    LAN with same disk?

My husband and I used to play CIV 4 with the same disk on different computers via LAN and assumed we'd be able to with CIV 5 too. However, we're struggling to work out how. If we log in with the same Steam account, one of us gets kicked out, and now he's created his own one it doesn't recognise the game as being installed.

Is there something we're doing wrong?

What you're trying to do is not allowed. You need two copies of the game to play on two computers simultaneously. The same rule actually existed in Civ 4 as well, even if the game didn't enforce it.

    bummer...
Well, hot seat aint that cool as multiplayer, and having two brothers have to pay 2 games in order to be able to play on 2 pcs in same house (even maybe in same room) is wrong imho. What if they could prove they are related-living in one household?

Yeah, We bought two copies on release, but after we opened the one being new to Steam i read where you could install it on multi-computers anywhere. I assumed that ment we could lan without having to open the second box. Sadly we assumed wrong. There is a way around it, but its a real hassle. So we just opened the other one and blew the 100 bucks on a single household to play lan.

We actually had 4 copies, since everyone in the house plays wife, kids, friends who come over to visit, and myself but we returned the other two unopened until we know for sure we will see some animations in the game otherwise it does not hold the attention of the kids or wife as much, and i occasionally play single player but not to often. I rather do something togather with them.

Wait, wait, wait, we've played with just ONE copy, and via instructions from a Rep on this very forum.

Just log into Steam in the offline mode via every computer but one, and host from that one.

We've played Lan since it came out that way, well, that is until the last patch, which seems to have messed it all up. . .

That's the reason there wont be a Hotseat. THEY WANT YOU TWO BUY 2 COPIES!

There will be hotseat. Firaxis said so. They are just busy with bug/gameplay fixes before rolling out hotseat.

This news is really disappointing. I bought this game tonigh to play on our home LAN with my 12 year old son. No where on the outside of the disk does it say that you need two copies of the game to play on a LAN. I would not have purchased it if it had. I am very unhappy and will most likely be uninstalling and getting rid of this game. Very, very disappointing and very misleading.

I also tried to setup a LAN because hot-seat is inexistent. I understand you do not want people to copy your game, but at the same time buying a buggy game twice is beyond absurd.

Anyway, like I said in another thread, why no simply patch the simple bugs and issues we have, and then work on the "big" multiplayer issues?

If your just an honest person/customer, who just wants to play a Lan game with your family, too bad. They made it so you have to buy multiple copies. Purposely. And if they had implemented hotseat, they would have missed out on that little extra "milking" of you buying more copies.

    Civ 5

We have been playing together since Civ2, and have never had to buy two copies to play in the same household. I understand they don't want people pirating the game, but if we bought the board game, we wouldn't have to buy two copies. The Civ4 requirement to have the disk in the computer when starting up seems like a reasonable way to make sure that the game doesn't travel too far. Granted, there are ways around that, but there are ways around every restriction if you look hard enough. I prefer to support the developers, but...

This DRM has gone beyond reasonable restrictions into the completely ridiculous. If we can do an offline share I will be happy, otherwise I might just go return the game and keep playing Civ4.

Well According to 2K Greg I must be a software pirate because I've been playing Lan/Direct IP mp without buying a second copy of Civ 4.
It turns out I've wasted $50 on this game, I don't buy Civ games to play by myself versus a pathetic AI (and it really is, even with the patch); I buy it to play versus and co-operatively with my wife (one copy of the game required since Civ 2 - hot seat at minimum). I guess I should have known that the game wouldn't support MP in any real way and would screw me out of $100 if I wanted to play it with my wife. After all if a game company can figure out how to F*** you out of more money they will do it.
It looks like I will need to go find a new series to play and stop supporting Sid Meier.

2K and Firaxis are not to blame that you have been illegally using the same copy of Civ on different computers at the same time. I guess you never read your EULA. Here's a helpful hint: If you buy one copy of Windows 7, you are only legally allowed to have it on one computer. Same goes for most software licenses, such as your antivirus, your Microsoft Office bundle, and your Photoshop.

Now that you have learned and accepted that you are a lawbreaker, feel free to find loopholes and exploits to get around these pesky laws like everyone else does.

If 2k was smart they would sell a multiple-license version of the game for $20 more or a family bundle. But then multiplayer would need to be functionally the same as single player.

Epic win. It's funny how many people fail to realize they're actually pirating.

A bit of a logical fallacy to assert that something is wrong just because it is 'illegal'.

Your right on so many levels. Releasing a broken and unfinished product at full price is certainly not the most ethical thing to do.

Reminds me of a sarcastic quote of Voltaire: "All murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets."

The same could be said about scammers. Steal your neighbour's TV and you'll go to jail, but steal 1$ from half a million costumers and nothing will happen.

My son made me a present: Civ V - COLLECTOR'S EDITION to play with me (i.e. to play together on a single PC, as we made with CIV IV). Bad surprise: it's not possible to play on the same PC!!! That's incredible!!! Reading this posts, I'm understanding I'd buy a second box to play on different pc!!! Very bad impression, dear Sid, so I'm thinking to sell this useless collector's box...
