This right here could be part of your problem. Someone earlier in this thread discovered a bug in which vsync did not work for this particular resolution for some odd reason.
Your video card still shouldn't overheat, but the ability to use vsync could have been your workaround.
Update: after new hardrives, which included a fresh install of everything, and 2 new (referbished) video cards (same make and model), I finealy stumbled across the solution. Removing the latest ATI drivers 12.10, including running driver sweeper, and installing the currently approved Dell version of ATI driver, 8.63. This version does not have a temp monitor or fan control, however I have not had a computer shutdown while playing Civ5. (which I was having due to video card overheaing when useing the latest drivers) I will still probably get a new video card, but at least I can play again with what I have for now.
Try this out for overheating issues:
Remove the side of the computer case, and run a 16" household fan blasting into it. It reduced my temps to a safe 60C at 50% fan speed. I could get a lot less, but I don't want to take out my awesome sound card which restricts some airflow to the vid card fan. $10 fan vs. $300 card. Worth a shot.
Cod Black Ops is what finally roasted my 9800 GT, and I think Civ did have a part in it. It's nice that ATI comes with software which will tell you your GPU temp.
COD Black OPs has no heat influence like this game.
Does anyone know if this issue is being addressed by the 2k devs for a future patch or are we left with a A) try this B) if that doesn't work try this C) if nothing else works try this or D) don't play the game if you fear h/w damage?
I can't find information on fan speed or temperature, but my computer becomes hot to the touch when I play. When I play the game, the computer often ends up shutting off, and I have to do a static discharge to get it working again. The .exe files for some recently installed programs have disappeared off my computer. Recently, after starting up my computer after yet another shutoff, I got a BSOD. Computer is working but I was worried so I called Lenovo, and they want me to send my computer in.
I have the following video card setup, with the latest drivers, running with Windows XP and 3 GB ram. I try to play CIV but I get 2-3 turns into the game and it freezes with graphics corruption. I have tried in windowed and non-windowed modes. When I alt-tab to the Catalyst Control Centre I see the GPU running at 99%, the temperature at 45 degrees and the fan at 75% (set by me). I have turned the graphics settings down to low/medium at 1680 X 1050. I can play any other game with no issue, including Dragon Age.

I had to buy a lap desk with two fans because of how hot my card got. No crashes since.

I have the overheating issue too. I played the game during October last year with no overheating issues. I have recently come back to it to see how it played since that big patch and now overheating is a real issue. Same hardware. I think the cause is there is no FPS cap in the game. I am seeing huge numbers for FPS where the graphics cards are just running wild. Can someone confirm if there is or is not a frame limiting configuarable option anywhere in CIV 5. This is the issue that plagued Starcraft on release and left people with fried graphic cards. Note: Blizzard admitted this was an issue and fixed it!!!

Just thought I'd chime in on this debate as I've been getting many display driver stopped responding crashes for this game only. After clean installing the drivers from fresh to make sure there were no problems, making sure my system was dust free (which I do anyway), and even reinstalling the whole game I started looking for other reasons. Downloaded software to let me monitor temps and fan speeds. I'm currently playing 3 games (Fallout:NV, Dragon Age 2 and Civ 5) and used them as a test.
I played 3 hours solidly with each of the above games fresh from booting the machine up on different days (so no residual temperature left in the system). On the other 2 games my fan speeds don't seem to need to get over 60-some %, whereas in Civ 5 they're running at 100%, yet the cards (2 GTX295's in quad SLI) are still over 20 degrees celsius hotter than with the other two games. I've tried running without SLI but it makes negligible difference.
I'm not really sure why this game runs GPU's so hot, but it majorly stresses my cards much more than other games. So I can see why for some peoples systems it's been the rather large straw, more aptly the whole hay bale, that broke the camels back and killed off their GPU's.

Well, the new patch is out and I'm having worse trouble with my quad SLI since the new patch. I noticed the game was very juddery on my usual smooth settings and some of the tiles were black (hadn't happened prior to the patch) so checked my GPU's.
My second card isn't really working to balance the load. Whereas before this patch the workload was spread pretty evenly across both cards, causing them both to work hard and hot with 100% fan speed, now my second card is running cooler than the first card by far (around 25 degrees celsius cooler), it's fan speed barely hitting 70%, yet my number 1 card is at 100% and reaching ridiculous temps of constantly over 100 degrees celsius, up to 110.
Anyone else with SLI might want to check see if their cards are behaving as they were prior to the patch. Noteably the cards are fine and performing normally on other games at way cooler temperatures. For the moment I'm not going to risk playing anymore, which is a pity as the changes looked good.
I am running an HD 4650 and had heat issues. The card would burn up if I didn't keep changing to strategic view. That would cool the card down after a minute and I could continue playing for about 15 more minutes. When I was at the store browsing around I saw an expansion slot cooler. What I bought was the Antec Vcool it cost about $15 dollars. My card went from 110+ on this game to never going over 70. It's also allowed me to overclock the card on this game without any issues so far. That's territory I would not dare venture before. I can turn all of the graphics back up and actually play this game. It's unlikely this would work on a card encased in plastic. Good luck.

