I'm also getting same problems as people here, have a Nvidia 8800 GTX, works fine on directx11 for maybe 20 minutes, then all of a sudden will see a drop in FPS then it will hang

no problems in directx 9 though!

It worked for me, hope it does for you too.
That was one of the first things I tired, doesn't help me at all.

The only things that helped me for the freezing is the nvidia beta driver and running in a window. But it still freezes, just not as much. Can sometimes go 10-20 turns without freezing.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere before. But you know how you still hear the game and clicking sounds? Well i was curious one freeze...
So I hit esc, and started clicking around the middle of the screen, right about where, in the menu, the exit to windows selection is... and after a couple of clicky sounds...

    THE GAME EXITED TO WINDOWS!!
Just like if it was working normally. I have been able to repeat that now for a good 70-80% (if not more) of the freezes I have...

But it got me thinking. If I could exit the game during a freeze, maybe I could do more, maybe save?

So i tried... and it worked... quicksave anyway.

So now when the game freezes on me, I just hit F11, to quick save; esc, to open the menu; move my mouse to the center of the screen; click once to exit to windows; and once more to confirm. And then start the game again and load the quicksave, and play some more.

It doesn't help the freezing, but at least you wont lose any more progress, and I haven't noticed any difference in stability using the quicksaves (yet).

TL;DR - You can quicksave after a freeze and not lose any progress.

Maybe this will help the techs, maybe it wont.
Hopefully it will help someone, somewhere, enjoy the game a little more (though the game should just work).

This did not work for me.

BTW someone else mentioned about when Ctrl-Alt-Deleting you see a paused image of the game intro sitting there. I also have this same issue and it seems like a serious thing. There is no reason the intro movie should be saved in the background anywhere. Is the problem with intro movie causing issues with loading a game? The problem I speak of is not having control to skip the intro movie and then it skipping itself and giving you control to hit accept which brings you to the main menu. When my game freezes it shows me the intro movie again frozen at the point where it left off.

Ugh...me, too. For me, though, it let me play deep (modern era on marathon) into the game before crashing. Twice. Since then, it's been giving me a hard freeze either during the intro video or as soon as it dumps me into turn one of a fresh game.

I guess it's what people have been saying about non-DX10.1 cards. Mine's a 4870 with up to the minute drivers (thanks to steam, I was terrible about updating those!). I'm miles ahead of the other recommended specs (except that I'm still on Vista SP2 because I'm too lazy to go to all the effort involved in moving to seven without losing anything important). Any hope of 2k doing us right, or am I going to be playing this in DX9 until I get a new video card or Civ6 comes out?

  5. #205
...update...right after I posted, I launched the DX9 version...OMG, the graphics are nearly intolerable...and I got another hard freeze at turn one. Ugh. This is why it takes blizzard twelve years to release a sequel. I'm going to go play Starcraft.

    What's our Options

Everybody is frustrated with Civ5 and as far as I can see the recent patch did nothing to make things better. Its got to be chaos at 2K with a lot of bald headed people running around with what’s left of their hair in their hands. I think it is quite unfortunate that we are not getting more feedback from them at least keeping us abreast of what’s being done especially about the freezes. I for one am depressed about playing a game that people have spent so much time creating great graphics that can only be appreciated in DX10/11 and having to view them in a crippled DX9 mode. Perhaps the best options is to set it aside and go back to Civ4 or just not play until 2K sends us an email when they have fixed all the problems and ask us to return to enjoy the game as it was meant to be. I personally can't play one more game and have it freeze prematurely after hours of building a civilization because of some bizarre set of circumstances.

DX 9 works fine for me, but dx 10/11 freezes after 20 mins or so. When it does freeze, I also get the pause screen of the intro movie. I have reinstalled dx, I am now on the latest beta of the nvidia drivers for my gx8800 ultra. I have also disable the autosave, and the automatic wallpaper changer in windows. To no avail, it still crashes after 20 mins. I am really dissapointed, 2k has always put out top quality games....this one is just way to buggy and really upsetting.

