Yeah, I don't think it matters what DX version you have. I run DX9 (it even says it on the window, so I'm sure), and I still get the crash. I'm running a Radeon HD 4770, with Windows XP SP3, with an AMD Phenom II x3 Processor (2.8 ghz), along with 3 gb of ram.

The best way I've found to deal with it right now is to run it in windowed mode so you don't have to shut down your comp each time it crashes. (My Docs, My Games, Civ V, Config.ini, search for 'fullscreen' and set the var to 0, if you can't do it in the in game options menu).

I've narrowed it down to one of my TSRs. So far I turned back on Antivirus and still haven't frozen again. I'm guessing it might be my Belkin Router Monitor cause I just got the router two days ago.

It was actually Fraps causing the issue. I had no problems with Civ V and Fraps before the patch.

It occurred just as the screen started to scroll to the current unit. Since the game was still running, I could right click on the map which I guess moved my warrior, and although the blue button still read PLEASE WAIT, I could click that and the mouse cursor changed to show it was work for about the duration of a turn. It would seem that just the current image in the window was frozen, but the game was still running normally underneath. I suspect if I could have told the game to redraw the screen, I could have resumed without issue. I couldn't find any way to do that though. Any windows opened over the game window just left a black area, as did dragging the game window outside the boundry of the screen.
OH WOW. SOMEBODY WITH A RELEVANT POST! Haven't seen one of these in a few pages.

    Wed Patch seems to work!

So, I logged in today just to play a couple of turns and to my surprise, we had an update. I let it install, while I looked at some of the changes and I saw various patches to "rare crashes". So, I thought "Hmm...wonder if this problem is a rare crash problem." After the update loaded I ran the game and lo and behold.....over 1 hour of game play in dx11 for a late game (2000+ turn) and not a single freeze / lock up / crash! I ended the night not because of a freeze or lock up but because I had to go to bed....some of us need to work on Christmas Eve.... if this patch continues to work...it's the best christmass present I could have dreamed of! In fact, it is running faster and better then ever.... Thanks so much Firaxis!

Lol, yeah sorry about that. Maybe someone will see my post and start looking in new directions for a fix. Doesn't seem that the game is locking up, it just stops updating the display.

I started having a problem after the last major patch. Civ V opens in a window label something like Civ V (DX9). My issue with this is that I am unable to scroll on the map. The only way to move the map is to click on the world map in the lower right corner. Any ideas?

Question Game Quits after a Few Minutes in DirectX 11 Mode.

Well... It seems that I'm not alone. I can only go about 15 or 20 minutes, sometimes less, into a game and the video stops updating. Sound is playing. Makes noises when I use the mouse.

I'm running Win7 64 bit, my version of DirectX is 11. My video card is a GeForce 8800 GT with 2Gigs of memory. So wasssup??? I haven't tried DirectX 9 version as yet.

It seems that this is a major problem within the Civ5 community. Is anybody working on this hoser.

I get the same issue in both Dx10/11 and Dx9. As the other poster said, game freezes as the screen scrolls.

I had played through for hundreds of turns without a problem, but as I reached mid 700's this problem became an issue. I have pushed the game on though and am now somewhere in the 800's and the situation has become worse. The game freezes after only 3 to 5 turns.

I didn't have this problem before the patch. I updated my vid drivers after I saw this issue was going to be a problem.

First off, is anyone collecting the *.mdmp files that Civ 5 creates when it crashes? Today alone I had 8 crashes over the course of 12 hours. In terms of generating those files, today has been a banner production day!

For me, the game is crashing to the desktop with the "Civ 5 has stopped responding" error message. It seems to happen mostly with the screen moving about, either on my turn or during the processing of the AI's.

Who can I send these *.mdmp files to?

The deal seems to be that, since you all can play with Dx9, they think they can just coast with this issue until they have more to add.

My problem is that the game is crashing with BOTH Dx10/11 AND Dx9

HEY FIRAXIS! Please address this issue

... er, I reinstalled the game ... seems to be fine now - I wasn't having the same problem as others though, so this issue is still in stasis.

Yep.. no matter the DX... it crashes.. because it does not depend on the DX tech.. its a sync problem.. running a lower DX only lets the problem hide for a little longer... till you eventually get into a high complex game data.

Ok, running version 1.0.1.141 its the same.. DX9 or DX11... the only difference for now.. is that with DX9 i get 2GB of working RAM used for civ and freezes the game with no messages.... With DX11 and also in Windows 7 I get the message about an APPCRASH...

    Module Version: 1.0.1.141

all problems solved now, it was an issue with my Dell xps 15, for some reason this computer can't download drivers from Nvidia directly, must wait for dell to mod them and release them, problem is they are lazy and still haven't done it, luckily someone else did and explained how, I did it, everything seems to work peachy now. I'm wondering if anyone else here is using a dell, and if they might be a big part of the problem, they were for me.

