Steam repeatedly downloading the whole game!

    Hello!

So I bought the boxed version of Civ5, installed it and had been playing it just fine.

However since this patch release I have been unable to play Civ5 for quite a long time now.

Steam has gone and started updating my Civ5. Now this 'patch' is over 4 gigabytes and I have no idea how you can call that a patch.
Anyways, I suffer through the ridiculously long download for this patch, which finishes.

I try to play civilization 5 tonight and it says its patching again.. ok no problems I think.

its now trying to download another patch the same size as before, OVER 4 GIGABYTES AGAIN!

It would appear to me that Steam has locked me into a patch cycle which has now used up all my monthly quota.

What's even more hilarious is that as soon as you start downloading the patch, you cant play the game.

So I've paid the full boxed price of this game and I can't even play it.

Please tell me how this makes sense. Please tell me how to fix this garbage without downloading another 4 gigabytes!

I am extremely frustrated and angry. This has got to be a joke.

I see there's other users having similar issues. Anyone have a solution to this madness?

ditto. exactly the same thing happening here. My dl limit is 3gig per month and then I pay through the teeth for anything over that.

I now cannot play my shiny boxed collectors edition of civ v.

I understand the need for copy protection and the like......But once again the only people suffering are the legit users who forked over a wad of hard earned. The only people not worrying about this ☺☺☺☺e right now are the pirates.

A response from the manufacturers would be nice as well. I am stuck here in limbo unable to play my beloved game and the silence from you guys is more painful than the actual problem

Let us know you hear us and are working on the problem at least.

Please disable steam updates for the game. Right click on the game.

    Then click on properties->updates.

If I had a data limit, I would uninstall the game and take it back to the retailer for a refund. Tell them that it does not work and you need a refund.

Sorry but steam and civ 5 are going to bandwidth hogs. There is simply no way around this problem.

How I would fix this is simply to delete steam off the pc, reinstall civ 5 from disc.

Then pray you can do the steam update. You can also call customer service for steam.

But once again, steam and civ 5 are bandwidth hogs, not a good fit for those that pay by the gigabite.

Um You need steam to be able to play Civ 5, reinstalling civ 5 will reinstall steam.

And there is no reason why they should be a bandwith hog. I don't play online, all I wan't to do is dl the latest patch which is under 50Mb. The game however because of some BS fault keeeps trying to dl the entire game again. If it worked properly it would hardly use any dl limit at all.

This would not be an issue of 2K released the Civilization 5 patch as a seperate download.

At least then we could download the patch and do the updates ourselves, so Civ5 is ready to go before Steam is even loaded.

And then if something goes wrong, we dont need to download the whole 4 gigabytes again...

Lastly, I really don't see why ANY patch should require a user to download the ENTIRE game!

So very angry: can somebody help, please?

Hi guys, I seem to be having the exact same problem as applor. I have spent around 8 hours trying to install Civilization 5 so far. Everytime I do it, steam tries to connect & update/install. It is incredibly slow. I did a four hour stint the other day. By the end of that marathon, I thought I had Civ installed: shortcut was on my desktop, in my start menu, etc. But when I inserted the disk and the "play" option comes up, I click it, nothing happens. Likewise, when I click on the shortcuts for Civ 5, nothing happens. However, I have an option that never popped up before: "reinstall". So I'm trying that now. Same rigmarole.

I have literally never had even a quarter of the difficulty installing a game IN MY LIFE as I am having with this. Does anyone know a way to fix this? Has anyone even been able to play the game at all so far?

As Snow Crash pointed out in this thread, you cannot install Civ 5 without it installing steam and running steam; this is more-or-less the first thing the game does.

I am extremely angry and frustrated. I'm a pretty busy guy, and I can't even use my hour a day to play Civ because the damn thing takes hours to install and then doesn't even work anyway.

Here's to hoping somebody can help us out,

    Yours exceedingly frustrated and angry,

    Bryan
