Same problem: freezes in DX9 or 11 - hangs computer and have to shutdown manually
This is supposed to run on machines at much lower specifications

I have the opposite problem - I can run it in DX11 just fine (apart from lazy texture application, not a single crash so far) - but if I try to run it in DX9 mode it locks my machine up. In fact, it has broken some other DX9 games. Since Civ 5 was designed to also work in DX9, is it possible it "updated" some DX9-specific DLLs and mucked things up?
Well I just found out, that the freezing disapperas after some minutes (varying from 2 up to 10!) and the game resumes as if it was never stuck.
Having other tasks open (like InternetExplorer) maximizes the chances of such freezings. If you get nervous and press some "normal" key-combos (e.g. <Alt>+<Tab>) then you bring the OS to give up and thsi leads to the OS stopping to respond anf finally bluescreening.
Windows 7 Ultimate 64, 8GB DDR3-RAM, nVidia GForce GTS460 (2GB-Version), Athlon II X6 1055T latest released and approved drivers (any system-part).
As Windows seems to have the idea, that the system is responding too slowly, it looks like some timing issues from within the game on a low level (near OS interface level). Once again: waiting for the game to resume "normal game speed" seems to be the best solution (always considering not to have any other task running besides CIV5).
Hey man, good looking out!
I know I've had other programs and PCs have slowdown or apparent freezes where it's just the PC processing the orders it was given, and in enough time it fixes itself.
Mind if I ask more specifics in terms of your gameplay? As in how often does this work? Most of the time, vs. all of the time? What size map/number of opponents/GFX settings?
The last part is especially important for me, since if you're having this issue with 8gigs and the X6 then me with my 3gigs and X2 gotta dumb down the graphics, big time.
Thanks again for pointing this out - it never even occurred to me to try and wait it out. I'll have to try next time I play.
@Wariat
I play huge maps, standard civs (12 AI and 24 townstates) tried World, islands and continents (did not try pangaea). But now I am stuck again in another way: after waiting the above mentioned time (and more - I waited for 20 mins today) I could switch taks without my computer crashing or bluescreening, just to find out, that Windows had encountered an error with Civ5 not reacting to th OS's requests thus having to kill the task. I just reached turn 275, so there seems to be a real problem with Civ5's memory handling. I just stick to other games for the time being, don't want to get to much in rage, when a wonderful game crashes and there are no more saves. I have encountered a problem with the autosaves, when a freeze happens in an autosave turn, then the aved game is a corrupt file (states Civ5)
Likewise, I got real excited and tried waiting it out. I'm probably being generous when I say I waited 5 minutes, but it was definitely more than 2 - still no go.
Yeah, I really, really enjoy Civ5. Just some of the bugs are killing me, I'm just waiting out for the new patches and things. I wish I knew for sure that this was a gfx card problem or what though, at least then I could blame the proper thing.
I waited for a good 10 mins and then my whole system locked up and crashed. It's one of the few times it happened.
First I confess to not reading every posting in this long thread. I have had this problem from the first time I installed the game from disc (and it continues after a re-installation of the downloaded version). The screen freezes up about 5 seconds into the game-- after the introduction. I have to turn off the computer to get it to reboot.
I am using Windows 7 and the videocard is Nvidia Getforce 6200. The driver is up to date. After installing, I updated DirectX to version 11. When I try to start the game with DirectX10 or 11 however, nothing at all happens-- the game doesn't try to start. I can start it up with DirectX 9 but with the freeze up. The installation on my laptop (Win 7 64-- the desktop is 32) has had no problems.
Please forgive me but I don't understand about 80% of what's written there. I am 64 years old and reasonably competent at simple computer issues but -- as I said-- I am utterly clueless as to what most of the numbers and names mentioned in the many posts are referring to.
Has there really been no response from Firaxis/2K to the many people who have this problem? Isn't there somebody who knows what they are willing to do to help?
Thanks.
