My problem pretty much exactly mirrors the OPer's I have an NVIDIA Geforce 8800, all the latest drivers (Even tried going with the latest beta with a clean install). I start my game, it runs fine for long enough for me to found a city and then locks up entirely. DirectX 9 works fine, but I'd really like to play with the pretty clouds and stuff.

    Here's the DirectX info:

OLD ATI driver cured my issues

I could not open game. Tried all sorts things. Got rid of newer updated ATI driver and went back to the 9/2009 driver and all is well with Civilization V

    I'm going to say again.

STOP POSTING PROBLEMS THAT ARE NOT RELATED TO THIS THREAD WE WILL ONLY YELL AT YOU.

This thread is for people who CAN run DX9 but CAN NOT run DX10/11. It's not even for people who don't have the option to click DX10/11 there is another thread for that.

I want to be able to look into this thread once a week and see how others with my same problem are doing. Not read life stories about how someone got to turn 783 in DX10/11 and then couldn't cancel a peace treaty, o and they claim to never have tried DX9.

Exclamation Admins Please Read - dump file, dxdiag + process mon log

Dev & Support, I'm experiencing the same crashes in DX 10/11 and have some logs to help you (see below). I've upgraded video cards to see if if that made any difference, it didn't. Went from nVidia GTX260 to ATI 5870, both with latest drivers and all the latest drivers I could find for my motherboard.

To help you and provide as much detail as possible please download the zip file linked below for your uses. If you need a copy of the latest save file please let me know.

    Contents:
    dxdiag.txt
    civilizationv_dx11_201159_crash_2010_10_10T19_52_2 7C0.mdmp
    Process Monitor Logs:
    Civ5_Logfile_10-10-10.CSV
    Civ5_Logfile_10-10-10.PML

    Link:
    <snip - no longer needed>

The crashing occurs at least every 20 turns, sometimes just 1 turn after re-opening the game either from auto-save (which I've now turned to every turn so I stop repeating my steps in game...) or from a manual save process.

Please help, I hope this information gives you something new to resolve this issue more quickly.

    -Digitized Chaos

Note: please let me know once you have the logs so I can toss the file from my server. Thanks!

    Please, listen to this guy,

There's also some of us who experience the DX10/11 lockup (after 10 mins of play or so) but also crash in DX9 (like me) almost as soon as it loads a map.

    Corrupted video driver

Ok, so here's a new one. The game now crashes when I play dx9. After playing for a considerable amount of time the other night it crashed and I gave up for the night. After exiting the game, everything seemed fine. I shut down and went to bed. Came back today started up and my video driver was corrupted. I had to reinstall.

Just out of curriosity, is everyone with this problem using a 64bit flavor of windows or the 32bit flavor?

    crash dx10/dx11

Hi, I've this problem too, with a quad core Q6300 and ATI HD3800, with Win7 64 bit.
No problem with DX9, but when I launch the game with DX10/11 it crashes randomly during the game, some times after 1 minute, other times after 20 minutes. Also demo crashed twice after about 40 turns.

Last ATI drivers, no problems with other videogames, even DX10/11 ones.
    MassEffect 1/2 is really fine.

The DX10/11 version of this game has bugs.

New thread reporting that the newest Nvidia beta graphics drivers do not fix the 8800 issue:

    http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94387

However, someone else posted on this thread to report that they have been using the normal (non-beta) Nvidia drivers and have not been having crashes.

Just to make sure, have we verified that the official, non-beta drivers still cause the graphics freeze? Most of us rushed to update to the beta drivers right away.

Lo everyone, i figured i'd also add that i'm using a 8800 GTX card, and get random crashes (sometimes right away, sometimes up to 40 minutes maybe) with Directx10/11, but no problems with crashing when using Dx9 - other games seem to work as intended however in Dx10

This btw is with the normal drivers, will experiment with the beta drivers in the coming days

Are those of you getting crashes in DX11 exhibiing high GPU temperatures?

If so it could be related to Nvidias well publiciesd heat cycling problem on G92 based chips (most 8xxx and 9xxx and some 2xx GPU's).

After a couple of years of heat cycling up and down their solder gets affected (probably due to cold flowing of solder in the original manufacturing) leading to heat based instability and intermittend freezing.

No doubt there is some truth to this. However, I've been running graphically intensive games on this system for several years with no problem at all. Plus, 2K has officially said on this thread that they are aware of an issue unique to the 8800 graphics card series and that they are "looking in to it". So this all makes me think it is something specific to Civ 5.

    Yup, just figured I'd ask.

The issue is that there are many problems that exhibit very similar symptoms, and I feel that we are - in many cases - mixing up and combining problem reports that don't belong together.

Definitely true. This thread should be focusing on the OP issue where user experiences a graphics freeze using the DX11.exe but music, UI, etc. is still responsive. The user does not experience a DX9 crash.

In other news, 2K has finally released info on the first major upcoming patch:

    http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94438

They mentioned fixing the red artifacting and the low-res textures, both problems I have when using the DX9 exe. They also refer to numerous crash fixes, here's to hoping one of them will resolve the issue of this thread!

Freeze on offical nvidia driver release

However, someone else posted on this thread to report that they have been using the normal (non-beta) Nvidia drivers and have not been having crashes.

Just to make sure, have we verified that the official, non-beta drivers still cause the graphics freeze? Most of us rushed to update to the beta drivers right away.
I can verify on my system that dx11 freezes with offical release driver and the beta driver

I'm not so sure about that. In my case I'm thinking both problems (DX11 Freeze and DX9 Crash) are related in some way.

