Thread: [CIV 5 ISSUES] The complete list

I agree with the general gist of these comments and hopefully Firaxis will do something about most of it.

As others have pointed out, one of the significant omissions from the list is the poor battle AI. The reason why I am not playing Civ V right now is probably because it provides absolutely no challenge on the battlefield. I think I'll have to return to Advance Wars for that...

Everybody can see this. The problem is that - unlike lots of the points you mention - it is not easy to fix.

Looks like the game simply loads in the background so even if you disable the intro video you are still stuck. I can interrupt civ usally after round about 10s.

can not even install the game....

Game installation halts at trying to connect to Steam website. Tried turning of firewall, setting new permissions, tried a tcp setting. Nothing works to get the thing going. Suggestions welcome, think it is a big issue.

Wow!! Lots of good stuff here. A great thread to be sure. Thanks for making it! I hope the devs will address each issue.

Do you have Steam already installed? If not, download it from here first

    http://store.steampowered.com/about/

Once you've connected to Steam, try installing the game.

Incidentally I think the moderators should sticky this post.

nice list. Just know the demo so far, but many issues mentioned seem just sensible and very fixable as well.

I do not know if these things just happen in the demo, but if not:
    - the symbols in workable tiles are very small and not as as easily recognizable as in civ4

-when i planned route into a distant fog of war hex (discovered but dark), the computer obviously knew that there was someone standing there and refused my order

    - a garrisoned unit in strategic view often would not be selectable. I had to go to the normal view or select him from the list.

    - in the big city list clicking on the city does not open the city screen (in the small one it does)

-maybe just my taste but: after renaming my capital, new cities will for example always be called Athens. If I rename Athens, I would like it to skip that name. also: after renaming the city, in strategical view the city would keep still be called as before. I had three Athens even though none of them was called Athens

-most of all: I want to give order after a unit moved. It did not work in the demo at least. I cannot say "heal", or tell a worker which arrived to begin a farm in the next turn. I can just say "go to" but even that does not seem to be intended. Especially for workers I want the queues back as well. it helps a lot to tell one worker to do first A then B then C instead of having all your plans in mind all the time.

That's because the intro movie is a loading screen. That's also why you can't skip it until a certain point because there is no place to 'skip' to yet.

It has become second nature for people to try to edit ini files to remove intro movies, but in this case the performance gain is negligible.

Great thread I would love to see most of this if not all in Civ 5 but we cant expect a miracle unless we mod it and do it ourself which proly devs expect us to do.

Major issue with the IA : it does not use its gold

At war with them, even with 10 000 gold plus Big Ben wonder, the IA is not buying any defense : http://i.imgur.com/Iy7mK.jpg

Hey guys, good thread and I hope they pay attention to at least some of the issues.

There's a major bug that has been missed off, as anyone who has multiple monitors will attest.

If you have a second screen to the right of your primary monitor, you cannot scroll to the right. The mouse just goes onto the other screen. If you're fortunate enough to have 3 monitors, you wont be able to scroll in either direction.

This drives me insane. Please constrain the mouse cursor to the primary monitor.

Another UI issue - when selecting a leader/civ in a multiplayer lobby, it does not show you their perks/unique units. This information is not on the handy tech tree / info sheet that came in the box either.

As I play mostly multiplayer, it's pretty much guesswork.

Hey guys, about the useless workers with nothing to do at the moument: what if workers ZZZ in a city gave 1 or 2 hammers to that city? Anybody know if that can be modded in?

I prefer the way it is. Arrow keys scroll fine. So an option to restrict would be fine but changing outright is a no go.

Agreed with just about all of that list. I swear they must have been hard up on cash or something or hallucinating on some new form of mushrooms to release the game the way it currently is. Not everything in this world Has to meet a deadline pushing deadlines back works out better In the long run once and awhile.

    Deluxe Edition issues:

Soundtrack is missing Egypt peace time music. Doesn't have either of Babylon's music tracks.

    Can't play Babylon in multiplayer.

    Visuals:

Trading posts look bad visually when built in mass around a city. IMO Cottages looked better. Strange that Trading Post in later eras do look like modern Cottages.

No railroad bridge. Just the same ancient stone bridge.

Advisors don't look modern in later eras.

    Extra features:

Would be nice if Hall of Fame gave more points or considered games on higher difficulty or against larger numbers of opponents higher in the rankings.

Would be nice to have Hall of Fame added to Steam profile alongside our achievements.

    * Add a real time clock option.

Shift-Tab will bring up the Steam overlay which has the clock.

*missing a pop up when entering a new era to remind us that new social policies are available.

They're not really "available" until you can adopt a policy so I don't see much point to a pop-up.

