There is no possible way to get it started, either as DivX9 or 10/11. I have tried to follow this advice
below to no effect at all :-(

    >If you are running Windows 7, the users files for the game may not have been created due to a conflict with My Documents.
    >Rename it to simply Documents and then try launching the game again.

    Any suggestions?

Personally have never seen that with this game before now, so it might be a good idea to reinstall Steam.

You can back-up the game data by moving the 'steamapps' folder, but it may be a good idea to reinstall Civ 5 after installing Steam.

Hope this helps, let me know

    What I tried

I just reinstalled steam from scratch, same problem according to the event log.

And no, I did not try any cracks, the game came directly from a DVD I bougth at Amazon UK.

Civ IV run fine on the same machine + a ton of other games no problem.

    All in all

I am better off playing Patrician or Victoria 2 (when it is patched). A fix for this particular problem is long in coming I gather.

    fix for me

@peju: Do you have per chance ThreatFire on your system? After uninstalling it (deactivating or killing the process is not enough) Civ finally (after hours of looking) started on my machine.

    Good luck!

Threatfire, and in fact, all PCTOOLS programs are causing it, and apparantly, STILL causing it