i was playin this game for about 3months, since i bought it in march, something like over 10 hours a day, some days more, some days less. 3 days ago my pc start crashin, similarly like youve posted above. again, and again, after a couple of moments after loading the game, again and again. ive tryed after the witcher1, starcraft2,... to play too and pc reacted as was always and usual. very friendly. no strange fan beep voice, no crashing..., so, for last 2-3days of not playing i browsed a lot of forums threads about civ5 crashing, so the q is, can/will some new patch of the game fix the issue about the overheating or not. if the game can really heavy harm the pc by playing it, and the way of playin it is to adjust the fan and the minimalize all the grafics, even the window, in todays era, its sad. thank you in advance for your kind reply. *civ5 fan*
Had to replace my video card. With the new card I set the fan at 100. While not playing Civ5 it runs between 32 and 38 degrees. After 15+ minutes of Civ5 it was up to 48 degrees. A fairly significant increase. I have not seen anything like this with other games.
Three points:
1) A GPU temp of 48C is cold. A loaded GPU temperature of 60-70C is normal. It's only hot once it reaches 90C, and most GPUs can handle 100C without any damage. (Note: However, some memory modules cannot, and may start to fault at 90C or so).
2) If you've never seen anything like this, then you haven't played many games. There are lots of games that drive GPUs as hard or harder than Civ V. However, they're not the games you expect. Straight FPS games are usually pretty easy on GPUs as FPS players want high frame rates. On the other hand, Starcraft II is even easier as it's not rendering a full 3D scene, and most of its "3D" details are just pre-rendered textures/sprites/backgrounds and take virtually no power. The more stressful games for GPUs are usually strategy/roleplaying games (think: Metro 2033, Dragon Age, Total War, etc) where huge cinematic scenes are rendered in full detail. Civ V is similarly fully-rendered, but it has the complication of a much larger library of textures. This stresses different parts of a GPU, and so some GPUs which are tuned for FPS-style games (lots of fast geometry) are going to struggle with Civ V's heavy texture transforms.
3) There are a collection of reasons why people are having unexpected heat issues with Civ V, most of them stemming from the fact that your average Civ V player hasn't bought or configured their system with any thought to cooling. Most FPS gamers are used to this sort of thing and therefore don't have the same sorts of trouble. I'm no FPS gamer, but I do build my own systems (for quiet more than performance) and take cooling seriously. I've had zero problems with Civ V. My GPU is idling right now at 33C. When gaming, it reaches 65-75C. I have the fans topping out at just 35%. However, my system is set up to stay cool.
I do realize that 48 degrees is not hot, but 33% is a fairly significant increase over just a short period of time and indicates that the game is responsible for the temperature rise as this rate of increase has not happened with any other programs. I don't play FPS games, but other strategy and simulation games.
I had been playing Civ5 for longer periods with the older card and should have checked it for overheating. When it started giving error reports and shutting down after running for only 15-20 minutes while reviewing email it was time to replace it. This was after returning from a two week vacation, not having any problems prior to the vacation, and not playing Civ5 after returning home. Also, I hadn't seen this thread until after having problems with the video card.
My case has also been optimized for cooling since cooler temperatures tend to provide better efficiency. When I have time, job permitting, I will be increasing the duration of game play in order to see what the rate of temperature increase is over time. Along with comparing temperatures using DX9, 10, and 11. However, with the new card I do not expect to have any of the heat issues that the old card. which was towards the minimum requirements, had.
You're right that the game is responsible for the increase. That was never in question. That's what it's supposed to do. The question is whether this is worthy of discussion. My video card idles at about 32-36C (with Win7-Aero enabled). When gaming it reaches 65C. That's almost 100% increase in temperature.
And its totally normal.
Gamers expect cards to idle around 30C and many of them will push their cards past 80C when doing intense gaming. A 33% increase is actually pretty small, and for system builders, means that either your idle temperature is high (low intake, poor exhaust, dead spots) or that you're just not stressing your card. I could keep my card cooler under load, but I prefer the lower fan speed. It tops out at 75C (when the fan finally reaches about 50%) and that's totally acceptable for me.
NOTE: Not all cards are capable of this. Some cards, especially weaker cards or stripped down versions of more powerful cards struggle to maintain flawless operation at 80C. Don't assume that just because a high quality card can run at 100C, that your $50 card can, too. For the most part, however, operating temperatures of up to 75C are not a problem for any card capable of modern games.
Depending on the games, that's probably why you think its abnormal. Judging by the fact that your card first overheated playing Civ V, it means they're not very graphically intense. Understand that there's a whole world of games out there, and Civ V is just middle-of-the-pack for recent games, when considering graphics requirements.
Thermal degradation on video cards can be either acute (if you really hit it hard with something its not prepared for, eg: The Starcraft 2 menu-screen "issue") or chronic (when you routinely overheat and cool the GPU). You probably experience the second one. After repeated heating/cooling cycles, small cracks started forming. After leaving it cold for a long period of times, the cracks grew. When it heated back up the next time you fired up the game, the cracks started causing critical errors. The damage had been happening for a while, it just wasn't apparent yet.
Unrelated, but: You seem to be approaching it the wrong way. Instead of trying to keep your system cool to increase efficiency, you should buy more efficient parts, which will naturally run cooler. The efficiency you gain by dropping your system temperature even 10C, is minor (a couple percentage points, at best), while buying more efficient parts can result in much more gain, as you are now producing less of the heat you used to work to get rid of.
I just replaced my trusty 9800GT (no problems with it) with GTX 560 Ti. (And my PSU as well.) The rest of the system is i7-920 with 6 GB memory and Windows 7.
The shouting fan got my notice in less than 5 minutes and I had to close the game.
Windowed mode and vsync seems to help but haven't yet done longer trial with them.
My Radeon HD5770 just burned out playing Civ5, newest patch ( case has three fans and has never had any heat issues ).