*Unit Info Panel: HP bar is easy to miss, Promotions are small, aren't unique and require tooltips to see. No XP bar, Range not listed, too large and nonadjustable size.

Promotions don't have unique icons? Which ones? The XP bar is the long blue bar in the middle, IIRC.

    Good post.

I haven't seen mention of this:

    - No option to order saved games by date. Only alphabetically.

After a while, it becomes difficult to retrieve a specific save when the list is so long. No quick load option on the menu exacerbates this issue...

All of these fixes are great and all but really the only things they should be looking at fixing first is:

    - combat AI, protect ranged, build navies, build air units. Use combined armes to SOME degree at least....

    - Diplo AI, AI here is so poorly implemented. I can understand that the AI is playing to win now instead of being a historical figure but seriously it needs work.

All the UI fixes and little annoying thing can wait imo if they would only make the AI make rational decisions in combat...

The legal mumbo jumbo stuff at the beginning of every launch that I have to click “Continue” to before accessing the main menu. Signing it once should be enough.

My Semi-Official List of Suggestions/Complaints and the occasional but rare praise

    1) Satellites do not reveal the map.... nor does any other tech.
I can launch a ship to centauri prime but don't know how many continents areon my planet?
I can't goggle earth my planet when I have computers and satellites? Come on now...

    2) Workers who build improvements in enemy territory during war

    3) Unrealistic amount of barbs in the modern and future era.

    4) Unrealistic Diplomacy (see below for a full contemplation)

    5) AI that stands no chance on a battlefield. I have yet to see one choke get bypassed. (On any difficulty)
I mean seriously. You knew it was going to be one hext/ tile.
You should of know players were gonna use chokes as a main means of defensive when we are outnumber by AI units (When playing above prince) and yet they just feed us massive amount of ep till we can move out and crush them-- it's so simple, it's sickening.

*PRAISE* I do like how the AI respondes to you if you put troops on there border (bout time)

    6) Unplayable MP. Can't save, Can't load, constant disconnects. Maybe this is steam's fault--I've complained about their system many times before along with 100s of others but I know that it isn't gonna change, but as much as steam is to blame for the lack of a decent MP experience, you are ultimately responsible since YOU choose to use steam. The player
does not nor did we ever have a choice.

    7) Either Conquest is too easy or the other ones are too hard. I'll leave that up for debate but I've never lost a MP game (The few I've managed to be able to finish) to anything other then conquest. It's too easy to spot someone going for the culture win, scores are displayed and when it says Stonehenge created in a far off land but player A's score wewnt over 70+ points it's obvious who built it. Science takes too long, gotta build the Apollo program + all the parts + get them to your capitol. I almost did it once by using great engs-but you can't do enough before you get wiped out. Good luck trying to do that while your opponents bomb you to oblivion. Diplomacy is iffy, it's a real hit and miss. Sometimes the AI does EXACTLY what it needs to. Attacks the right player at the right time (Sure it can't field an army for crap but E for Effort I always say) Least it provides a distraction/mild entertainment.

    8) Memory leaks mostly during the auto saves, but they continue to grow and bog down the system.

    9) Graphic cards are over heating on MANY computers (Just look at the Civ tech support threads). Hopefully when new drivers are released that will solve most problems and although Hardware is the responsibility of the users (That's us) it would be nice and PROFESSIONAL for them to temp hot patch a GPU throttle back until those said drivers are available.
The average user has no idea what temp control monitoring software is.

    10) Maintaining large empires is WAY to hard above the prince level. I mean it's EXTREMELY hard, esp in MP. You can not afford to keep units garrisoned in cities, maintain borders against aggressive AI players, and hold onto critical chokes. The AI might be stupid enough to roll into your chokes over and over but players arn't, and since large armies are damn near impossible to hold onto for any realistic amount of time it's not good game design. Alot of my MP wins are me watching aggressive players grow and sniping their rear cities from the seas since they can't afford to leave defensives at home and have to field their entire military on the warfront.

    11) When no more practical tiles are available I should be able to "culture push" my opponents borders like in Civ 4. Culture bombs arn't the answer, we need CONSTANT culture pressure to add a much needed level of gameplay in terms of city management.

    12) Tanks in 1300s? Really? Ancient ruins need to be capped per unit so if a unit has already been upgraded it stops after it's 1st one.

    13) City states with Mech infantry on a continent where no one has above musket men?

    14) Too many steps to start the game. Recomended shortcuts don't work. Should have a quick launch option/feature. Fix the intro bug/resource issue.

