Entering new eras
What does it do? Is there any bonus if you enter new era as the first civ?
-
The most obvious one is that more social policies are unlocked as you advance to a new era. They can make a huge difference.
City state benefits also increase with each era.
I don't think there's a bonus for the first player to reach an era but you will get above benefits for more turns.

No bonus for being the first civ, but you benefit more from allied city-states(culture, food, units) and unlock more advanced cultural policy trees.
Also the music and graphics change(the graphics of your cities and base units).

Do your unit upkeep costs change at era transition? I've had a few times where i got suspicious...
Also city defense scores/attack power increases. i.e. the most tech pushing civ has the best defense.
Also city state defense increases with highest tech leader. i.e. if you are worried about a city state getting overthrown by an angry London or Rome just tech up and their def/attack powers will increase to absorb the early push from AI.
