    100% CTD during Strategic view

So, I like to play with the Strategic view, because I like to spend my time making decisions and not watching the same animation 10000 times in a row.

Unfortunately, it has been crashing to desktop just about every time after about 10 turns in this view. Not sure what causes it but it happens every time.

Can you post the top sections of your DXDIAG (down through video). Also, in your preferences, do you have Strategic View set to high-resolution textures?

I don't have this happen all the time but have had 3 to 4 CTDs when trying to switch back from strategic to normal.

    Running:

    Dell XPS M1730
    2g ram
    2.2 Intel core Duo
    Vista Home
    NVidia 8700M GT

Same issue here. I go into strategic, move around a bit, and BOOM. CTD. Nevermind that I can't play in DX 11, and no one is doing anything about it...

    Edit: DXdiag info.

before discovering the strategic view i played several complete games without a single crash, thus i'm pretty sure it has something to do with strategic view :/

just in case volume of complaints has any affect on whether this issue will be addressed or not, I am having this issue as well. It's 100% consistent.

Same issue here. I can go 1 turn or 100 turns then it just CTD. Changed all setting to low, changed resolution, ran windowed, ran as admin… made no difference.

Same here. Happens every time when I open the strategic map. It is independent of any settings I can choose in the graphical options including windowed, fullscreen or high-res textures.

It is also unaffected by the type of actions I do on the strategic map. It will CTD after a short amount of time, even if you just sit there, without moving the mouse or doing anything at all.

How fast the crash appears seems to be connected to the zoom level of the strategic map. The more zoomed out the view is, the faster the crash appears. It will happen regardless after a short amount of time though.

DXDIAG at external nopaste, because the length restrictions on forum posts don't allow me to post it (even just the graphics section) here.

I'm running into the same thing. Game runs perfectly fine in regular mode but will invariably generate a CTD in strategic mode. I think my longest stretch in strategic mode is 10 turns.

  14. #14
Can we have an estimate release date of a patch that will fix this problem please ?

Because right that's pretty much the only thing that stops me from purchasing the game.

24 hours pass and there's no replies from tech support :/

Having the same issue here. It happens more frequently in DX9 mode, but does happen on both.

    9800GTX+, E8400 3.0Ghz Dual-Core, 4 GB RAM, 7 Home Premium

Well within the minimum specs, and mostly within the recommended.

Would really appreciate a response at some point, 2K.... :\

  17. #17
and yet another day passes with no response..

  18. #18
Spathi, with a strange issue, it will take time to narrow down.

Id rather the Developers work on it, than keep me updated on the fix.

I get this consistently as well on both DX9 and 10/11. After opening Strategic View it will always crash within 5-10 seconds. I found turning V-Sync on seems to stop it though.
Something to do with the FPS? When V-Sync is off and I open Strategic View, the FPS gets up to 500ish before the crash, whereas V-Sync obviously caps it.

I might as well post in here since this is one of the many problems I'm experiencing with this game.

Strategic view crashes for me randomly just by the virtue of being IN strategic view.

About 1 in 5 times I can stay in strategic view as long as I don't move the camera too much and exit within 10 seconds.

But if I stay in it longer than 30 seconds and move the camera around a bit it's almost a guaranteed crash.

When I started up the game trying to reproduced this it crashed about 5 seconds after starting strategic view.

Your video card is lower than the min-spec card we've identified on the nVidia side. You can see a comparison of the different cards here:

FYI the 8600 gets the same performance on 3DMark as the average score of people using a 7900.

And strategic view actually takes less resources than normal view.

Jumping on every opportunity to pass the responsibility when at the same time you're ignoring the other 90% of the problems isn't doing you any favors either.

EDIT: After reading jryder post I decided to try to reproduce the bug with VSync I discovered much to my surprised that the game stopped crashing in strategic view!!!(for now). It doesn't seem unthinkable that the increase in frame rate in this view causes unexpected problems and crashes. I'm going to test if the crash that occurs after x turns is also gone with VSync turned on.

