Thread: The patching process sucks!

    The patching process sucks!

I started having some graphical glitches after experimenting with different resolutions in CIV5, and so I decided to uninstall and re-install the game. Just did that, and upon running Steam again, it loaded two files. So, patching done, no?

Not even close. Went to Civilization 5 "Properties" and "Verify Game Cache", just to make sure I was all patched up. Process took a few minutes, and the result was "1 files failed to validate and will be reacquired".

So it DIDN'T finish patching after all - there was more to be had. Ok, that done, I decided to try verifying game cache again, just to make sure... and you guessed it, another file failed to validate and "will be reacquired".

I've repeated this process six times now, going on the seventh, and each time it finds something new to download. Who knows how many I've got left to go.

Why, oh why doesn't it download everything in one go, like any sensible patching system would do?

Imagine the experience of someone who buys the game righ now - they don't know that their game hasn't been fully patched after they install, and steam downloads the first two files. So they run the game, and get the experience people were complaining weeks ago. Probably it'll update one file at a time, each time they re-launch Steam.

This is a MAJOR, MAJOR flaw in the update system that needs to be addressed ASAP.

Well one file isn't the same as one patch. Obviusly something has gone wrong with your install, its most likely the same file you keep downloading every time.

I suggest you try deleting it and reinstall the entire thing again if it keeps failing verify. Or just play anyway, it might be a bug in the "verify" process and i'll bet your game have been fully patched since steam finished updating it.

Your conclusion that people will play an unpatched game is dead wrong.

This is terrible advice. This is a known issue with steam patching Civ 5. There are countless reports of people experiencing the same issue. I've got the issue as well.

So, what's the answer here - am I downloading and redownloading the same file again and a again, or downloading something new each time?

I'm on my 12th download now.

Love how you just drop by to bash my efforts at helping, completely ignoring the OP'er. You could atleast tell him what you know from the "countless reports on the issue".

Haven't tried yet - but if it's some patch or fix missing, I doubt that I'd be able to notice the difference very quickly. After 14 repeats of this process, I'm begining to think that I'm probably just downloading the same file again and again, and it's installed, and the verification process is simply flawed. So I'm going to stop doing this and just play. I hope I'm fully patched up, but who knows.

Would be nice for someone from 2K to comment on this issue.

From what I understand: a program works in a specific order. So, you are downloading the same file each time, and something on your end is failing to receive it. Delete all files, temp files, whatever... Reinstall entire game. Should be fine.

I have the excact same problem.
Each time i run "verify integrity of game cache" it finds 1 files (yes it says files :P ).
Would be nice if it could tell us witch file it is , and how about a notification when it actually redownloads that file ?

I wish Steam would be an option , and not required. But then again both steam and civ5 seems to be equally buggy and badly coded.

    Edit:
to above poster, no reinstalling, even redownloading the entire game didn't help

You can tell (IIRC) which file that it keeps reacquiring by looking at the dates and time etc on the file itself within the Civ V folder.

For me it seems to be the direct x 11 executable that continually needs to be re-downloaded. Not all the time, as on an odd occasion it will verify them as all being ok but sometimes it will insist on downloading that 1 files(s).

Yup - I have just completely downloaded and installed the game again. This time I opened up the olfer it was installed to and verified the local files. One file(s) failed and I saw the file...

    CivilizationV_DX11.exe

    change as it reacquired it.

I am kidding here. Just remember it's your fault, it is not Steams fault. Remember all the Steam fans said it's impossible to have any problems with Steam at all. Even when it was said that people are having problems with Steam, they were told by Steam fans that it was thier fault, they did something wrong.

I wish I could help. All you can do is post in the tech issues forum here for advice, or go on the Steam forums and ask there, or Call up Steam and ask for help that way.

    *edit*

Can you play at all? What if you do not validate your files? Can you still play the game then?

There isn't a solution to the problem that I have been able to find. Use the search feature rather than trolling people. First you give bad advice, then you get your panties in a twist and make more bad assumptions and posts. Way to go you!

For many of us, the DX9 version will not run. This is the case for me.