I'll throw my name into the pile with the constant graphic freezing every 10 or less turns in my case. Unfortunately I can't even start DX9 mode because after selecting the option in the launcher it immediately crashes. There's no intro. movie, nothing, the application just errors and crashes out. One thing I'll note is that I too have a Geforce 8800 GTS and I'm running Windows 7.

    Same issue here:

    DxDiag.txt
    msinfo.txt

Get your act together and fix this! So many problems means heads must roll at the QA department. How can these bugs have been missed?!

We see the intro as well on the desktop it could be a poorly implmented video overlay player that uses GPU accelerated overlaid video playback but forgets to remove the player when the video is done for some reason. Two of our computers so far have the intro video randomly sitting on the desktop aswell as a strange artifacts in windowed mode with other windows sitting on top of Civ5.

Don't know if it's been mentioned be4 but two of my friends had the same problem with the game freezing in dx10 and both fixed it by installing physx drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9...13-driver.html). Try it if u have not, might work for u 2.

Posted previously in post 180 and 194. Civ 5 for me is working just perfectly now for 3 days now. In that time I've played well over 24hrs of random games and not a single problem since. Everything was fixed when I updated my video drivers from Nvidia on my fairly brand new MacBook Pro laptop. Cheers!

I have also noted that when doing a CTRl-ALT-DEL after the game freezes that there is the face of the old man at the begining of the opening video.

Well you posted about success with updating the regular video driver, but aren't the Physx drivers different? I haven't tried the link for the Physx Drivers posted but I will tonight

Adding myself to the list of the disaffected...

Same symptoms as most of you - first, and only game I've played locked up after Medieval age. Auto-saved game plays for one turn and locks up at almost precisely the same point every time.

Can also hear game sound-effects when click on the screen, but screen never responds.

Also noticed that when I alt-tab out of the application, the cursor stays the normal CIV5 cursor instead of the "normal" one when pointing at certain windows.

Killing the game through task-manager results in:

    GameOverlayUI.exe caused a software exception 0xc0000005 at address 0x70cae0c7

Running GeForce 8800 GTX card, Windows Vista, 64 bit.

Incidentally - has anyone bothered to go through "official" channels and report this to Tech support via email or phone?

I did, and have been told to:

    Reinstall Direct X 10 (didn't help)
Reinstall Net Framework 4 (didn't help)
    Reinstall Visual C++ (didn't help)
Go to Steam and delete all local files and reinstall the library (didn't help)
Send an email with the dxdiag to tech support and wait.

    I'm still waiting....

Anyone actually get a reply from them?

    Exclamation DX9 freezes too

I'd just like to add that I now have a savegame that freezes on DX9 too.

    System is Win7 X64
    Drivers/DX is up2date.

It's late but I still have to ask, did this thread just lose a massive amount of pages or am I confusing it with another thread?

    No... It was this thread.

A cynic would suggest that the fact that hundreds of users publicly discussing how the game fails to work as advertised would be very bad for sales... If the deletion was intentional it would be very shameful and I would think the tech press should be VERY interested.

For those of you who like me have not received any response or help from tech support, have you mentioned this on twitter or facebook? If a company can't even be bothered to admit a problem or won't communicate with it's users, it deserves all the bad publicity you can give it. Tell the world how rubbish this service is and perhaps they'll finally take notice of us!!!!!

    Well...

After several failed attempts at playing in DX10/11 and three successful DX9 games, the 8800GTX I've been using mysteriously died.

Just in case there was any doubt about Nvidia-specific problems... I replaced the dead card with an ATI 5870. Surprise, surprise. DX10/11 now works fine.

A cynic would indeed think that and it was my first reaction upon seeing the page count drop from 22 to six! Given that it was both helpful to see other users with a very similar problem and had a lot of system information from different people I can only think that they were removed to hide just how bad the problems are. If true it's a very, very bad move. If there's another reason I'd REALLY like to know what it is.

Anyone posting here has already had a bad experience and only want to be able to play what they've paid for and to delete that without a word of why it's being deleted is unacceptable to me. The problems haven't been fixed magically without anyone noticing so what is the reason mods? Why bother having a support forum if you're going to wipe out such a huge amount of information like that?

