    Runtime error loading saved game

Any saved game I have that is at turn 450 of an epic speed huge map game fails. I try to reload from an earlier version but doing the same course of events (taking over montezuma's last two cities) results in a game crash and then not being able to load saves from that game.

Matter of fact even if I don't attack montezuma and take two other cities I get the same crash. I think possibly I hit some limit on the amount of cities I could have. I have 69 cities, the vast majority of them puppet cities. When I capture the 70th one the game crashes on the end of that turn. When I reload the saves from that turn (after capturing the 70th city) then all of the below errors happen.

    Here are the error details...

I even made three different saves, a quick save, save1 and save2 just to see if the save files were getting corrupt but all of them throw the same error if they at that turn.. or rather that course of events. Here is my DX Diag

Me too. Suddenly trying to load any save or auto save, run time error.

wait, I loaded a much earlier save and it did work. It does seem to be some kind of milestone, number of cities, etc. that causes this.

I also see the intro screen right before it fails.

I have repeatedly created this issue. When you have 70 cities the game crashes. Any save you save with 70+ cities will crash on load.

Right now I am just razing all of my cities and keeping it at 69 and it works just fine for me. The second I miscount and it goes to 70 this issue occurs again.

At this point if someone wants my save file (if there is a way to do that) so they can recreate it for themselves I think that would be beneficial.

This has nothing to do with DXDiags at this point.

    It is either:

    a) you just can't have more than 69 cities
    b) there are far to many notices that pop up and overflows that stack.

Go to Start menu then run then type in DXdiag and hit enter. If you are using windows 7 just hit start then type in DXdiag and hit enter.

From there click "save all information" and it will write out all your system info to a file.

They want you to paste it in here usually in case it is system specific, which I am 99.9% positive this is not... it is just a hard cap on cities they aren't checking for.

The drivers your computer shipped with, however, are over a year old and should be updated.

In addition, do NOT update from DELL.

Get the updates from the part manufacturers please.

Mine are from Sept 14th 2010... it's not that.

Why would having more than 69 cities have anything to do with your drivers? Or are you just trying to eliminate the obvious first.

If you were wondering... yes my computer was plugged in

Can I please get some other response to my thread other than "update your drivers"....

I think I provided ample information that it is not something as simple as that, and I actually read the FAQ and troubleshooting information and tried all of that before I started counting my cities....

So can I get a little more help than that, or more detailed requests... like a saved game?

    Roloc,

Same problem is going on in this thread - first time I've heard the 70+ cities so far.

My developer mind (granted not of games) says that this number may very depending on map type. Which is why you hear it happening on different turns.

Roloc, same problem, crash at 70th city. This is extremely annoying, after spending 10h+ into a game you can't finish.

Found this thread while searching information on a crash im getting. My game crashes when I have 65 cities. I can load the game up if I delete the cache files in the game folder but whenever I click next turn, it will crash.

I'm running standard game speed on huge map.

Here's some additional food for thought.
Not only do I get the crashing issues when I have +69 cites under my control also occurs just connecting over 69 cities via roads. EG: I have roads connecting 69 or 70 cities and city states to my capital. My workers just connected another city state to the capital. Not only does it crash when I hit next turn but the games crashes just loading the save game file as well. I have a support request into 2Kgames and I'll mention this bit of info when/if they respond.

Certainly puts a dent in playing marathon games.

Ahh ha! Very well done! It could be 70 cities in a trade network that does it to! I hadn't thought of that and could potentially explain why some people on much smaller maps are running into similar issues.

Apparently I prefer terrorizing over trading

Mostly everyone that seems to have in-game issues is playing on the huge map setting. Is anyone getting problems with any of the other sized maps?

It seems that way. There is another ticket that claims that it happens per turn, but I think it is far more likely tied to a cap per map size of either the trade network or cities owned.

  27. #27
And regarding the Runtime error with saved games, I had that issue with one of mine awhile back, and I think it's just a corrupt save file. I just loaded one of the autosaves from before and re-saved when I got back to that point, which loaded up just fine.

It's definitely a good idea to put your autosaves to each turn as opposed to the default.

Yeah I have had them just corrupted before to. The city limit thing always seems to corrupt it though. Meaning if I load an autosave before and capture the 70th city it gets corrupted right away.

I learned the hard way to set autosave to every turn this way.

Well, the latest patch (1.0.0.20) does not fix these issues. I have started a new game to test connected cities in general and will save a fork to test connected trade routes. I'll keep you all posted on my tests. No response from 2kGames Canada on my queries thus far.

eah I'm getting the exact same crap BUT both times (i have saves that wont load) have been different turn amounts. one game just wont work anymore at 180turns and one at like 195 I cant check but I do have lots of cities too.

oh sry dbl post but i am having this occur in normal map sizes, the only consistent fact is that it happens laaate in the game. Which really sucks

  32. #32
Same problem here... Anyone has tried to re-download the game and avoid the installation of the new patch (.20)?

Maybe there is something wrong with it...

nah i got it once before the patch too.

  34. #34
The problem existed since 1.0.017 since that was the version I had first encountered it on. 1.0.0.20 patch doesn't take care of this or make it worse. Although, I must admit that I have more non +70 city related crashes since the auto update. As it is by the end of this weekend or sooner, I should have a bunch of save games for the devs to take a look at for the +70 city problem......

LOL this is funny, I quit work for 7 days to play Civ5 AND... it is not working, so I will have to wait for probably 7 days for a patch... This is ironic

Actually I encountered this problem with the initial launch code.

    Same thing happening here.

My game was running but it was running terrible slow. Had tried all the nvidia driver tricks suggested in other threads so I had something else than my video card (nvidia 470 based ASUS card) suspected of being the problem - actually thought that it might be my SSD that I initially installed it on (my boot C drive) so I uninstalled the game and Steam from the SSD and installed it on my harddrive afterwards. Now I can't load any games. A soon as I press "Load Game" it crashes with the C++ error and steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v\CivilizationV_DX11.exe being the problem. This happens also when I run the directX 9 version, the faulting app is then ofcourse the directX9 launcher .

Tried installing/uninstalling all the C++ runtimes suggested 2005/2008/2010 but with no change, the problem also happens when there is no C++ installed.

So I'm kind of stuck here as I don't wanna have my PC running all the time just to keep my game running and to keep me from having to load a game.....

Really hope that someone from 2K Games can help us out here as I must admit that I had fun playing it (read newspapers while the game was busy being slow when running on my initial installation but eventually I ran out of newspaper)........

Haha it's funny you say that because I finished a bout 200 pages in the book I was reading on launch day waiting between turns.

If only I was back to just having a slow game then I could go fetch the book I'm currently reading

I cannot load ANY savegames. (I could last night.) I either get a runtime error and it crashes or it just crashes.

    Great.
