Ok, so I took a look at my page file set up. I have 8gig of ram and was set up with a 8 gig page file. I have 2 raids set up for a total of 2t each. So I added another 8 gig page file on my second raid thinking if I had more swap space I might solve this problem. I loaded up the game and it went well for a while. And then it froze.

    Hello people

I´m a new member over here. And like many others, Im having simply major crashing issues with CIV5.

First, (playing with DX11 2xAA and all high details), when I started to play with it, the only problems was that I couldnt see opening video but game started and it run smoothly for sometimes.
First problems were that when getting "next turn" and it was giving me few sec "not responding".

Then when I reach somewhere year 2000 in the game, it just crashed. I tried to load a game, it let me do few moves and then in exact same point of map crashing. Many times and exact same place.

I changes to DX9, playing with only one monitor, not with eyefinity. First it worked like a dream, except drawing the land details came with small, a sec delay.
Now that I started to play again today, loading game and it crashed same way as it did before. In exact same part of the map after the certain unit movement.

I remember that when CIV4 was released, it had also major issues in start until the first major patch came out.

Well I try to reinstall the game.

    Here´s my comp:

AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE
    Noctua NH-U12P SE2
    Asus Crosshair IV Formula
    G.Skill 4GB (2x2GB) ECO DDR3 1600MHz
    2 X Sapphire Radeon 5870 Vapor-X OC
    Corsair HX850W
    Antec P193
    Windows 7 64bit
Intel 80GB X25-MG2 SSD & Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB SATAIII 64MB
    Eyefinity with 3 X LG W2442PA-BF 24"

Just wanted to chime in. I had posted my problem and dxdiag file earlier. I tried updating to the latest beta graphics drivers, and I'm sure steam has patched up my game by now, but it's still the same story. DirectX 9 is fine. DirectX 10/11 crashes after a single turn.

Can someone help with ANY suggestion, clue, etc?

@Draco, what you mean about using 10.1 instead of 10? It's some kind of specific known problem? There is any config/hack/edit we can try to look this?

    thanks
I have had the exact same results. With old card 8800 game crashed on directx10 and only worked on directx9. New card 460 game works great!

    Heating issues

I am starting to think this whole problem is related to temps. I have a water cooled system for both the video card and cpu. Last night I loaded the game thinking I'd get 100 turns in or so before freezing up. I only got 10 turns in. So I pulled up my system temps and noticed they were a bit hi. I popped open my case and found my water level was low. I added some coolant and was able to play again for a couple of hours.

    Just a thought anyway.

Mine are running at a fairly normal temp. But you may be on to part of a solution for some people.

When I play with dx11 my computer freezes when I exit to windows, dont have problems while playing though. This happens if I have played the game not when inside menus only. I have no problems with dx9 and had this problem since the latest patch.

    frustrating!!!!

Same problem here, just want to give a shout and keep the thread alive (in hope that 2K and/or Firaxis will actually do something about this). On my machine, the game actually worked better before the patch, I could play several turns before the game would freeze up in DX10/11, but after the patch I can barley play for few mins. The DX9 works fine so far, I got up to 150 turns without crash in DX9.
My machine is nothing too fancy, but meets recommended specs: Core2Quad, 8gig RAM, 8800GTX. I run Win7, latest drivers, dxdiag says I got DX11 installed (I reinstalled it too). I doubt the game is eating up all my resources since even in DX10/11 mode the games runs smoothly, no chopping, delays or anything, landscape looks great and animations run without glitch… but once it freezes there is no way back. In DX9 the games looks crappy and terrain features have small delay before they show up! I do not see this delay in DX10/11 mode. Even though it is choppy and ugly in DX9, game does not freeze, at least not yet. Also I did notice that once it freezes the game keeps playing in the background. I could even exit the game back to the windows without force quitting it, just by blindly pointing the mouse to the correct locations on screen leading it to exit the game directly to windows. I somehow think this is related to gpu… most of people posting here have 8800gpu?! Maybe I am wrong but I am thinking of replacing my gpu (it is few years old anyways).
It sucks that this problems has been talked about for over a month now and that it hasn’t been investigated or addressed by the developer!??!!! Where are they! Are they aware of the issue or they just choose to ignore it… come on they even put out a major patch and they did not fix the issue!!!!

