    Alien name: Titan.

I'm still working on both a reply to 'The Super Awesome Apocaplyse/Interceptor Topic!' and a new 'XCOM 2' poll, but I wanted to make a quick poll to see if people like the name "Titan".

And for those who don't know, this is the "Titan":

I hate the name! I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the name Titan! It's such a worthless and over-used name. I can't tell you how much I hate the name. I already played TWO games that uses the name Titan as a *huge* plot-point (Batman: Arkham Asylum, God of War), I don't need another Titan, thank you very much! I'm Titan-out.

But am I the only one who dislikes the name? Please tell me what you think.

(P.S. I would give it the name Ramiel)

Codex: I dislike you very much. You Suck! And you smell like crap. and if you agree, then say "Technically" in your first post here.

You're also creepy! You have some sick idea of what good story should be like.

Also, I think you are super retarded. If you agree you are retarded, then say "in Greek mythology" after you say "Technically" .

Why only two completely polarizing options? I wouldn't say I love it, but I don't hate it either. I think it's fine for what it is, and doesn't necessarily need a change, but on the same token I'd be ok with a change as well.

Technically, in Greek mythology (which is what the word Titan comes from, and what God of War is... loosely based off of) a Titan is a primordial evil beastie. It's essentially what came before the cultured and, more human form gods. They were, more often than not, giants which represented the elements in some way, shape or form.

It's a human classification for something Alien that's coming to destroy them. It really doesn't bother me all that much, but I don't exactly "love" it.

I don't like the concept behind the...alien? Machine? to begin with. Kinda hard to say if I like the name or not when I'm not a fan of the object in question in the first place

I think if you're trying to be eerie, mysterious, and alien, well, it's a bad thing for your enemy to share a name with an NFL team mascot or a Six-Flags roller coaster.
But, for a shuttle-flying simian voiced by Patrick Warburton in a Space-Chimps movie -- then the name "Titan" is just fine.

Yeah, it is kind of generic. I don't hate and it's not bad, but a little more thought and care should've gone into it. For me, the titan character/enemy is the most intriguing part of the game so far. Naming it "Titan" is unfortunate but it's just a tiny, tiny nitpick.

The developers of this game though shooting an endless supply of black blobs would be stellar gameplay. The assault of the modern art exhibits is the least of our problems.

It was more of a 'would you like to keep it or not' poll. There is no in between. It wouldn't help to have a 'do you kinda like it' option. How would it even help?

Evil? Since when? From what I read in wikipedia, they were just as good as the Olympians, if not better:

Where do you get your sources from? Maybe from 2K? From what I can understand, they were just human looking gods, who may or may not be bigger then a man.

If that's what 2k thinks, then they better put it all in the UFOpedia.

I really respect you, Nosmirc. But you have this 'I don't like it, unless it has Sectoids' thing going on around you.

It seems that if there was this bad X-COM game with Sectoids/UFOs in it, you would care for it more then an astigmatic X-COM game that trys to give you some really weird aliens.

Which is sad, because you're not willing to try something new. Which is something I always hated about the Star Trek/Wars nerds, because they go on, and on, about how great Trek/Wars is (' the old Star Wars is the greatest!' ' Star Trek is the greatest!' ). But these old nerds would **never** try something new, like anime. In fact, they deal with anime in two ways: one, they ignore it, as if it didn't exist. Or two, they treat it like sh*t. I know, because I've seen them do this. (Just look at RedLetterMedia)

You, Nosmirc, are not like that. But you do seem to keep to the old ways.

Actually, it does make it a lot more fair, since nearly everyone who has answered has said "I neither love it or hate it." Polarized options are useless if you want to get a proper idea of what the populace thinks.

I don't understand why wikipedia is separating "primordial gods" from "titans." I've honestly never seen that done before. All the textbooks I've ever read on the Greeks has the Titans as members of the primordial gods. So... *shrugs* Maybe years and years of study from some of the best historical minds in the world has been completely undone by a few spotty teenagers on the weekend. My mistake.

Oh crap, did it come out as something rude?

I didn't mean to, it's just that.... it seens old X-COM fans just want two things from this game: TBS and Sectoids. How can I put it in any other way?

Yes, but how will 2k know if people like the name or not? they are not going to change it, unless we telll them it's bad.

But your Profile says you are 21? Aren't you a bit young to be talking down to teenagers?

At least I found a new name for the Titan: Protogenoi! It's new, glamorous, and exciting! I found it when I was looking up "primordial gods".

Didnah say anythin' a'boot Secties, just saying...think the Titan in general is a silly concept.

Although I think there's a bigger issue at hand. We're not seeing a cast of aliens that one would look to and say "these are an intelligent race of aliens". The closest is the fake house wife. And frankly, that makes them boring. As boring, if not more so, then the xenomorphs of Aliens.

I hope they'll start showing off some that actually appear to be intelligent, and make use of technologies (we've yet to see how the Titan factors into that category...)

Ultimately, I still think they should have stuck to traditional UFO lore for their aliens and tech.

