Do you really think they are in need of more empirical data? Do you really? And if so, have you been following this thread? This is nothing but slipshod workmanship coupled with a smug, cavalier approach to customer support. I'm sorry, but throwing away $60 is not something that I feel comfortable doing - if nothing more than from a point of pride.
My system been running almost 6 days now all completely fine with hours upon hours of play in DirectX 10/11 mode since I updated my video drivers from Nvidia on my barely 4 month old MacBook Pro running Civilization on my partition drive with BootCamp running Windows 7.
Try and update your PC video card and see if you continue to have the same problems. All my problem were fixed with the game once my Nvidia video card drivers were updated. Game runs damn fine now. Try to update your video card see if that helps you all out as well.

I'm so happy for you.
If you will actually read what remains of the thread — even after a large number of posts were apparently administratively purged — you will see that people have done what you say to try. We have purchased video cards that meet or exceed the recommended specs. We have downloaded the newest drivers directly from the manufacturer and have installed them properly. (Yes, we uninstalled our old drivers first, etc.)
As has been explained in quite some detail, the lifetime of electrical circuity is directly tied to the ohms (the resistance) and the heat produced therefrom. So, play merrily along while you can. You are using up your card like someone running a hair dryer on high for hours and hours on end. Your fun will come to a grinding halt. And you will be lucky if the ambient heat does not damage other circuitry in your computer. I hope your graphics card is far away from your motherboard.
Meanwhile, your counterexample is absolutely useless. It does nothing to solve the problems we are having. Don't you think we want to play the game? Do you think we should play it when our GPU temp skyrockets to nearly the boiling point of water? Do you think we just have nothing better to do than post here, having bought the game and loaded it onto our system? Do you think we're making crap up?
What's the matter with you that you just disregard the plight other people are having while you are doing just fine? At least for a limited time.
Is it some sort of schadenfreude?

Hmm i got a radeon HD5800ish card and i cant run the game in DX9 (got bluescreen) :/, just wanted to try if it helps speed up the "ai-turns". Use win7 and i have no problems with DX11.
My game worked flawlessly until steam patched the game for me today. (havn't played for a few days). Now it won't let me play on DX10/11. DX9 just looks aweful and I can't be asked to play with that.
Whatever that patch was, it ruined the game launching for me.![]()
I would just like to know how I can boot up to a non-black screen (outside of safemode) ... seem completely hosed now for some reason.
People who are looking for help with an issue OTHER THAN:
"You can play in DX9 but can not play in DX10/11"
You have a 99% chance your question about some random issue will not get answered in this thread. I really question humanity when people can't follow a simple thread title. (And yeah I do feel that is a good judge on humanity as a whole =P )
I had the same problem today too. Windows wouldn't boot to the login screen, just a black screen. Fixed it by installing old (258) nvidia drivers. Was running the beta. And then reinstalled them. Can't help ya if your runnig Ati, sorry.
Haven't figured out why it happened yet...
Ok I have a slightly different issue.
1st time I played the pop up screen gave me the option to play using Directx10 or 11....I played without problems.
The next day I load up the game but the pop up will not let me select direct10 or 11. It only lets my choose direct x9
Even making a shortcut for 11 the game will not let me.
I have had no changes to the pc since it ran fine the 1st time on direct x10/11
How can I fix this one?
I agree with Boosthungry above, this thread is specifically focused on the issue where users experience a graphics freeze when using the DX11 .exe but not the DX9 .exe. When this freeze occurs, the game and UI are still active (and you can still use hotkeys and/or blind click the mouse) but the screen has stopped refreshing.
All other issues that aren't related to this aren't really the subject of this specific thread.
I have the exact same issue. I have an 8800gtx and I can only play for a few seconds before it freezes. I have the latest update that says it fixes freezing issues, but no luck for me. Is there a patch coming?
THANKS!
OK - I finally got through on the phone desk and spoke to someone who sounded like he might be able to help... (hoorah!)
First, he confirmed that on looking at the DXDIAG results, that my machine is definitely supposed to be able to run the game...
He recommended gathering some information from Windows Event Viewer, and since some of the posters here seem interested in helpilng with the diagnostics, perhaps you'd like to post your event data in... personally, I don't normally get a Windows error when I get the DX10 hang... the screen just locks, but on one occasion I got an error, the text of which follows.
After a crash immediately go to control panel>administrative tools>event viewer. Click on windows logs then on application. There should be an error listed to the right. right click on it and choose copy as text then you can paste it into a post... would be interested to see if other NVIDIA card users are getting similar errors?
Here's mine:

Thanks for clearing that up Greg! That makes me feel a lot better.
Now, how about a patch update...
Ok, so steam pushed out a new client update. I think that is what caused my crash. After applying and restarting steam I played for 20 mins and got the usual freeze. Here are the relevant error events:
First Crash
Steam update was not applied.