  12. #372
Come on Devs, I've completely stopped playing the game because of all the problems. All my buddies who were able to play the game on DX10/11 and then loaded up DX9 say it looks like crap.

I want to be able to play this game the way my computer spec's say I should be able to play this game!! On medium-high DX10/11.

    Fix this damn game yesterday.

if you are playing dx9 because dx11 has some problem try putting all graphics settings into high..i did that because I m forced to use dx9(see post above) and at least it is pretty close to dx11 except the annoying delay

  14. #374
What delay are you talking about - just out of curiosity.

I'm stuck on DX9 and and it's not so bad, but man. It's kind of a bummer not to be able to hit up DX10/11, it's like a bazillion times prettier.

I think he means the delay from loading the terrain features when playing in DX9. This happens to me too in DX9 but not in DX10/11. Every other time or so when you pan/zoom the map there is a small delay before all the features of terrain show up, the terrain base is there but forest, river, resource, etc load up in front of you. In DX10/11 everything is so nice and smooth, no delays.... except that the whole game freezes up and crashes in no time! I am not sure if this delay is a common problem to all who can play in DX9?! Let us know!

    hi one question:

it plays all the huge maps?
So the last two settings of the card size, the skin apparently not listening.

I noticed that almost all the cards in the last two settings of the card sizes are played and opponents with many crashes. or the processor might be the DX10/11 is not due to the need something else.

because I'm where I are the last two cards no bigger game to crash was not much more pictures. and I only play DX 10/11 Civ 5

Sorry for the bad English that makes Google translate

Just to let anyone who is actually taking note of this problem; It does also affect ATI gpus as well. Im running two 4580s in crossfire, and cannot play dx 10 or 11 without a CTD. Works fine in Dx 9 but I would still rather play in Dx 10 or 11.

Anyone catch any news about this? It seems like an issue in terms of the Directx 10.1 thing, but I can't really find anything new.

I am wondering if the directx 10/11 crashing at the start and Directx 9 crash Later in the game (200 turns to 600) on Large and huge maps

I really dont think grapics cards would overheat in 5 turns. If the Fans are working it should take 20+ or more Mins for the cards to overheat. Even water cooled systems It should take some time.

The only system I see overheat in 5 mins or less was one of my Laptop Loading into a game. Due to a faulty fan Censer. It would not turn on when you frist boot up. Or while reading the webpage it would take 15 Mins. Then shut off.

    Temps would be at 100c

Hi, civ 5 freezes and crash windows

The map is huge and the game turn is the 650. I tried to start a new game, but it seems that the problem is always repeated when the game is quite advanced. Even in the previous game, the game tended to crash towards the end, around the turn 500.
In both matches the crash occurs when the camera moves on a map or to give orders to units or to give new orders to the list of construction of the city.
It seems to me that the problem arises when the game is quite heavy for the graphic level. Besides, when the camera moves, I notice that some textures as camps, towns or improvements are carried in a section of the map are not present. I see cities, camps and improvements over the sea, and when I move the mouse cursor on the edge of the map below I bring these textures.

    My computer is:

    Possible Solution

Hey, so I had this same problem and I think I managed to fix it.

When I would try to load the DirectX 10/11, my screen would go white and the game wouldn't respond. When playing DirectX 9, i had some issues with the icons doubling, but the game would run.

So in the initial startup screen where it asks if you want to start it up in DirectX 9, etc, I right clicked on the DirectX 10/11 and had it create a Civ V DirectX 11 shortcut and it happened to work. Try it out

You have no issues or crashes with Directx10/11 anymore? Also, what's your video card?

I hadn't played the game in several weeks, as I was sick and tired of it freezing up, so I put it out of my mind, and just checked back in this week. To my delight i noticed a new patch had been released, as well as a new driver from nvidia. I loaded both and jumped into a DX10/11 game.

