Help a noob- why so many turns?!

Hey guys, I'm a total Civ noob and I'm still learning the ropes. I recently defeated Stockholm (city state) and annexed the city. I did everything I could do to increase happiness (including building the courthouse) but EVERYTHING takes a ridiculously long time to produce. For example, it takes nearly 100 turns to build something simple, where any other city the same product takes about 10 turns. Why is this???

    Thanks for reading.

You need to build a courthouse first, then you can build other things at the normal rate. The city doesn't like you because you just conquered them.

Like I said, I did build a courthouse and everything still takes a billion turns to produce. Anyone else?

Because the city doesn't have much production.

1.) Buy buildings that increase production
2.) Use specialists to increase build speed
3.) Work tiles/build improvements that increase production.

Bingo, you cant surround your cities with farms and trading posts and expect them to produce things quickly.

On the other hand, almost everything besides courthouses can be purchased so trading posts aren't necessarily a bad idea.
