    Irish Accent

    Hey guys,

I have been really looking forward to Bioshock now for a long time! Ive played both System shocks religiously and always check up on Cultofrapture site. I recently watched a teaser movie of Bioshock and heard The Worst Irish accent I have ever heard. It has really put me off the game now I must admit.

Its the type of Irish accent you see on American Tv and you know that every Irish person watching across the world is cringing. Im Irish myself, like actually Irish, Ive lived in Ireland my whole life and must say It very much takes from the game. I presume the game is meant to be very atmospheric, like its spiritual successors, but such an accent will ruin it. Is it really going to be in the final version?

    Hi and welcome
Its really funny you should bring up the subject of Atlas's voice,as I've been pondering on the identity of the actor playing him for some time now.personally,I like the accent as it has some character, although as you say its not particuarly convincing as an irish one.I think in fact, one member thought it sounded australian!

Of course, it would all depend on how long he has been out of the country. If he left Ireland when he was young, much would be explained.

It's been a while since I watched Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when I heard the voice of Atlas I immediately thought of Colm Meaney.

You mean Paul McGillon? Hate to break it to you, but he's actually Scottish.

i was talking in terms of accents changing while in a different culture, he may not sound quite Irish because he hasn't been back in a while

Voicing in games is almost always awful. I guess it's the nature of the beast.

Sometimes they get it right, but I guess sometimes they don't.

Really inappropriate use of terminology is also a problem. A character using a word or term that you know they'd just never use in a million years.

It does seem to be a very stereotypical Irish accent. I bet when you finally meet him he will have a pig under his arm.

    LOL

The worst is when they speak in a mish-mash of Scottish and Irish accents, or when they say something like "yes I'm a Scot, descended from the Scottish...top of the morning to ya"

Did anyone notice how Yoda sounds in the starwars games— like a leprechaun? I keep expecting him to say something like "Kiss me you will. Irish I am".

I thought that too. And I'm pretty good with voices.

That accent is fine with me, his predecessors goggles and PNPman never talked much anyway, just run around bashing SHODAN's minions.

But I would like to see the character do Lord Of The Dance with a pig under his arm........

Im not so much saying that its bad Irish accent, there are places in Ireland where people do speak just like that. Im more worried about how it affects the game. In SS2 you had SHODAN talking to you and it was really scary, her voice like. To have an Irish man talking to you will just ruin it, there will probably be no atmosphere at all for me. Halo 3 just leaped ahead as far as Im concerned...

Have you heard Andrew Ryan talk yet? He sounds like one nasty bastard. Atlas (the Irish guy) isn't even an antagonist. He tries to help you, although working towards his own ends while doing so. And Halo 3? Nothing kills atmosphere like Master Chief's idiotic and horrendously stereotypical "videogame badass" lines and acting.

Riddick's attitude in Butcher Bay gets really bad if you play the whole thing in just a few (long) sittings. It gets to a point where you kind of think 'are you like this all the time? With everyone?' I always thought he'd make alliances rather than be a totally isolated corny-line-dispensing a-typical badass all the time.