    15) TBS... Let me ask you, what is a TBS? So how come Civ in MP isn't? Why is TBS only a single player feature? Sure I was pissed like most people when 2K FAILED to annouce that hotseat wasn't going to be there at launch till after over 100 posts were made inquiring about it. They waited till 72 hours till the release of the game to show the manuel when people leanred that it wasn't included.
Needless to say they should of been upfront with us and told us about the cut feature when they said they were removing the religion feature. Comming clean is the best thing you can do as a game developer. Period. But besides not hotseat on launch or even an ETA till this date- the fact that I can't play sequential turns AT ALL with any HUMAN being is TOTALLY unacceptable. I can't even use the crappy Steam system to play sequential.

    16) Perm peace bug (See tech support threads if you don't know what that it.

*Praise* I like how the cities grow more organize instead of in a cookie cutter fashion, well done.

    17) No way to tell your planes to sleep till healed.

    18) Bad display of planes, if you send them out on a mission they will return but only as a "hidden" little number box on top of the city banner. No mention of this in the Civ pedia, and I was not the only one who thought so, found 3 other forum post siteing the same problem. Perhpas 2K could add to the Civ Pedia or when building a plane show under details how it will be displayed in the cities.

    19) MP saves, if you try to play 2 games within the same timeframe and either exceed 100 turns your auto save will be overridden. (Again I heard there was a copy and paste way to use Ctrl+S and stick it inside the MP save folder, but it is unprofessional of 2K to expect users to manipulate folders in a title release such as this.)

    20) Can't direct allied AI (in team games) what to do, they will often appear hostile-dispite being teamamtes and permadent allies. I should be ablt to tell them at any time how to support the team effort (build an army, get ready for an attack, help research this, loan me that resource, etc, etc.

    Ok Diplomacy. Here we go.
The AI has no idea what friendship means. Pacts of Coop don't mean ☺☺☺☺ to them. If you get on their border- they will war with you or have someone else do it on your behalf. I noticed INSTANTLY as I bordered an AI the other AIs all started acting aggressively toward me dispite me having a tech advantage and strong military. So I said maybe
it's cause they see me as a threat and are playing like you do in Risk (Kill the board leader). But if you don't have a tech lead or good military they will just kill you themselves. Keeping an AI ally that isn't a CS is not really doable soon as you border them. I have yet to see a game where aggressive AIs do not survive till the end. I'm always fighting Nap, Japan, etc. It's lame-same civs make it to the end all the time-which goes to show you how over effective warmongering really is. I'm not asking for Civ IV with a full graph and a cookie cutter method to guarantee friendship with an AI, but what if I wanna play a game where I don't have to act like a warmonger.

I'm not here to debate this list or hear the fan boys stick up for 2K or to use this as a thread for the haters to start a feeding hate frenzy. I love the series, been playing since Civ2 was released on the original playstation (and people thought revolution was the 1st console release) Ha!
This is a stand alone post and I will not respond to any baits thrown out by either side. If you have questions or would like to add to the list I'll attempt to update it from time to time, esp as new bugs appear- and since 2K failed to provide a good means of reporting bugs.
I love the series that's why I made this post, I hate to see it fall short of it's amazing potential!

I know some people like to pick at the little things like jungles giving +2 science or Windmills not being build on hills or whatever but I'm refraining from adding those o

Excellent and very well presented list by the OP. I heartily concur that somehow this game made it out the door without a number of great features that Civ 4 had.

Yes! On some plays I got in the habit of checking combat strength every 5 turns. And always looked at it before declaring war. I suppose the military advisor can give me a good idea, but not as clear as the graph.

    This thread is great.

    * The AI can't win a single battle vs. a human player, even if in total advantage.

    * The AI dislikes me for no apparent reason. If the AI offends me, it is hard to tell why and what kind of consequences my possible responses have. I would like to have an indicator for what I can do to resolve diplomacy issues.

*I experienced a never ending peace - I couldn't attack Germany anymore in the whole game.

    * If you load a savegame during an attack, the damage will be proceeded in your loaded game.

    * The tech tree is more like a tech list. You don't really have options.

    * I miss the city health feature of Civ4

    * You can't buy a court

    * You can't make military sleep/wait/skip a turn in a city sometimes

  28. #68
    Add to Diplomacy section:

Liberating Civ B's cities from Civ A causes Civ B to be mad at you for being at war with Civ A.

    There's gratitude for ya...

"You can't buy a court" is working as intended. 2K has officaly stated this already (sorry cna't find the link, perhaps it was on the featured gameplay video?)

I got a ROFL from Civ 5 AI today. Napoleon called me up saying I have amassed a large force on his borders (this is around 1500AD), him being on the other side of the map to me. I knew I had no units over there, but I checked anyway, and found a lone scout I left on explore moving past his borders.

This sort of thing is just getting ridiculous now.

