Bumping this thread to see if Greg or anyone else has new info on this point... when can we expect the C/C++ SDK with the AI source code?
Also, I believe the current SDK is still missing a tool for editing the meshes of 3D models -- what about that one? I think the problem here was some proprietary format of DDS files.
I think the problem with 3D models is complex and more than just Copyright concerns;
-- Bink's Granny modeling is "Licensed" by Firaxis and was also extensively adapted with supplemental features for the CiV engine.
-- Nexus seems to have been provided for inspection purposes only. Their decision, i sure do hope they will eventually allow for direct GDI processing & full creative control though.
SDK also has to be documented more extensively in certain areas. ModBuddy is certainly not a device for casual gamers or amateur coders. Browsing MODS ingame is too sensitive to let everyone in, as proven by some weird attempts that actually crashed the parser with flawed "Thanks" fields a few times already. Dig deeper in pre_compiled *.files and we even run the risk of runtime failures.
Hi, total noob question, where is the modding tools from post #1? i cannot see STEAM->LIBRARY->TOOLS?????Sid CIV SDK????
BTW, what language is it written in, I know 'C', Basic, Pascal, BLitzbasic. I'm hoping it's menu driven so I don't need to do low level coding ..
.
The SDK includes various tools, nothing to do modding of the game source yet, so the direct editing and writing is in Lua and XML/SQL. There's also a tool to edit maps and prepare scenarios, and one to handle 3D assets (though it doesn't really work)
..where? thanks
Go to your library, and select the dropdown (IE, where it says All Games, or Installed, or whatever filter you have it on). Select Tools.
It's called Sid Meier's Civilization V SDK. So long as you own the game, you can download it.
And it's in XML, SQL, and Lua atm. C++ will be possible once the sources are available.
Bumping for Great Justice.
2KGreg, it's now June... any word at all on when the Source will be made available? Any news, good or bad, is better than noneIf you could put some kind of word out to the community, even if it was a ballpark timeframe, I think it would help manage expectations as to what kind of genuine modding opportunities are going to exist...?
Or at least a confirmation that Firaxis/2K is still planning on releasing a source code SDK. So those of us who are waiting for it don't suffocate while holding our breaths...
How often do we want this confirmation? Not long ago the phrase "when you get access to the source" (to paraphrase) was used on the wiki by a Firaxis person, so as far as that person knew at that time, it was still the plan. Maybe we want just one more statement that it is intended, and then a promise that if they decide not to, as in never (rather than a delay), they will tell us?
Ok, I'll keep this simple. Re-read my Bump. I'll highlight the pertinent parts.
"2KGreg, it's now June... any word at all on when the Source will be made available? SamBC, your sarcasm isn't even relevant to my query, so it's out of place in more ways than one. So, if you're quite done hijacking the thread, can I politely request you pipe down until we get an effective answer?
Greg2K, Can 2K please advise as to a projected timeframe by which the Source will be available? Day Zero was 3Q's ago. Like anything, releasing the Source would be Project Managed to some degree, so it's a fair question and a legitimate question.
Firstly, I wasn't being sarcastic; secondly, I was replying to MegaBearsFan, not to you - he asked for the confirmation, I pointed out that it's been strongly indicated that it would happen fairly recently.
As a third point, who put you in charge of who gets to speak where? This is a public forum, not a private Q&A. If you want only Greg to answer, PM him.
Look, not wanting to get into one of those oh-so-productive "arguments on teh intarwebz", but posting an opinion that asking for more confirmation is a waste of time in a paragraph reinforced by a summative sentence suggesting one more confirmation is easily interpreted as sarcasm. Just sayin'.
And while you weren't responding to me in specific, MegaBearsFan isn't exactly being a tard or noob by posting what he has either. When was the last post in this thread that specifically dealt with the Source? Mid Feb? It's now Early June, with multiple DLCs being released since then... asking whether or not they still intend to release the Source at all, a move which might concievably interfere with whatever DLC-centric business model they have, is also a relevant query given the amount of time passed.
Dude, no one put me in charge of anything (Good thing too), and if I suggested you should <Insert four letter acronym regarding being silent>, I apologise - that was not my intent. My intended message was rather "<Insert four letter acronym regarding being silent> if you are going to Hijack the thread or draw potential away from legitimate questions which at this point deserve some kind of answer or response". If you're going to contribute, by all means post away. But having visibility taken away from valid questions isn't helpful to anyone... which BTW explains why I put my questions here rather than PMing Greg2K; these are questions important not just for me, but for the COMMUNITY. If I was a lone figure asking for the Source, perhaps a PM would make sense. But I'm not, so I don't think it does.
@SamBC: I hadn't seen the wiki recently. I withdraw the request.
I was mentioning the wiki post because I thought people here might not have seen it; thus, it might be useful to people to be aware of it. Thus, I think any agro that's coming out of this is ultimately down to a series of small misunderstandings building on one another. Take a breath.
If you post stuff in a forum, other people will answer. It's both unreasonable and unrealistic to expect them not to. They may be able to provide more recent information than people were aware of - I don't assume people here follow the Wiki, and there was information posted there by a Firaxis person on the 15th April (longer ago than I thought, I'll admit) that included a very strong implication that it's still intended ("useful for when you guys the source"). That's not up-to-the-minute and authoritative, but I figured it's quite possibly more recent than people may have seen, as born out by MegaBeartsFan's further post. Further, challenging what I posted by reference to your earlier post, when that isn't what I replied to, is at the very least strange, assuming a maximum amount of goodwill. I wasn't meaning to be rude to MegaBearsFan, and don't think I was, but if I was inadvertently so I'll happily apologise to MegaBearsFan; I'm quite sure that MegaBearsFan is capable of telling me if I was offensive.
However, any further agro doesn't make sense, as your rude points were, as you have clarified, intended to be conditioned on the premise that I was thread hijacking. I'm not sure why you felt the need to say anything based on that premise, but there we go. All's well that ends well.
@SamBC: no offense taken. You weren't rude at all. Mostly, I just felt stupid and embarassed that I had posted without first taking a few minutes to see if there actually had been any updates since the last time I had checked (way back in the first week or two of April).
Just an update for anyone interested.... Dennis Shirk has advised that the Civ 5 DLL is almost ready for Beta.

Sweet! Thanks for update Uncle Anton!
Let the Loving commence
Duh. Found my answer.
Has Anyone heard anything more about the DLL? I mean obviously we've got G&K coming, but considering the last we heard about it was it entering Beta back in June 2011??
Not I. My guess is that the full SDK will drop when Firaxis has released its last commercial DLC or expansion, and no sooner.![]()
Hurry up and release the DLL so the modders can actually make a game worth playing.
I've opened a thread to determine game options for a poll in which people will vote for the game or games they want to be developed.
Check it in the link below:

but that is not how it works, at least for me. it lists my map, not under mods or scenarios, and when i try to play it, it ignores half of what i created, such as starting locations and other changes. it will load the map, but without the cities i added. and attempting to run it through modbuddy doesn't change anything (except my blood pressure).
Hey guys! I'm just getting into modding so if you're interested, I posted a walkthrough video on YouTube on How to Add Buildings to Civ 5 and I'm coming out with new videos really soon! Check them out to get the up-to-date videos on modding before BNW comes out!
