Smile Windows cannot access the specified device path or file

    Win XP Pro SP2
    Intel Core 2 6600
    2 Gigabytes of DDR2 800
Xpert NVidia 8600 GTS 256Mb (163.44 Forceware Drivers)
    Soundblaster Audigy SE 7.1
    DX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
    UK Retail version

After running flawlessly for three days (I have just reached Port Neptune), when I try to start the game from the Start Menu a windows box pops up and says "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

On running autoplay from the CD, when I click "Play" nothing happens - and no windows box.

I don't have any background programs running and all unnecessary processes (including AVG and ZoneAlarm) are terminated.

The game was installed under the Administrators Account.

On checking BioShock.exe I noticed that the mouse pointer changed to an hourglass. The exe seemed to be in use or locked.

I then ran AVG and of course, like many others, found that AVG found the exe to contain a virus.

As per the advice in the forums, I have ignored this as a false positive.

My gut feeling is that this is a problem with the anti-piracy program. I have encountered similar problems in the past with games that have used simlar programs.

However, I'll keep an open mind.

    Any ideas anyone?

I guess it's uninstall and reinstall time?

There are 3 threads on this problem already, you need to uninstall AVG, reboot then reinstall Bioshock. If you want an AV programme then get yourself AVAST free as that is working with Bioshock.

you can just disable AVG while play by right double clicking on resident shield when you open up AVG (untick turn off....) and then you can play.

im hoping grisoft will fix this soon with a quick update