Praise Jesus...I got past 5 turns! Fixed! Or so I thought...70 turns in the game seized up again. Same old ☺☺☺☺. Sounds work, but graphics are stuck. Ctl-Alt/Del to end program. WTF people? This is beyond absurd at this point.

If I try to reload my autosave I get all of one turn before it freezes up. It's NOT an overheating issue.

VERY frustrating to say the least.
Spiff, i BELIEVE that particular 8800 is going to fall on the low end, below the minimum of 7900GS.

Even it is benchmarks above the 7900GS, im not sure it will by much.

Seeing as it is a DX10 Hardware card, and not 10.1, my reccomendations, would be to run the game in DX9, on the lowest possible settings, to see if any issues persist

Interestingly enough, my game runs smoothishly. Although there are a few hiccups and weird triangles and crap that show up in dx10/11 mode, I can still play, and DX9 mode is even smoother. The funny thing is that I'm using my laptop's 8400GM, which is a pretty basic workstation card, so I guess I'm lucky. Too bad I don't get nice looking fog of war of DX9, but it's worth the smoothness of the gameplay.
Also I have update 2 installed and all my video settings are on low.

It seems to load, but it's still been buggy. I have completed games on standard maps, but had crash issues with larger maps. I've had one crash in a standard sized game that I was able to continue playing. Also, alt-tabbing out tends to crash the game where it freezes and the picture freezes, but I can move the map so that it looks like i'm on acid or something. Before it had been crashing on start up, but now I can at least run Directx11. I have an Intel Core2 Duo 2.00GHz. It's still buggy, but if I want to play larger maps, ill just go back to buggy directx 9 (had visual problems like messed up icons and resource counters)

Purchased Civ5 3 days ago (first time player here) and am having problems getting the game to run using DirectX 11.

    My system specs are:
    Windows 7 x64
    Asus Rampage Extreme III | Intel i7 920 | 6GB Corsair Dominator | 2x Asus 5870 Crossfire | OCZ RevoDrive 120GB | OCZ Vertex 2 120GB |

    Here are some screen shots:

    http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/2647/88079735.jpg

Thus far I have updated DirectX 11 runtime executable dated June 2010. Closed background applications. Updated drivers right across the board from Videocard, chipset, and so on.

I tried DX9 as others have, it does work, but afterward, it crashes my system.

    Freezes

I am having the same "freeze" problem that many others are having with Civ5. I have a Nvidia 8800M GTX board and run Vista Ultimate 64. I use DX9.

You shoud know that Nvidia has a very recent update for this board (Build 260.99 or 290.99?). Also, Civ5 is now on their compatability list for this board. The program crashes just as frequently even when you chose Civ5 as the default settings and, I did not notice any of the board settings that were different than before the update. Anti-aliasing is off and all other setting are at set at minimum. I don't think this board is as good as I thought it was when I bought it a couple years ago.

My reaction- I'm 73 years old and I love to play Civ1, Second Front, and the original Dungeon Siege, etc. and at this point in my life, I don't think I will live long enough to complete one Civ5 game. Saving a game six times during one turn and restarting the frozen game about every two turns is not my "cup of tea".

I also see so many things that I would consider "inefficient". For example, when a unit is moved and others adjacent to it are waiting to be moved, the program jumps to the other side of the world to process the next unit. I think this transition is where the display board chokes and freezes on the massive amount of data. I took note of this many times. A possible fix would be to display only two (or very few) screens- the "moved unit" screen and the "next unit to be moved" screen. It sounds to me that this might be easy to do (or try)

One more "gripe". In the '80's, I had a very successful hardware/software company with about 1000 customers around the world. If I had had as many customers complaining about this problem as I see on these forums, I would have dropped everything else and fixed it.

However, I do recognize the tremendous complexity and magnitude of this project and the never ending pressure to convert massive development expense into real sales. Sometimes though, this happens a little early.

I do love the game but it's not yet ready for prime time. I must wait a bit. I'll keep an eye on the forums until this program is usable.

    Thanks for your shoulders!!

I freakin give up on this topic.

