Civilization V always crashes when loading a saved game from within a game

If I load a game from the Main Menu, then it loads fine. If I load any saved game while I'm already in a game, though, then Civilization V crashes. How can I fix this?

I had the same problem - it seems to be related to the issue of unbounded growing of the save game sizes (from ~400kb to about ~30mb for me).

However if you delete all your save games after winning a game and restart civ before starting the next game, the size will reset to about 300kb and saves will load fine.
To be more accurate: I noticed that this increase in size seems to be related to the amount of save game loads you did before saving the game and the size of the largest save game file in your saves directory at the time you loaded the game.

My saved games are all 1.4 MB or less, so that doesn't seem to be the cause of the problem for me.

I would advise at the moment do not load save games while playing quit back to the main menu and then load.

There is a late turn crash issue that is being looked into at the moment.

2KGreg will be releasing more information on the next patch in this link.

Tried that, didn't work - quitting to main menu, and loading a game produced a similar crash.

This crash behavior recently started happening to me too. I suspect it might have something to do with the number of saves (and/or save sizes) you have, because up to this point, I've always deleted the old saves before starting a new game - now I had quite a few more saves remaining than usual.

I'll delete all the saves and start a new game, and hopefully that'll get rid of this issue... for now at least. I do hope this'll get looked into for the next patch though.

Are you getting a runtime error message when you try to load these saved games?

I tried clearing out all of my saves, deleting all the files in user/documents/my games/civ 5, uninstalling/reinstalling the game, and loading unmodded SP games. Every attempt to load a saved game results in a runtime crash for me. It sounds like you're having the same problem as 90% of Civ 5 players as of the .162 patch, myself included.

Hopefully the coming patch will fix this because it's pretty much made the entire game worthless, considering you can't finish a game unless you've got the 17H of uninterrupted time to play a full game without saving.

I've had the same problem for the past six weeks since the game's release. Neither the hotfix or the patch fixed the problem.

Over the five games that I've started and tried playing, the saves became unloadable from within the game after about 50 turns on average.

The furthest I've gotten before giving up is the medieval era, and that was only because I was quitting the game to the desktop, restarting it, and then loading my saves.

My notebook's specs are well above the recommended specs for the game, and I'm running the game on 64-bit Windows 7. All my drivers are up to date (my Nvidia drivers are only a week old with performance fixes specifically for this game). I've only tried playing on standard sized maps and not the huge ones that seemed to be causing many problems for many others.

I can avoid the crash if I only load a save once each time I start the game. If I want to load another save, I have to quit to the desktop, start the game again and load the save from the main menu.

My crashing save games aren't huge (biggest is just over 1.4 Mb), but they are triple the size of the saves that don't crash.

I think that this is getting addressed in the next patch because the patch notes mention something about a new save system to counter save game corruption, but I don't think that will fix the saves that are crashing for you now.

Exactly the same here. The game is only playable in DX9 mode without loads or i have to restart the game to load the saves. In DX10/11 in addition i have other random crashes. Just tired of it, i wanna play the game which i paid for

    I think I have a solution:

Disable the intro movie. I had a similar issue with marathon games, disabling the intro movie fixed it for me.

    Saved Games Crash

I am running Civ V on a Mac. Most games could not be relaunched after saving if they went beyond about 200 turns. No help from Aspyr, they could reproduce the problem, but had no ideas about how to correct it.

This resolved the issue: Exit Steam, go to Users/Library/Application Support/Steam. Delete all files except Steam Apps. Restart computer, relaunch Steam. I realize that the path and location will not be the same for PC, but I suspect that this will work. I also find that the game runs better with NO autosaves. I periodically save the game, but occasionally revisit the load screen to delete anything except the most recent version of the game. Before starting a new game I delete EVERYTHING. For some reason there is still a single file in autosaves.

Walker - Your issue, is COMPLETELY different from the one referenced in this thread, not to mention, this thread is 18 months old
It is a good tip (for mac users) and opening a new thread, or posting on Aspyr, where users with macs will need help, will work best !!

I'm sorry, but it's the same issue and appears to be related to the game and not the computer or the porting. If it's an old thread and no one is interested why do you care?

