Need to be able to have unit do nothing when on city

I have a unit, my only military unit, on a city. I also have a settler there and a barbarian nearby. So I need to keep my unit there.

However, the game does not give the option to "do nothing" or "fortify" when my military unit is on a city. The only option is to garrison. But I don't want to garrison. If my game were more involved, I might forget that I really wanted to move the garrisoned unit.

I can see no reason why a military unit on a city should not be allowed to do nothing. Please allow this option in a patch.

    - Military unit can be in a city without being garrisoned
    - Garrisoning increases city's defense/attack value
    - Garrisoning doesnt cost movement points nor does it end a units turn. It costs nothing
    - Barbarians cannot attack/enter cities, civilian units in cities are 100% safe from barbarians

Yes, I've noticed this as well. It may well be a little glitch.
I would just garrison the unit or fortify it 1 hex out of the city if it's bothering you that much.
Because this issue seems like a simple fix perhaps it will be included in the next hotfix or patch.

...Or you use the old fashioned commands that still works... While hte military unit is on the city just press F and it will fortify, dunno if the old (and i love them) worker commands from CIv III works aswell, haven't tested

That is one of my biggest issues about the game. The barbarians are boring even on 'raging barbarians'. It seems that in the new patch 1.0.0.62, at least the barb ships attack my ships now.

    Why wouldn't barbarians attack cities?
Yesterday my capital got under attack from 2 barbarian warriors and an archer (surprisingly coordinated, but I'm rather certain that was by chance, not planned)
Isn't there even an achievement that requires you to lose a city due to a barbarian raid?

You do realize that there is no difference between "garrison" and "fortify" right? If your unit was fortified in the city, it would be no different than it being garrisoned there.

Barbarians haven't ever attacked a city in those thousands of turns i have played, and I haven't seen anyone report such a thing happening.

The achievement is "Have any city ransomed by the barbarians", whatever that means. Likely answer in my mind is to have a city completely surrounded by barbs. Who knows.

I've had barbarians attack a city. It seems there have to be more than two of them in the area, and then they decide they are strong enough to attack. I've never seen them attack a city when they have less than three units available.
