafted to the suit. It would makes sense that a doctor of some sort would be needed to graft flesh into a suit like that.

    /shrug

Or maybe it means nothing at all. Damn it, Ken! DAMN IT ALL!

Someone needs to electro bolt ken until he's willing to fill in these little details. It's maddening!

i thought in that room i saw one pic of Winston that looked normal, and then one that looked like he was sewn up and disfigured....can any one confirm it, it should be in the same room right across from each other.

Yup I saw the same thing. Maybe it was one of Stienman's patients?

Edit Button'd be nice, found 2 wiki hits

List of famous Suicides, last name hit: Seth "Cherry" Hoffner, (Prison Break), hanging

and also from an old show or something, "honorverse" there are characters named both Winston and Hoffner. probably a coincidence but just wanted to throw those up there.

They started making the Big Daddies after the war broke out, AFAIK, so during the war very few people would care about the deceased.

Don't forget there ARE suppose to be some normal people hiding in places, like Dr. Langford. There's a large part of Rapture that's cut off from Jack (like "Point Neptune" mentioned in the Hole-in-the-wall tape). I've wondered if some of the "normals" are hiding in the top floors in the Artimes (with dogs, handy for protection and snacks. You can hear them barking) and else where.
Anyway, these normals still there could have been the ones leaving the flowers for Hoffner's memory. By the way, isn't that Hoffner in the coffin? If it is, he didn't become a Big Daddy. They would have had to use a coffin a LOT bigger to hold the body and the suit grafted.

they might just rip the suit off by force and then graft his skin back on. the suits were loads more expensive than him.

Sadly, that's not the worse idea to explain it in Rapture..

Oh, by the way, I might be a little stupid, but who's "Mr. Coswell"?

I get a funny feeling it's some sort of in-joke.

I still think that he is a in-game tribute to someone on the team. But who knows he could be in that coffin.

O yea, where do u hear those dogs barkin?

Artemis Suites. They seem to come from one of the floors blocked above, but hard to tell with all the yelling, screaming, and shooting. (Ahh.. Makes me homesick. Sounds just like Thanksgiving..)

    Winston Hoffner found?

In the Welcome To Rapture level, there's a tobocco store (Le Marquis D'Epoque) where you find the Pep bar (just before you get the revolver). The Pep bar is scatterd in among some flowers in front of a framed portrait of Winston Hoffner(same as found in the funeral home later).

Just a guess, but I'm thinking he was either an employee or the owner of the store.

Noone's responded to this thread in two years, at least one year before I even played the game...

But damnit, I want to know who Winston Hoffner is!!

Maybe its a setup for the sequel? Maybe he's Subject Delta?