I.... don't know what to say.

I want something like Neon Genesis Evangelion aliens. You know, ENEMYs that are UNKNOWN.

You want Storm trooper aliens ('There he is! Blast him!'), which I find boring, because..... Oh forget it! I don't have the will.

Look, just go to 50:53 of the video:
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...5168779169993#

I know him only as 'GooseGoose', and what he says about aliens is true. If you like this video above, he made two more

................What the BEEP is that supposed to mean?
Because they don't have human faces? Because they aren't holding guns?

Does that mean the Vorlons and Shadows from Babylon 5 aren't "intelligent"?

    What about Cthulhu?
    Or even The Chmmr?

For someone who likes Sci-fi, you don't have a very good imagination. The Chenjesu were a RACE of TALKING CRYSTALS. Don't you think the "Titan" and Chenjesu are a bit alike?

Maybe you're unhappy, because these are the dogs, robots, and *"arms"* behind the real aliens, and you don't like that because you want to shoot something with 2 arms and a head..... Or something.

You haven't given me any real reason why you hate them. Is it because you don't like Evangelion aliens? Or is it because you want to feel like Duke Nukem? (i.e. shooting brainless bad guys you love to hate and talk down to.)

Another problem is you want to see the real aliens behind the power, because you think it makes it cooler. I think showing the aliens is a bad idea.

To show you this, here's another video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSImwGBEDPs

In the video, Kosh is being killed by the Shadows, but you never get to see the fight. Why? Because Straczynski himself said that there was nothing he can think of, that would have been anything more then disappointing:
    ---------------
Straczynski: I thought about that long and hard when writing the script, and I finally came to the conclusion that there was literally *nothing* we could show that wouldn't be disappointing...it's a conflict on another whole plane, and should have an almost cosmic or ethereal feel to it. If we showed Kosh shooting a defensive field, or a shadow opening his suit with a can opener, or anything else obvious and physical, it would've diminished the scene. The vorlons are mythic, indirect, you see them out of the corner of your eye, so it fit that the proper metaphor would be to handle the battle that way.

Even if we'd had ten million bucks to do that sequence...I would've made the same choice.
    ---------------------

It's the same thing with these XCOM's aliens. They don't want to show some alien with a gun, because it wouldn't feel cosmic, would it?

Why am I reminded of kicking a hornets nest? lol.

I ask that you restrain your claims of my lack of imagination. There's a reason for what I said.

NGE's aliens are simply a bad fit for an X-Com game. That should be evident in the fact that teenagers operating giant organic mechs were required to even attempt to fight them (and ultimately ended up being futile, because humanity got turned into orange slop and everyone died anyways...)

The fact is, the mystery is a limited thing, and it will fade rapidly. Better to have a more believeable enemy that we CAN understand, but only through hard work and researching their stuff.

................What the BEEP is that supposed to mean?
Because they don't have human faces? Because they aren't holding guns?

    Or even The Chmmr?
Pardon me, I really ought to have used the phrase "technology using race". That's one of the defining aspects of X-Com. Reverse engineering the enemies tech to use against them. I'm skeptical that our current cast of aliens that we've been shown will fall into that category.

And I think it's important that an X-Com game have that. In every game, it's about uncovering what their goals are, and how they intend to accomplish them so we can defend against them. And most importantly, where their weak point is so we can deliver a killing blow to their forces.

You mention Cthulhu. Well, lets ask this question. Which would work better in the framework of an X-Com game? The Fishmen of Innsmouth, or The Colour out of Space? Sure, Colour is interesting, mysterious, and utterly alien....but there's no means to use conventional tactics on it. The Fishmen, while being alien in their own right, have a defined hierarchy, and are relatable enough that conventional tactics can work on them. Morale, cover, etc. The Colour? You cannot hit it, you cannot kill it, let alone harm it, you can't even communicate with it. It's THAT alien. It's something that's essentially beyond description.

That brings me to this next point:

It's the same thing with these XCOM's aliens. They don't want to show some alien with a gun, because it wouldn't feel cosmic, would it?
I don't deny that the Vorlons and the Shadows were interesting concepts. They're just a poor fit for an X-Com game. Think about it for a moment. We're going to be facing these enemies constantly throughout the game. If their abilities are so cosmic, so alien that they are nigh indescribable...2k would never be able to depict them in action in a believable fashion. I'm not even convinced they can pull it off with blobs.

If someone wants to make a game about duking it out with such an enemy, fine. But X-Com's framework is just not the battleground.

In any case, I think we're a little bit off topic lol.

    Okay, I apologize.

You made it a little more clearer in what you want, thank you.

But I really don't feel like replying to the other points you made. So I guess this post will have to do for now.

Where is the option "It shouldn't be in the game!"

The graphics department is getting a little to lazy.

    Oh look I made a Titan! http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...nk/Titan-1.jpg

I don't mind it, but there could have been something a little more imaginative...... Maybe they will see the negativity and try something new? I don't mind it it's not bad..