  15. #15
I care, because people spouting misinformation, is damaging to the forum as a whole.

This thread, is about an error, ONLY caused by Direct X, which is NOT PRESENT on the MAC platform.

Hey all, first post. I have the same issue and really want to get this solved, so im going to post my specs and then change a bunch of things to see what works. Hopefully i can find a solution, since this thread is the second google search result for "civ v crashes when loading".

    Specs:
    Windows XP (Updated)
    Dual core 2.4ghz
    2gb RAM
    Nvidia Geforce 210 (Updated)
    DirextX 9.0c (Updated)
    Visual C++ (Updated)

    Civ version: 1.0.0.17
    Auto save: every 2 turns
    Total auto saves: 10

    Problem:
Civ V crashes when i try and load a saved game.

    Troubleshooting:
    Intro movie set to SKIP
    Deleted saved games

    Adgenda:
    Patch Civ V
Lower quality settings (I like eagle-view anyway)
Not sure what else to try
    Keep googling and checking forums

Hopefully we can solve this. When i started playing there was no problem and now its doing it without fail.

Unfortunately, if you check the game requirements and GPU benchmarks, I think your Geforce 210 is a bit underpowered for the game. You may be lucky in that it may work when you start up a new game and may build up a small map slowly but when you load a saved game it can't handle the full load.

In addition to what Oblio said, this thread may not have any relevance at all, as it is in responce to an issue where CLICKING THE LOAD BUTTON, causes a crash, as opposed to a crash while the game is loading.

The 210, however, is almost certainly the cause of your issue, if youd like more help, please open a new thread, with your DXDIAG posted, and a full description of your issue.

I updated the game with the newest patch and the loading crashes have stopped so far. Though with the new update my empire is in chaos. Sorry for intruding in the thread, i just hate to see posts with my problem go unanswered. I didnt expect to have a negative reaction for trying to help. This will also be my last post, so dont worry about it.

To everyone else: try updating your Civ to see if it will fix the issues.

Hold on, how was your Civ not updated, and how did you go about updating it?

The above solution is NOT a solution for anyone else.

I believe I have the same issue. I have saved games and when I try to load them the Civ5 crashes. This is a very recent problem, until yesterday it was working perfectly. I have finished the game, in huge maps, with Oda Obunaga and Montezuma, games that have lasted for 2 or 3 weaks each, and have always loaded without problem the respective saves. There was an update in the Civ5 yesterday morning I believe, and I have started the game with Bismark just after. I played until late, and this morning when I tryed to load the last saved game the problem has begun. I have tried almost everything I read in this thread (restarted the PC 3 or 4 times to force steam to restart, deleted all others saved games, restarted the game using direct x 9, etc) and the problem persists. The only thing I didnt tried was starting the game without the intro movie, since I have no idea of how to do this. I have a good PC (HP Pavilion, 130G of disk, 40G of free space, 4G DDR2 of Ram memory, ATI radeon with 1G dedicated) with windows 7 64 installed, which I only use for games by the way, so it cant be any hardware issue. Thank you all very much for any help.

Just an update, I find out how to skip the intro movie but the problem persists. I restarted the PC after desabling the intro movie just to make sure steam restarted, and still nothing.

    Hey.
    I have this issue too.
Got back to playing Civ 5 after a break of 2-3 weeks and found it had a update, i was excited and started with a game. Bismarch-Earth-16States-Pace Standard-Opponents 8-Diff Prince-All victory types except Time and Diplomatic etc etc.
Had a great starting pos and was on top when i saved for the day. Like one of my top 5 games. Imagine my frustration when i tried to reload today and had a crash... Found this thread and tried all the mentioned solutions except that 1 for mac cause i cant find it on my system. (XP Home edition)(also my graphic card handles the game very well and im on DX9)
Now after countless reboots for both steam and computer, deletes of files, verifies of integrity and more, i still cant load my game.
What the fudge..? I had no problems before the update.
I am very dissapointed! Anyone know what to do to fix this?

Can you post the full path to your civ5 folder?

    IE c:/user/mydocs etc

    Ägaren

That Umlaut is your culprit - Right click your My Documents folder, select properties, then click location, and move it to a new location, with no Umlauts, or other non american english symbols