@psugrad1999: How long do you have to wait before this error gets generated in event viewer? When I get the freeze, it just sits there, and I've just killed off the application via Task Manager rather than wait... but if it eventually generates it, I'm happy to wait for it to do it to get the crash data, but how long does it take? (Or are the "stopped interacting" messages in a different place in Event Viewer?)
My specs are Q6600, 8800 ultra, 4gig ram, all other games are functioning fine, but this one.
DX10/11 mode, was playing the Chinese, crashed around turn 470, at a specific turn, everytime.
DX9 mode, the same occurs.
The crash at first was a still screen with sound still running that I can control-alt-del from, then sometimes it would just lock up, no sound, mouse cursor is stuck and I have to hard reset the computer. No overheating issue from the temperature gauges on my computer. All fans are working.
I am shelving the game and telling others not to buy it till these problems are really fixed. I have been a fanboy of the civ series since Civ 1 on the Amiga! I loved Civ 2, 3, 4 when they first appeared, whats wrong Firaxis with this newest version!!!!
(Need to fix the AI problems also before I can recommend this game to anyone. The AI is STUPID at war, I can destroy the AI with horsemans or other units so easily, even on deity mode!, on Civ 4 it took me ages to even be competitive at King mode!!, come on! even Civ Revolution was much more challenging than this piece of ****)
(I loved the idea of hexes instead squares and I like the non-stackable unit idea! Coming from a boardgame perspective. But I don't like any of the other "improvements" much! No religion or even the love-hate corporations? Nerf wonders that doesn't do much, no point being a builder since all the building costs are so expensive, you have to not only waste turns building the buildings but you have to keep paying for them forever!, the crappy AI means WAR is the dominating strategy, just subdue everyone and go for whatever win you want, no strategy in that at all...... I should not be able to defeat the computer on Deity on my first try!!!) Need to fix these things also! I am thusfar disappointed, but I am confident that you guys at firaxis will fix these problems.... I hope....)
Same problem here.
I play for 2-3 hours and the game goes black, I still have my mousepointer and the music plays.
Two 9800GTX in SLI, 6GB RAM, 3ghz core duo.
Have not tried the game in dx9 mode yet.
Well then, that's me silenced quite spectacularly. Hmph! :P
I've tried everything I can think of to rectify the DX11 graphics freeze but still no joy. The 'best' option, and I use the term loosely, is to play as much as I can with almost constant quicksaves and then reload the game when the inevitable graphics freeze happens. Unfortunately I don't have the DX9 option because that crashes even before the intro. movie comes up.
i had this problem but it seems to have gone away now, i can play for long periods without the game freeze, then image of inside the hut etc
I'm really hoping this gets fixed soon so I can play a game I bought TWO WEEKS AGO![]()
My problem is a little confusing, I downloaded and played the demo, I played on the dx10, dx11 option which was recommended and had no problems.
I then bought the game from steam and the dx9 option is recommended, the dx10 and dx11 option has some corrupted graphics, it has the script twice with one overwriting the other and cannot even select this option.
My card is a GTX470, one other note, I downloaded the demo from FilePlanet and it ran fine, it could be the Steam version has some corrupted files.
I bought my copy from Steam. It tells me DX10/11 is recommended, but the game refuses to load the DX10/11 mode. It ALWAYS loads DX9 mode, no matter how I make the game start. I have posted about this problem in several other topics. If I remove the DX9.exe from the folder (to desktop or wherever) the DX11 version WILL start, but as soon as the Steam box that tells me it is loading the game goes away, the DX11 version of the game just disappears off my task manager process list and nothing happens. I have a plenty fine graphics card (which I bought JUST for this game).
Here is the important parts of my DXdiag:

I have an older hp laptop with windows 7 64 installed. The laptop itself works ok, but it is old and barely supports windows 7. I had to get creative just to find the sound drivers. Anyway, hp no longer supports this laptop for drivers, but I thought what the heck, I should be able to run dx9. But that would be a big fat no. It won't even load in windowed mode. So this game (while it was promoted to run on more systems then ever) is either so buggy with the graphics or it is terribly graphics intensive and won't support anything but the newest hardware.
Has there been any word on the issue like the OP stated running civ5 on 8800 cards ? Also like said here http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91984 sent in a support ticket to official EU support but no word back yet , nothing.
Until now in the patch notes I always see "general crash fixes" and cross my fingers when loading a game , but nothing has helped so far. . Would be nice to be able to play before holiday season when I plan to update my graphics cards.![]()
After yesterdays patch to steam I am no longer able to play in DX11, the game feezes after 3d graphics loads, the error reported in dx11 dll module. That steam-civ V project is a pile of ....
I have the latest drivers for 8800gtx and I can't play direct x 10/11 either. get stuck right after loading a game. I emailed customer service Monday, but still had not gotten any response....
I was having the same issues as you all. After some tinkering, I turned off all the bells and whistles in Windows 7 and that did the trick. The game actually un-froze after I tabbed out and turned off the Windows 7 goodies. I was able to tab back into the game and *poof* we're all good.
Try this fix:
Start > right click on Computer > Properties > "Windows Experience Index" (next to "rating") > Adjust visual effects (left side of screen) > Adjust for best performance > Okay
Alternately, you can get to the menu through Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Performance Information and tools > etc.
Let me know how that works.
Seems reasonable that it's a Windows process mucking up Civilization, given all of the various computers and graphics cards we're looking at. Someone more motivated than myself might play turning on-and-off the different windows goodies in order to isolate the troublemaker. It's likely a process that exists in XP, Vista, and 7.
Good luck!

Just confirming that I get the same graphics freeze when windows effects are turned off.
Ok, so I got my first crash while using dx9. I'm over 700 turns, with about 100 cities or so. Windows error log reports the following, I hope it helps:

I'm having the same issue.
If I run the game in DX10/11, I can play for a few minutes without any problems whatsoever, and then out of nowhere (usually when I scroll across the page, but not only then, really any time out of nowhere) the game just freezes. I can hear the sounds, and I can even hear I can click things, but the graphics stay firmly in place. If I alt-tab out and back in, the screen goes black. I have to CTRL-ALT-DELETE my way out of the game.
If I run the game in DX9, it works fine.
But I don't like running it in DX9, because ironically WHILE the game actually runs in DX10/11, it runs BETTER than it does in DX9, until it suddenly crashes.
I have windows 7 64bit, 4gigs ram, and a GeForce 8800GTX, all updated drivers.