Adding to the pile hoping it will help:
I have an Asus "Gaming" laptop with an Intel i7 and an ATI HD5730 mobility video card (more details below in the DxDiag). I could always run games fine (although I played sporadically) and it heated up but there were never any issues, that is until I started playing Civ V. At first it crashed my computer once, and I thought it was a fluke so I kept playing. After a few crashes I decided to look it up and I found that my issues was overheating with Civ V (as shown in this forum). I tried pretty much everything that has ever been posted about this problem (update drivers, vsync, etc), I even ran the game at lowest settings in DX9 and it STILL overheated my computer.
I use SpeedFan to monitor my temps and when Idle my comp is around ~70C and while playing Civ it gets to ~100C+, while playing other games it hovers around ~90. Also, the fan is running full blast with any game. You might say that my computer is poorly built and not meant for playing games, but remember this: NO GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED (Including SCII, Crysis, Farcry2, and a few others I consider comparable graphics) has EVER caused my computer to overheat and hard shut down.
While diagnosing and trying things so I could play Civ V, it must have broken my video card in some way from all the crashes. Now, any game I play (even PORTAL 1, Bioshock 1) will overheat and crash my computer. At least it hasn't killed my video card outright, but now my computer cannot play games.
Also, I checked my "cooling system" and it is perfectly clean.
I hope this story and my DxDiag below helps the developers come up with a fix, but in short:
1. My computer ran all games at max or almost max settings with no problems
2. Once I started playing Civ V it started overheating, and nothing worked to stop it (other than playing in strategic mode).
3. After a few of these overheating crashes my computer can't really play games.