Exclamation Please add my corrections/ suggestions

    =====
I can't save or load a game by DOUBLE-CLICKING the file name. Every other Windows program can do this.
The promotion tree does not properly state "or" often enough. Medic is available to Shock I, Drill I, Scouting II, OR Survivalism II. It does not require all four promotions. There are many examples of this.
    =====
I can't get the "Circumnavigate the world achievement" to work at all.
I can't get the "All Wonders built achievement" to work at all.
For some reason, I got the "Play with a Mod" achievement when there are none/ I have downloaded none.
The "First to explore 1000 tiles achievement" makes no sense. Is the computer actually keeping track of this?! What a waste of resources! It not only tracks all of the fog of war for all players and AI over all games but it keeps track of who saw each individual tile first?! WHY?!! For an achievement?!
Sorry, I'll try to calm down... It would be better just to make it an easy "1000 tiles explored achievement". So much easier on the calculations.
The "1000 Temples achievement" should realistically only be 50 temples. C'Mon Man. That's asking 100 games of 10 temples a piece. OMG!! O.o
The "1000 Mines achievement" should realistically only be 100 for the reason above. Especially when Mines are unbalanced right now.
The "1000 Forests cut achievement" should realistically only be 100 for the reason above.
The "Purchase 1000 tiles achievement" should realistically only be 100 for the reason above.
The "Sink 357 ships as England achievement" should realistically only be 50, and that's still pushing it pretty hard. Who thought about these achievements?! Do you WANT to only play as England for 3 months? Maybe Elizabeth could BUILD those units over time, but .
The Ottoman achievement shouldn't exist for reasons below.
I hope to Sid that the subroutines actually shut off when you get the proper achievements. The late game has too much slowdown as it is.
    =====
The Ottoman special ability of Barbary Corsairs is so laughably bad, it should be changed to almost ANYTHING ELSE. How about "Ottoman ships can pillage tile improvements on adjacent land tiles"? Now, was that so hard?
Why are crops reduced to just wheat and bananas? Why are livestock reduced to cattle and sheep? Why can't they actually be traded? This is a step backwards for diplomacy and civ building. I don't care that health as a limiter is out. They can still yield certain bonuses to the Civ that has access to them. How about "+1 food for 3 random cities"? The more kinds of food you have access to, the better.
    =====
    I may post more later...

    small update to the list.

Sorry for those lines that i haven't added yet, mostly because they are too subjective, too excessive (try to keep it short and to the point!) or a technical / hardware issue.
I decided not to include technical /hardware issues because they are often more individual problems, and after all there is an own subforum for this.

I tried to keep this list as objective-focused as possible, although there may be some rather subjective parts left in. These are kept in because they are confirmed to be agreed on by the majority of the community.

Attention: If anybody has any idea how to get this list to the developers, please do it!

Maybe if everyone of us tells them to take a look at this, they will do it....

Wrong. Very wrong. Very very wrong. Counting 10 values can not cause performance issues. You already got the data from the "unlocked" tiles from the map, the AI map.

Most of the issues i have discovered are covered well in this list, it MUST be made a sticky, I hope devs have a look at this and make some changes.

After just a few play throughs i'm done with this game until it gets fixed to a fun, yet challenging, rewarding and just sensible game. (I saw an enemy rifleman unit at about 1500BC and rage quit)

The reason you can't skip the first part of the movie is cos the game is STILL LOADING. Civ 5 loads up and plays the movie at the same time. If you disable the movie (via the .ini file) you'll be staring at a black screen for the same duration (on a powerful PC, that is). In slower PCs it obvious that disabling the movie speeds up the loading process.

Am I the only one who has a problem with the completely dumbed down air forces? Why would would they remove the reconnaissance function when it's one of the main missions the air force do in a modern war? Also, why can't they bomb the improvements? Why did they make having a formidable air force, absolutely worthless. I seriously miss the way a single carrier could bring an entire nation on it's knees after bombing all the resources, when they had no anti-air units. Why can't cannons bombard improvements either? Using land units to recon and pillage in the midst of an enemy country is a little impractical.

I encountered a weird bug in my earlier game as France. I suddenly got the message stating that I've been defeated. It didn't let me continue playing and when I tried to see who had defeated me I was a little confused when the winner of the game was "nobody". I loaded an autosave 1 turn prior to my defeat and ended my turn and I didn't lose again? I won a time victory in this same game. It must've been a bug since I didn't lose again after loading the save.

    Add:
The "Fast Combat" Option should be again an Option in the Optionsmenu not an Option in the Advanced Games Set up Option section.

*unlocked "Most Options in one sentence" Achievment*

At the start of the game it's nice to have the graphics but at larger invasions/battles i want to turn it of to speed things up.

I really, really hope the Dev's take a look at the List on the first page. I most certainly agree with almost all the points mentioned there...

Concerning the Achievments mentioned here... Well... I really don't care.