Rick
I had the same problem with Dx11. System would not lockup exactly but i would get memory errors etc under windows 7. New driver doesn't help the situation but after mucking around with the config files I may have come up with a possible solution... Under "My Documents/My Games/Civ5" look for file "Graphicssettingsdx11" Go down to "EnableDOF" change from 1 to 0. I suspected this after having similar problems with Empire Total War/Napolean Total War. Depth of Field really don't agree with my tri sli 260GTX rig, except for in World in Conflict where DOF works well. Games runs flawlessly now. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the suggestion. In both "Graphicssettingsdx11" and "Graphicssettingsdx9" (my freezeup is in 9-- 11 doesn't work at all) Enable DOF is already 0. Think I should try and change it to 1? From you description we might not have been having the same problem anyway. Rick
I'm pretty much sure that your card does not support dx10. So it might be worth going into the "Graphicssettingsdx9" file and changing each setting too as low as possible. Copy the file before you make any changes though so you can go back if needed. Although i'm pretty sure that if you delete the file, the game will build a new file when it starts up. The settings themselves are pretty much self-explanatory inside the file. I would not advise changing enabledof to 1, as its an advanced graphics feature which adds stress to your card.
I would also recommend disabling the intro movie. Go into "Usersettings" file in the same folder. Change "Skipintrovideo" from 0 to 1.

Thanks again for your very clear suggestions. I'm away now but will try them tomorrow and report back. Rick
I just recentlany got a dell xps 15 with nvidia geforce gt 420m plus intel integrated graphics and it uses optimus to switch between them to conserve power when not grphically intensive. I ran civ on dx 10/11 and it worked but very slow and I suspected it was running on the integrated graphics. I had the idea to turn off optimus and run it on the nvidia card constantly but when I do so running on dx 10/11 the game won't even start it says "civ 5 has stopped working". and closes the program. running on dx 9 works perfectly.
Firstcohort,
I may have been a bit overoptimistic that I would be able to decide what exactly was making things "lower". Should I change all 1 or 2's to 0's? How about these numbers?
; Terrain Page in Rate
Terrain64Chunks = 2048
; Terrain Page in Rate
Terrain128Chunks = 256
; Terrain Page in Rate
Terrain256Chunks = 128
; Terrain Page in Rate
Terrain512Chunks = 64
Should I just cut them in half? Sorry to be so dense.
I Notice this with another Dell Brand Alienware M17x R1. You can switch to geforce 9400 after being in Crossfire mode in Geforce or Ati in sli or crossfire mode.. But would not let you switch back so you have to reboot. One suggestion. If you can go into Bios and disable onboard grapics and see if it helps you any. If not Contact Dell. Or you can try http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell/ Ask for suggestions.
I wouldn't mess with those features. Just the switches ( a value of 1 or 0, 1 being on, 0 being off), or settings (3 being highest, being lowest). For example start with just lowering the graphics quality.
Under [LeaderheadSettings] change too:
; Leader quality bracket
LeaderQuality = 1
Under [GraphicsDetailSettings] change too:
HDStrategicView = 0
Overlaylevel = 1
Shadowlevel = 1
FOWlevel = 1
TerrainDetaillevel = 1
TerrainTesslevel = 1
TerrainshadowQuality = 1
Terrainwaterquality = 1
Under ";Use more advanced GPU features which can cause some drivers to crash"
Change "TerrainUseAdvancedGPU" too 0.
Under [UserSettings] Change
"MSAASamples" too 0.
Most of these settings are available ingame. But if you can't get to the menu screen then this may be worth a shot.
I would like to remind you however, I am no expert. Just a guy who found that I got memory errors when loading leaderheads (in directx 10/11), and by turning off "enabledof" have solved this problem, and thought I would share this with people who might have similar problems. Your specific problem is not related to the OP, thus this solution may not work for you.
I have the same problem; Windows 7 64 bit. It seems like a like of people in thsi thread are running Windows 7 64 bit and having problems.
