    Freezes when encountering enemy civilization

I haven't seen anyone else with this problem, yet.

The game freezes completely as soon as I move a unit to where an enemy city can be seen for the first time. City States work fine, Barbarians work fine, but as soon as someone else's city comes into view the game and my computer lock up completely, forcing me to do a hard reset (ouch). This happens both in the demo version and the full version of the game.

    Windows 7 x64
    2x 5850 in CrossfireX with 3 monitors in Eyefinity (4800 x 1200)

I've tried running the directx installer in the game folder and changes to graphics settings, but it hasn't changed anything. It appears to work just fine until that first encounter with another civilization occurs, so it doesn't seem like a graphics problem. Some kind of script appears to be broken.

I have the exact same problem. I played through to the industrial age before encountering another civ. But every time I first encounter another civ, I get a black screen, and the microsoft mssg about "civ 5 experiencing a problem". And can only ctd.

I have the latest drivers. Have turned all settings to min and still happens. Different setup to the OP, win xp.

My system is quite old now, was top of the line about 7 yrs ago, only sys req I dont quite meet is the video card, using a Nvidia 7800GS, cant upgrade any higher. But everything else in the game has been running smoothly. And suspect the OP exceeds all the reqs and has the same problem.

Any help welcome. If not, guess I shelve the game til I get a new system nxt year.

    Cheers,

    Sirac

I have this too but I managed to fix it by setting leader animations to minimal (and running on dx9)

I have figured out that the crash happens any time the game tries to launch a leader dialog while running in DX11 mode. Putting all graphics settings having to do with leaders has no effect. Computer crashes hard no matter what the settings or resolution are if it's in DX11.

It does work in DX9, but then I have a different problem. I am able to choose a resolution of 4800x1200 (my eyefinity resolution), but the right half of my screen is just grey. Icons and menu items appear over the greyness, but units and terrain are covered up.

So the only way to play the game for me, currently, is in DX9 on one monitor, which kind of sucks because it goes to my left monitor and my neck hurts after a few hours of that.

    edit:

aha! It works in windowed mode without freezing. I have the leader graphics setting at minimum, I haven't tried it with any other.