I suggest everyone having this problem to enable VSync and report back. Be sure you don't VSync disabled through your hardware control panel like I normally have.

I know what I said is way too harsh but I'M PISSED

I appreciate the reply, devs. It's good to get some feedback, even if it isn't necessarily a solution. We understand that there's a lot to do.

In any case, I can also confirm that putting Vsync on DOES indeed stop the crashing. It's kind of a problematic workaround, since Vsync locks my framerate lower than I'd like it, and DX9 mode crashes ever 20 turns or so...

But a problematic solution is better than none.

    Thanks!

VSync for me: Switching it on had no effect. Forcing it with the driver control panel merely delayed the crash for longer.

This is also consistent across any number of reloads and games. Probably added another 30 seconds or so to the time until it crashes.

I always crash after around 25 turns of strategic view. Although, the very first time I used strategic view I crashed in the first 10 seconds when I tried to zoom in all the way, but I have not been able to reproduce that specific crash.

I have ATI Radeon HD 3200, and I play in DX9 mode. I just updated the drivers today, crash persits.

I've turned on V-Sync both in game and in Catalyst Control Center, but this has had no effect.

The game runs fine in normal view. What other info do I have to post to make this legit?

I like how they lied and swore I would be able to play the whole game in strategic mode.

Turning on Vsync did not work for me. Played for a few hours in normal view and it work fine. The min i even switch to the strategic view, the game will crash with 25 turns even if i'm not in strategic view. Also, if i switch to strategic view then back to normal and save, it will crash within 25 turns of me loading the save.

I guess this is not an important issue since we still have no response from support.

I'm pretty sure strategic view is just bugged. It crashed for me at random times, so I just stopped using it. It's something they'll need to patch.

I just had my first crash, not sure I would call it a CTD as I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Start Task Manager choice, because Alt-Tab was not switching: I was stuck on the strategic view screen.

Turn 268, Tutorial mode full game, and I had just researched the Tech. that reveals coal. I don't usually use the strategic view from turn-to-turn, but I do use it when looking for resources etc. So I was looking for Coal, and I'd configured the view's options to only show resources, and I was looking for maybe 15-20 seconds, when it froze.

[UPDATE] I just now loaded the autosave from turn 260 and ran it through to 267, the turn before I research the tech. that reveals coal, and went to the strategic view, and it crashed after like 40 seconds or something. I'd tried to crash it straight after loading the save game and I could not.....so not sure, but it doesn't appear related to the new resource possibly appearing on the map.

[UPDATE] Now I just crashed it straight from the turn 260 autosave game - sat it in strat. view for a while, didn't change a thing, then it froze when I started to mouseover icons.

VSync and High Detail Strategic View are both on (VSync always was from install, don't know why others have to turn it on...)

I also have a crash-minidump file: civilizationv_dx11_201080_crash_2010_9_27T15_37_58 C0.mdmp in my "D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v" folder. Any update on this? Anyone get it to work without crashing? Or, do we just assume that the strategic view will never work?

Same here. I have performance issues in normal 3d view (too low fps and unfortunatelly a bit unplayable), and constant crashes in strategic view... I have sometimes (with a lot of luck) 10-15 turns without crash, sometimes i cant play even one turn, but generally it's something like random crash every 5 turns (random places: my turn/ai turn, messing with layouts, in civilopedia, city screen, entering some menu, moving camera, scrolling or whatever else). This is ridiculous... 15 minutes of playing and then 10 minutes reloading. I can't imagine how someone could release such thing, because I just can't believe that 2K Games didn't know about this issue during tests...

one more thing. Generally speaking, crashes are less frequent (or even there are none of them) in first 50-100 turns. When the game starts getting interesting, it's crashing like hell.

Not that anyone really cares, but I also cant play in Strategic view despite loving it because as soon as i move around in it, it gives me a nice CTD...