While no doubt Civ V can heat up hardware, you have already figured out the your issue. Laptops run hot with relatively poor cooling systems and restricted air flow which is why many, many latpop gamers invest in supplemenetal cooling pads to stop their systems from overheating and shutting down (and not just to play Civ V, other games do it as well). Simply, laptops don't manage heat very well. While a desktop might run 40C -50C on idle, you are idling at 70C so are already very hot. With your system not being all that high end, its also going to be fully stressed playing Civ V which just makes it worse.
Yes, Civ V can cause your system and particularly your gpu to run hotter than lots of other games but that's the price of the experience it delivers. While you are suggesting the game needs to adjust to your platform, it might be better to take the approach that your laptop is not quite suitable for the game as is so you need to improve cooling. As a practical matter runnning at 70C on idle for any system is not going help you get long life out of that system and going to 100C is inviting premature failure (and perhaps you have already cooked your system).
I also have an Asus laptop, though not the gaming one.
A note about Asus gaming laptops: They were designed to cool much better than really just about any laptop, so while I agree desktops will always be better at cooling, there really shouldn't be a reason why the gaming laptop isn't strong enough to cool a game like Civ5 off.
My laptop is an i7 740 but with an NVidia card (425M), and like mando335, Civ5 resulted in numerous overheating problems and full system crashes (and was the only game that did).
A note: While I'm afraid to test Civ5 these days by playing marathon games, some things that helped me were: a) get a usb-powered cooling pad with strong fans to use whether on your lap or even at your desk, b) update/rollback your most recent video card update to the one recommended BY ASUS. Do not update the latest drivers from ATI/NVidia directly. Note also that there have been several Civ5 patches, some of which may have attended to this somewhat. As always, research these things before implementing them.
I also installed SpeedFan to help determine what was going on when I was having so many crashes, and determined that my system was crashing when my GPU reached somewhere into 70C+ range. I haven't seen it reach that high since the changes, and have had only one or two crashes. Regular operating temperature of the GPU is 48C.
Is there any information available on whether the GaK expansion pack will solve/alleviate this heating issue?
My own rig (i7-2630QM, 540M GT, 8gb RAM w/ cooling pad) gets to around the mid-70s while gaming which while doable is far from any kind of comfort zone. Windowed mode, different resolutions and altering the graphics doesn't appear to solve any of this. The only solution I've found is to run the game in strategic view and then the temps tend to steady out in the low 60s.
Short answer is probably no as they are not changing the core design that is very GPU intensive. If you have heat issues with your platform now you will continue to have heat issues later. Not sure that's a software issue anway but a function of platform design.
Well, it is a software issue in that it's poorly optimized graphics code that is causing the problem. Even a 'cease all animations' configuration might go some way to resolving the matter. The fact that the temps drop off dramatically once animations are taken out of it leads me to believe that the problem lies there. There is a certain amount of platform limitations involved of course.
Still, hopefully there'll at least be a nod in the general direction of those who are worried about the life of their laptops and who want to play Civ 5.

Any computer running ordinary applications should not overheat. No game should be able to drive your computer to overheat. If, while playing a game or using any (user-mode) application, your system overheats, then the fault lies with your computer and its inability to properly dissipate the heat generated by the computational abilities it offers the game/application.

In fact, highly optimized graphics code will put even more stress on your video card and its cooling, as it will push the shaders and memory pipelines even harder. GPUs (and CPUs) have no concept of how "hard" the work they are doing is. They just do math. Multiplication is no harder than checking if something is zero (though it takes longer). If you reduce the amount of math it takes to draw a frame, they'll just draw more frames, and in many cases, it's actually more stressful on a video card to draw a lot of frames than to spend more time drawing a smaller number of frames. Either way, unless your video card exceeds the abilities of your CPU/IO-System, it's going to spend all of its time drawing. The amount of optimization only changes the quality that you see, not the amount of work being done.
The irony here is that what you really want is a less optimized graphics system. Chances are you'd see better stability if you used one of the driver mods that caps the framerate of the game at some low level. This accomplishes what you thought you were asking for: less work for your video card. Of course, you're inevitably giving up video quality to achieve this.
In truth, what you really need is a competent cooling system for your computer. Sadly, many laptops are manufactured with cooling systems that cannot handle a fully loaded system. They can handle fully loaded CPUs or fully loaded GPUs. Games like Civ 5 that load both CPU and GPU at the same time, tend to give them problems, as these laptops often use the same cooling system for both components.
That said, there are plenty of manufacturers who do put good cooling systems in their laptops, and it's not (just) Alienware and other overpriced gaming laptops. I sympathize with you. My wife had a laptop that couldn't play Civ 4 due to overheating issues. But the first thing you need to do is recognize that the problem is with your laptop, not the game.

I am locking to 6fps (in 30C room) to 10fps (in 22C room) for myself, which is an envy 17 from HP, while my friend are locking at 12fps to 20 fps for his M14X. no external cooling is needed.

You are running Civ 5, on an underpowered laptop, with a 3 year old video driver.
The driver i wouldnt expect to be the cause of the artifacts, but the amount of heat the graphics card will be generating, in order to stress itself to run Civ5 will probably be the cause.
A newer driver MIGHT give an updated cooling profile that helps, but it may not either
