How to counter unhappiness in latest mods

Playing mods with unofficial patches and the happiness penalty is even more severe for each city founded. I find myself very quickly -20+ unhappiness. Ok so I expand slower but if I do this the AI gathers up most of the vacant spaces where I might have been and I am stuffed either way. Even with happiness resources I cannot get back into the black and with finances also. Yet I notice that the AI can merrily expand seemingly without these penalties. My production stagnates as a result.

Only other alternative is to attack an AI sooner rather than later, as the game does not seem to reward peacemaking as opposed to warmongering. As a matter of interest the modified version is much more challenging than vanilla, and I would guess more players use the mods section. But this is frustrating, so I must be doing something wrong. I can stick with 4 cities on a large map after that there seems to be a minus 7 penalty for each city, and that is very hard to rectify, even with trading etc.

Maybe those mods are not well balanced? what mods are these? And how do you do on normal rules?

Changes to Tech tree, social policies and many others affecting balanced play.

Far too many to mention. Have not played vanilla much since I purchased the game. Maybe I should not play mods, but the I thought these improved the game.

Depends on your taste I suppose. I usually play vanilla sometimes with scenario or map mods. Nevertheless you will always need to keep an eye on happiness. It is you main limiting factor to expansion.

Just tried 125 turns in Vanilla and I notice it takes a lot longer to build cities/research, and happiness reduces by around 4 each city. My framerate is also higher average around 60fps and most important no crash using DX10/11. What does that ell you?

I have not tried playing mod's yet so I cannot answer your question. However, if you are not mentioning the specific modifications you are enabling, is this question not meaningless?