Thumbs down problem with blank screen

Running with latest patch 161, I believe and latest NVIDIA drivers I get a blank screen running Direct X 11 version. Game plays great until a blank screen. Any help would be appreciated. This is very, very frustrating and only occurred after the last hotfix. My specs:
    Windows 7 64 bit
    EVGA X58 SLI Bios 77
    Intel Core 7 I920 2.67 MHZ Overclocked 2.85 GHZ

    Samsung Syncmaster 226BW
    NVidia 266.58 WHQL
    Intel chipset 9.1.2.1008
    PSU Corsair TX 850W

I'm getting the blank screen crash now too. I'm at 1605 AD on a large map. I hit next turn, everything goes blank, and the game just hangs until I shut it down.

I sent in a save to 2KGreg@2KGames.com at the beginning of January, where the game would crash frequently, but I could reload from an autosave and keeping going. Nobody ever responded to that email, but maybe that was addressed in the lastest fix. Sadly now I can't continue this game :/

I can't play Directx 10/11 either becuz it crashes after 10-15 minutes into the game. I can play on directx 9 for a little while, but I constantly have to save becuz it crashes from time to time.

After reading all of the above, I'd have thought these problems would be fixed. Loaded the game from disc, frequent freezes with DX11, less frequent but still all too frequent freezes with DX9. Freezing with MMO's (Vanguard, Rift) I understand, from time to time, but freezing with Civ? Don't know what they have done with this game, but I'll be damned if I can see why the following set up can't handle it:

Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 975 3.33GHz (Quad core)
    EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI
2x Crossfire Dual ATI HD5870 1 GB (XFX GD-587A-ZND9 XXX Edition)
    12GB DDR3 1600MHz
    1T Barracuda
    Win 7 64
    All drivers updated

it's probably your fault because you do not have proper cooling

Where to find logical responses? Anyone?

Logically, if nothing else locks up, and it's obvious that it's a video driver crashing as the video simply freezes while all other game processes continue, it's not the cooling.

  27. #467
    Thats not logical at all.

Heat can definitely cause the card to spit out a command that the driver cant interpret or use, resulting in a crash

  28. #468
just adding myself to the list of people getting these crashes in DX11 during late game play. this is pretty frustrating..... i wish 2k would give us a hint as to whether they have some clue about what's going on here and if they have a fix in the plan.

as a note, there's simply no chance whatsoever the DEVs didn't encounter these crashes while playing. not a chance. so a fix for this should have been high priority for some time now. this is pretty wacky behavior for such a huge company making such a high profile title.

my hardware for reference, but this isn't a hardware issue:
    Win7
    Core i7-2600K
    Asus p8p67 pro
4 GB Corsair pc1600 (bios selected to use correct speed)
    Sapphire AMD 6950

Middle aged lady gamer non-techy here, and I was delighted to come to the forums and see a sticky identifying my problem.

I can play on directx 9, but if I select the directx 10/11 option sometimes I get a blank screen, but usually I go into the game, with the pretty clouds, and maybe complete 3-10 turns before it freezes. Sometimes it freezes on the first turn.

I just read through this entire thread, and I cannot believe that so many months later, a solution has not been provided.

I also have an Nvidea, but it is not the 8800. It is the 9600M GT.

I am sad and frustrated. I've been a fan of this game since the original civ, and I have never had troubles playing the game.

For Nvidia users, try turning all shadow options down to min settings (off if available), and tesselation to minimums.

That has made things much better for me. (and let us know how it works for you)

I'm suspecting that something about Nvidia with shadows is... wonky. still.

    hello
Ok i got the same problem! i think. though my game crashes before it can freeze ;>. dx9 works good. however when i wanted to play dx10/11 it was greyed out. so i googled. found out i have to install all windows updates including service pack 2! did that. wasnt greyed out anymore.

so i tried to launch...> black screeen...> stopped working. not even intro or menu shows up!

and ya so i did .net update ati drivers all optional win updates. didnt help.
i got a steam version oh and i did verify integrity of game cache on steam. found 2 files didnt help. i skipped intro in settings. no change.

dx9 crashes before going to the menu when i tab while it loads. dx10 11 however stops working no matter if i do something or not while it is loading for the menu. disable intro didnt help. dx9 ---> black screen then menu. dx10---> black screen then app stopped working. the card is dx10.1 ready so the app should fall back automatic to 10.1 if 11 doesnt work. it just seems it crashes instead.
oh and i did!!! run the dxsetup in the game folder it installed some files. no change! still crash on startup.

i found out that the atidxx32.dll caused crashes in other games on dx10. older ones like crysis most of them got fixed in newer ati drivers so is mine a driver problem and i need to wait on a new ati driver?

For some odd reason I can't play the game in DX9. It works in DX 10/11 but since the last page the game will let me play for a random number of turns before crashing.

I'm also still getting weird graphic issues where units stay on the screen after i've moved to other parts of the map. It happens less often then before but still happening.

When playing in DX 10/11 game freezes up and continues freezing up after restart and reloading from autosave.
    No error messages.
I wish I could post a DxDiag report but I have yet to find out how to get such a report, if someone can link me to an howto?

    Problems starting DX 10 version

    Hello!

I just purchased an XPS 15 laptop with a n Nvidia 540M GPU. Whan I start the DX 10 version of the game, I crash during startup. The DX 9 version starts fine. I have added the game to my optimus setup, and even forced the optimus to be on at all times, to no effect. Is there any way to fix this?
