Why would you want to? Just tell them to sleep if you don't want to give them orders. Again why would you want to?
Because auto-select moves you half way across the world - often to your detriment. You are looking at something, thinking about what to do, and BOOM your camera moves to a unit that hit an obstacle.
They should make it a button to press to zoom to the unit instead of just automatically do it for you.
Every time I get in a battle it starts jumping across the map away from where the battle is,
And Id rather not put them asleep because it would be nice to be able to put say a worker to work and then go fight my battle without it jumping away all the time.
I see how this would be detrimental in multiplayer as all turns are happening simultaneously, is that what you're referring to? In single player it's not an issue
Annoys the hell out of me in singleplayer. I want to be able to hop to areas of the screen, deal with what's happening in that area, then deal with other things. Instead every time I give any unit orders and just start moving the mouse over the next unit to move, suddenly my screen's flinging me back to a worker that's finished his job at my cities. It's really irritating.
Has anyone at least figured out what the logic behind the newly selected unit is? It's almost like they went out of their way to find the most irritating auto selection order
It's an issue in SP too. Let's say I have 6 units fighting a war and 3 other units (workers/etc) to command. If I want to focus on all 6 war units first, it's pretty much impossible without a great deal of irritation. I order one war unit, go to click the second one, except my screen flies off to my worker, I scroll back, order unit 2, but yup, there goes my screen again. I've gotten to the point I immediately click to grab the screen when it wants to scroll for the next unit, just to try and avoid it, but it'll still scroll a little and be insanely annoying.
It can get even worse if you give a unit a waypoint, and then change your mind on the waypoint and try to change it, only to have the game auto select the next unit at the same time, congrats, you've just told your worker to run to the front line. Now you lose a worker turn, have to find it and cancel that order, and you still haven't fixed the waypoint of that original unit.
This is not game breaking, but it's an incredibly frustrating implementation either way. Let me manually cycle through the units, the game won't end turn while units need orders anyway.
TOTALLY AGREE. This drives me nuts, especially in MP but also in SP. It also seems to happen if you move a scout (or any unit with more than 1 movement to spend) only 1 tile (instead of 2), the screen jumps even though that scout still has 1 movement point left. Drives me freakin' nuts jumping all over the map like that, and has resulted in moving the wrong unit to the wrong places on more than 1 occasion.

I would be happy if it would at least pick a new unit in the same general vicinity as the previous one. Also agree that the jumping all over the map is very irritating.
Also irritating is when it auto selects a worker and I then click on a city to see if there are any tiles I need to be working with that worker. When I exit the city screen it auto selects to a DIFFERENT unit and I have to manually scroll back and find the original worker. Sometimes clicking the left arrow takes me back to the original worker, but not always.
It is an issue. It is freaking annoying...even in single player.
I'm fighting a battle, and the camera whisks me away to worry about some worker, or some trireme halfway across the world. The camera taking over should only happen if you press the "unit needs order button" after you think you've moved all your units,
there is such a simple fix for this there's no excuse for not doing it as it is freaking annoying as all hell
I too would like to see this removed. In the end game, I have tested this on 6 different games, and each time this is what appears to be locking up my machine. The computer seems to get lost looking for the unit, and thus quits responding. I would like to see them go back to the option for me to rotate through the units, not an auto action.
Agreed. It is massively irritating.
At the least, it should make a point to select a unit nearest to you.
What I would like is a 'next unit' button, so I can choose when I want the auto select to move on.
I would also like this fixed!
A hint to anyone who wants to be helpful to players asking how to change the way something works:
There is no good reason, ever, to reply by asking "Why would you want to?" Take the guy at face value, assume he has a good reason, and help if you can.
It's not just rude, it forces the OP to explain something not actually relevant to his question. And at the end of that explanation/ensuing discussion. he's still going to ask "So... how do I do it?"
Perhaps the auto-select criteria could be changed on a global as well as a local/screen level scale.
For example... have all civilian units (workers, settles, great people) slated to move last. If you're using a great general in the middle of a battle, you'll manually move him first in all likelihood before auto-select gets around to him.
Also, have auto select prioritize units based on the screen focus when the turn was advanced.
Thoughts?
ah, nevermind, didn't realise was a necro thread.
I just post here to mark that this also pisses me off quiet often and alot.
[woops sorry. Necromancy continued, but the solution is not obvious. It will be better to be able to turn it off directly from the game]
