I cant say i ever used PBEM, but i cant say i understand why it was taken out either.

Like hotseat, animations in muli-play,the ability to save games normally, two civs being considered mods and can not mp with them, and the other problems any form of multiplayer have. I sometimes wonder if multiplayer was an after thought and chucked in a few weeks prior release.

Good luck on getting this feature back, I feel any feature that gets steamlined away is bad.

If Firaxis is limited on resources/time, I'd prefer to see them concentrate on Pitboss rather than PBEM, Pitboss is over all a much better way to play a "slow" game of civ.

Pitboss requires a person to have at least 1 computer always running as a server, I play PBEM because me, my best friend, and brother liev in serparate continents and this is the best way for us to play, without setting up a host server, and still enjoy the game words with friends style, by playing 30 minutes here and there when we have time during out busy schedule.

Yes it does require one player to have an always on computer to host the pitboss app, but it prevents players from reload cheating to get the combat results they want, which was a rampant problem in Civ3 and Civ4 PBEM.

Not to mention that the pitboss allows any player to login any time to play there turn, you are not waiting for the emailed save that the last player has forgot about, and if one player is busy the turn still progresses even if he misses an occasional turn.

Yea if you play with people you don't trust... If my best friend and my brother want to cheat (which I hiighly doubt) I tell them go ahead. Also most people asking for this feature are people who play with people they know, i.e. friends and family which (at least in my case) have people who do not cheat.

Absolutely, yes. I also have friends/family on another continent and different timezone, so PBEM has been our preferred way of play. It makes me very sad to think that it wouldn't be implemented.

I have been playing many pitboss and pbem games in civ IV. Both have problems. One of the big pitboss problems is double turns. If you are in a war and you are the last person to play before turn change and the first to play after turn change, you get a double move, which is really unfair and most of the times requires a reload.

Yes, in PBEM you can play the same turn over and over untill you have the result you want, but everyone can do that, and it doesnt necesarily destroy the game.

So I like PBEM most because it gives the most fair game I feel.

Most Pitboss games have rules agains double moves when at war, it's not hard to manage and in my experience it is far less of a problem to deal with than reload cheating in PBEM.

For me simply not having to wait for emails to play your next turn makes Pitboss far superior.

PBEM should have died about the same time dial up did. Seriously, this is not worth even 1 minute of the developers time. Sure maybe if the game was perfect and had no other issues they could spend time coding this, but they have far too much else to work on then something like play by email that will probably be used by less than 1% of all Civ players

In case you didn't notice, the 53.47% of people in that poll turns out to be 16 people....now take that compared to the thousands of people playing civ. Now lets assume that the 16 people that said yes was even quadrupled, to assume there are people that would use it that didnt vote. even with that quadrupled number your not even at half a percent of the total Civ users.

    Pbem

One of the main reasons I purchased this game was to PBEM. I have family and friends (up to 8 right now) who are waiting on the PBEM to be patched in. We have gone back to Civ IV to keep playing. I am bummed out that it has taken this long to get it going, so much so that I have stopped recommending this game to my friends less then a week after it came out.

I personally, and at least 2 friends, will not be buying Civ V until Hotseat (at the very least, if not PBEM) is added in. If it never gets added, Firaxis and 2K will never get our money. It's pretty much that simple.

Every Civ player I know IRL plays PBEM, because it's the most efficent MP option after Hotseat.

Assuming one of the group is willing to leave their PC on to act as a server.

As does the option to not use a random seed on reload - this means every time you load the save, the same results apply. So all you can change is your choices.

But at the same time, the number of people in the poll who DON'T want PBEM is even lower - the whole point of a percentage, is that it's independant of sample size... but by your argument, the number of people who don't want it is pathetic so to realise it without those options is franly madness as only 15 people would be happy for it to be left out.

I bought the game without realising that there was no PBEM. What a waste of money that was. I know several others that have similarly wasted their money in the same way. I'm still playing Civ iv as it has the functionality that is needed. The game is otherwise good, but there should have been a warning that the game was being released incomplete. Oh, but that would have meant a lot less sales. Multiplayer functionality for a game of this calibre is a necessity, not an option. To me, this is a high priority and should be easily converted from the previous itterations.