It's turned into a "let's throw all the graphics related CRASHES we have into one topic" instead of focusing on the dx10/11 lockups.

So annoying, but it doesn't look like anyone knows how to read the first few pages of a topic anymore.

In DX10/11 everything is so nice and smooth, no delays.... except that the whole game freezes up and crashes in no time! I am not sure if this delay is a common problem to all who can play in DX9?! Let us know!
I have this delay even in dx11.
I don't know if my card supports it or just simulates it through dx9.
I have an NVidia 8600M GS (M = for notebooks). I have some latest drivers (for this particular card) but not exactly the official ones. I have some tweaked drivers i found. Without them most modern games showed crappy on my pc.

    me too

Same problem but in both dx 10/11 and 9: I freeze, sometimes instantly but very rarely am able to play some 40 turns before it happens. Really frustrating because I love CIV and I want to play, but it is impossible as long as this problem persists.

    Freeze

My games freezes randomly. Some times after 2 games some times after 10 sec in a game. The music sometimes goes one, while i can ctrl+alt+delete and stop the job. Other times the music stops aswell, but i can still do the ctrl+alt+delete.

    Me too

We're several patches in - as far as I can understand - and the game is still unusable in DX11.
    Win7 x64, 8GB RAM, Q6600, GTX 470.
Large map, starts crashing when panning after ~400 turns.

I posted my DXDIAG 5 days ago and nothing?

    Not a single reply?

What the hell is going on here?

Can we have an update? Is it a case of you don't actually know WTH is going on? so we must assume you're going to ignore us until we give up and disappear? Is this it?

10 pages of people with DirectX issues and no official reply? Can we have someone, anyone who will speak up for 2KGames and inform their paying customers WTH is going on?

Or do I just uninstall, throw the game in the bin, tell my friends on Facebook not to bother with anything released by 2KGames and go back to playing something that actually works?

$99.95 I paid for this game, I have the receipt if you'd like proof. A game advertised to run in splendid DX11 for an awesome gaming experience. Yet I press play with DX11 and I'm met with a crash?

But oh, it must be MY PC! I need to run MemTest to check if my RAM is faulty. Have I tried Prime95 to see if my CPU is running ok. I need the latest DirectX runtime executable. Oh I need to update my videocard drivers. Oh I need to reinstall Steam. Have I updated my BIOS? Should I wear a bra on my head before I press the games .exe? maybe that will help?

I'll tell you what will help ....

INFORMATION! You know, an update, and post explaining to everyone concerned whats going on, what's being done. Does anyone at 2KGames know? Does anyone at 2KGames even give a damn?

    1. You have a problem this thread wasn't even about.

    2. Calm down, do some research, and realize that any pc game you have an issue with, you'll be told to try those things first.

    Burgington,

2K doesn't read this thread. They know what the problem is, and they can't fix it. The problem is (mostly) that they set the minimum spec too low. People with cards near the low end of the minimum spec simply cannot run the game in dx10/11 and barely in dx9. They did this to get suckers (like me) to buy the game. If they had said "minimum card nvidia 460 or higher" they would have had 1/10th the sales and eliminated a great number of complaints. They gambled that we (the suckers) will just peter out over time.

You have a different problem. You have plenty of video power. Tagging your problem into this thread is asking it to be doa. Make a new thread and maybe you will get noticed.

I was using 2 8800 GTS nvidia cards in SLI and had no trouble with the game. I upgraded to Radeon HD 6870's in Crossfire and haven't been able to play the game since. I've performed the many suggested changes to the game setup as found on the Steam Forums but the game still goes to grey screen after playing the intro part way through. Very disappointing as I love the game. As per the above comment about low end cards, it doesn't wash. I'm using Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit, Radeon HD 6870 cards, 8 Gigs of ram, a new Asus P7P55D-E Pro motherboard, Intel i7 860 processor @ 2.8 GHZ. As I mentioned above, I can't get beyond part of the intro before losing the screen in either DX10/11 or DX9.

I'm guessing the 8800 GTS's were both 512MB? I use just one and am getting issues.

Looking over the thread however, it may just be my specs. I thought it was a card issue.