And also confirming, my system (8800 GTX) also has the OP's problem:
DX9 works fine, DX10/11 causes image freezes with music / sound FX still working, and this happens within a minute of the game loading up, the video card doesn't get anywhere close to being too hot, as it doesn't have time to, so can we put the "heat" issue to bed...

I seem to have cured my freezing problems, not sure if there's a scientific explanation though

After the recent patch I reinstalled Direct X from the Civ DVD then started with low graphics options and gradually increased them as I encountered no problems and currently have tesselation at minimum but all others at high.

I'm now 1125 turns into a marathon game and have just had 3 incidences of a Win error which says "your GPU driver has failed to respond but has recovered".
Annoying but not game breaking as I nervously save immediately after any major manipulations

Needless to say turn processing takes a long time and I've had to coach myself to resist an extra click which I'm sure does cause issues on its own.

Worth giving this a try as it only takes a couple of minutes.

Should have mentioned I deleted all old saves and started a new one after reinstalling DX.

    Patch is coming!

Good news...awesome news, a patch is coming that will not only address crash problems but a whole host of other things to improve game play. Or so the article said when I clicked on the news item in steam.

The first 'major' patch cannot come too soon!
I am 350 turns into a Pangaea, Warlord game on a Large world. There are two main factions left, Me and the Romans and the final war to end all wars has already kicked off. . . Not sure exactly when it started to get really noticable but I am experiencing major 'lockups' / 'freezes'. Ending my turn now now means waits of over 1 minute while the computer does whatever it does, but during this time the whole thing is completely frozen (apart from the mouse cursor) not even a 'Please wait', it just freezes. So far at least it comes back -Eventually. This Also happens when I take cities and at other odd times. Of ALL the bugs / problems / issues I have found so far THIS is the back-breaker. I do hope this is fixed or at least majorly improved with this patch because otherwise this game is broken beyond redemption and I will move on to something else until it IS fixed.
To put this into perspective, I have a newish I5-750 quad core processor running at 2.67Mhz. I have to ask 'What the hell is this program doing that it can bring an I5 to it's knees?'.

It's been how long since release now? 3 weeks? Where the f*** is the fix for this? Are the developers all on vacation or something after this launch? There seems to be no tech support in the forums addressing this issue... no official communications even acknowledging the issue. I have the same issue (still after the ATI profile update) on 2x ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870s running the latest drivers.

I suggest we begin filing complains with the Better Business Bureau (2K falls under New York BBB jurisdiction). Type in "2k games" and you'll find them. This isn't just a bug... this is not receiving the product for which we paid for and as advertised. We can't even play the game as intended. Normal means of support have been exhausted. Maybe we'll draw some attention this way. The complaint will take about 10-15 minutes to file.

Multiple crashes in dx 9 10/11

I know everyone seems to be having issues and i wanted to post this to make sure that what im experiencing is similar or different and the admins make note.

When game loads in dx10/11 i get to the menue screen and it locks up on every attempt can not even get into game this way.

When playing dx 9 i can at some times enter a game or other times during the loading audio test for your race the game crashes. When it does go through it crashes at random times usually when i click the next turn and its processing this has happen on both a huge and large map sometime early sometimes late in a game.

Ive also noted that the trade pop video doesnt show at times only a text bubble to click on ( buggy interaction). Below is my dxdiag im not sure if anyone can "see" anything or offer any advice, I just cant wait for this patch because atm the game is simply unplayable with crashes every 10 or 15 mins ( in a good game). THank you

    Opstart problemen, software hangt

Werkt ook niet op mijn Alienware M15x
    Intel Core i5 CPU M540 @ 2.53 Ghz 2.53 Ghz

    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
    4Mb geheugen
    Direct X 11.0

I'm very disapointed this issue is still going on. I've not played for a few weeks hoping it would be fixed, but there's no mention of the issue in the latest patch notes (http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94438)

Has anyone heard any news on the issue?

    Patch notes:
    Multiple crash fixes.
While not mentioning this issue specifically, I would place a good wager on this issue being included in that...

I'd just hate to assume, only to find out whilst playing that it has yet to be fixed. I wish they'd address this more fully, as I still can not play the game.

The title of this thread is "DX10/11 graphics freeze, DX9 works ok", and most people report this indeed being the issue.

If you cannot play in DX9 then you have a different issue, which should go into a different thread to keep things focused. Here specifically you are asking for an adress to a problem it appears you do not share.

The patch notes says it will fix multiple crash issues. If you want specifics you would have to ask for something specific to your problem. Giving specific adresses to non-specific problems is kinda hard...

Don't need to be a dick, some people in this thread have mentioned both not working.

I have an 8800GTS, DX9 has an entirely different crash. We are experiencing the same problem, but more severely.

    nVidia beta driver update

I just played about 1.25 hours in dx 10/11 after installing the new beta drivers. I only experienced some minor artifacting. However, I had at most 4 cities and met 2 civs and 2 city states. I tried to load my 70+ city game that was crashing in dx9 on the release driver and it still crashed. So I'm thinking there is a combination problem of the game and video drivers.

    More on nVidia

Ok, after my previous crash I started up a new dx10/11 game. This time i was in Europe(last time was Canada), ran for 30 mins and not problem. Not even artifacting. looks like the 70+ city is a seperate issue.

Just installed the patch too. I can now start a game in DX10/11 mode and everything looks good. However, the game crashed in the same way after about 25 turns! An improvement but still no good. Anyone else get this?

Suffice to say my specs are like everyone else, Geforce 8800GTS (x2 but makes no difference if i disable SLI).
