    XP earned via combat : not dependant on damage dealt, fail

    It seems the easiest way to farm xp is to simply do as little damage as possible.

    That way enemy units and cities survive longer and will give you more xp.

    Infact i am keeping civs alive by sitting units next to their cities. The city bombards them every turn(free xp) and ranged units can attack the city every turn(free xp).

    Upgrading units to do more damage seems a bad idea unless i want to win as fast as possible.

    Sure, that's pretty much same thing i did too - kept my military busy for the whole game, even when i actually didn't need to conquer anything...