Not sure about Other Systems. Or Other Grapics Cards. But I had dual 4870s on my laptop I installed Systems factory Ati Drivers frist then installed Ati 10.3 drivers Which are older then the 10.10 or 10.11. But I can run this game in Crossfire Mode
My August Sirs,
I want my money back.
I did not buy a "subscription" I bought a DVD in a fancy case from a retail store. It does not work for my graphics display (see all eleven pages of this thread). The Steam interface is awful, obtrusive, and obviously not necessary to run a game like this (see Civ-4). Steam sux (counter intuitive I know). The one benefit to me of the Steam interface was suppose to be the “download fixes automatically”, anybody seen one? Just BS.
I want my money back. How do I get a refund?
I downloaded the driver update for my graphics card and installed it etc. I still can't load those saved games (or any above 200 turns say) in the DX10/11 version, although they work fine in the DX9 version.
Before they did the last auto-update of the game through Steam, this was all working great for me. Since then, it locks every damn turn. Why can't they roll the damn game bake an update or two??? They effed this game up with the last update. Whose damn throat can I choke for this???
Of course it is. Who said otherwise? Just as IE8 can emulate IE7 (so-called "compatibility mode") so ought 64 bit Windows to be able to emulate 32 bit Windows so that a game (or any other software) compiled as 32 bit will run smoothly. The first rule of correcting someone is to correct what they actually say, and not something you made up due to a careless reading of their post.
DX11 crashes on my rig, which has HD5870's in Crossfire. Draw rate on map is also very slow.
Was everyone having these lockup and crashin problems before the last auto-update through Steam???
Well the patch did not fix this issue. Curious though I had the same issue with World in Conflict. I am beginning to wonder if the problem is not related to Dx11 itself!
World in Conflict was only DX10 IIRC, unless there was updates. I only ever played the vanilla release and not fired it up since.
Likewise, I'm starting to wonder if it may just be my processor or mobo being outdated. I never had a problem with World in Conflict, even though I had to micromanage the graphics so it wouldn't die out. Never played it after I beat it.
I noticed one person mention that the new patch didn't do anything for the issue. Has anyone else tried DX11 after the patch and have their problems disappear? I'll give it a go probably sometime today, will reply with the results.
I am really disappointed, the patch did not help at all and the game still freezes.
I have just one question left. Where can I get support in German. I hope you recognize that you sell your game to non-english speaking countries as well.

Ich zweifele dass sehr viele Leute hier viel Deutsches sprechen.
Started up a new game today, DX10/11 mode and no crashes so far! I did have a loading crash just prior to the current game, same deal in terms of being able to click buttons but no response.
Playing a large map, 13 AIs, 24 city-states, Terra map. So far, so good. Also, the gameplay is smooth and loading seems normal. I'm still paranoid about a freeze happening but it hasn't, yet. Curious how it'll turn out when I hit the modern era, etc.
I'd say the patch fixed my issue, but I'm not 100% sure yet.
dont know if this has been suggested but here goes anyways.
i was havin similar issues with civ5 freezing up (and other games) while running dx10/11. im runnin win7 64 bit and have a geeforce 260 card. i was runnin the latest nvidia drivers so decided to use the previous drivers, same problem.
it was only when i installed the previous drivers to that (258.96 july) that the freezing problem has disappeared. give it a go.
Was just playing then and Civ5 froze on DX11 with 8800GTS. Funny thing was the game was still running, didn't get a not responding message or anything. It occurred just as the screen started to scroll to the current unit. Since the game was still running, I could right click on the map which I guess moved my warrior, and although the blue button still read PLEASE WAIT, I could click that and the mouse cursor changed to show it was work for about the duration of a turn. It would seem that just the current image in the window was frozen, but the game was still running normally underneath. I suspect if I could have told the game to redraw the screen, I could have resumed without issue. I couldn't find any way to do that though. Any windows opened over the game window just left a black area, as did dragging the game window outside the boundry of the screen.
DXDiag64 follows. Is it normal to have all those Deinterlace Caps entries? This was taken right after a forced close of the game I was playing with the freeze.