    Dyonas,
I might be wrong but maybe they are not interested in fixing the game? Who knows.

This reminds me of Gothic3 & Forsaken Gods. Gothic3 was finally patched into a playable state by the community(!) and its addon Forsaken Gods is a better alpha version up until today.

    Freeze

    DX10/11
Once in the game menu I can interact with the UI for about a 5-10 turns until the game freezes. The music still runs though and when I click on a menuitem, I can hear sound effects. Nothing happens on the screen and I have to use the Task Manager to exit. The Task Manages says Civilization V isn't responding.

The game also freezed after I started the game, got back to the menu and then started another game. The game then froze at the loading screen, with the narrator still speaking.

The DX9 version seems to work fine but the game crashed with an error message yesterday after a couple of hours playing. It was, however, the first time I tried my native resolution.

Reinstalled Windows 7 Professional yesterday morning, I have only installed windows updates through Windows Update + Steam and Civilization V

Guess I have to play the game in sucky graphics :/

    eh?!?!

Ok, so I couldn't play dx10/dx11 since it freeze all the time, I then decided to play dx9 until this is solved. I played 2 full games without a crash, but SUDDENLY yesterday I got a crash saying the program stopped responding. I thought, ok maybe it was just this time.

It shows it wasnt, now it crashes just as bad in dx9 too... all the time!!! It's not freezing, but it stops responding!! Already posted dxdiag but it's erased.

    Q6600 2.4 ghz
    3gb RAM
    nvidia 8800 GTX

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF... fix this! The game is COMPLETELY unplayable for me now!

We're looking at the 8800 issue now. Very strange that it is showing up most on this particular card. We'll keep everyone updated as we make progress.

Thank you! I'm fairly computer savvy so if you want any info / help doing the diagnostics, msg me... I'm here all weekend and have nothing else I'd rather do than get this working...

Hi there, thought I'd add my name to the list. Haven't read through the whole thread because that would take forever, but I have the same problem as a lot of people seem to: crashes very soon after the game starts in DX10/11 mode, and shows a still of the intro movie. DX9 is fine. I used the .ini to disable the intro movie, but it still crashes.

My specs are: Dell Studio 1747 - i7 quad core CPU, 4gb RAM, Win7 64bit and an Ati 4650.

Oh good I'm not crazy! I thought I had noticed a bunch of pages disappearing as well but no one said anything at first...

Just to remind, please: it ain't so great on the 8900GT either. Runs pretty danged hot.

Having gone through the experience of a fried graphics card before, I'm just not going to risk going through it again. It was a different kind of card, and a different situation... but same deal if I burn up this one. The downtime. (I use this computer for my work as well as for games; downtime can cost me money.) The hassle. The money for a new card — especially when I already have a pretty dang good one.

So no, I can't really play either unless I go in and out every few minutes. And I don't care to do that as well.

What is so difficult to understand, at least for me, is how the game went through a testing stage without a single report of overheating with a very popular series of video cards. It is so incredulous, in fact, that one is almost compelled to conclude that there were indeed such reports made, but the game was released despite them.

People who say that it cannot be the game causing crashes are comitting logical fallacies of the excluded middle. The game is causing crashes because it requires a Rolls-Royce graphics card with four fans on it running at 5,000 RPM to play. And (here's the middle that's being excluded) because of this demand from the game, people are crashing and burning up.

You need to up your recommended specs. Way up. Shame on someone for knowing about the problem after testing, and then deciding deliberately to mislead people into believing that they have what is required.

The liablity exposure of both Firaxis and 2K are unclear here. You really should put all else on hold and fix this issue before people become wise enough to seek their rightful remedies as a class of consumers. And you do know what I mean.

    Its not your systems

Too many top line systems crashing, game program is the issue. Firaxis needs to put some time into this and release it to all of use who dished out to purchase what should have been a functional game. Or refund the money to all the purchasers, Class action?

You're looking at the 8800 issue NOW?! Sounds like you're moving with a real sense of urgency there. This is a slap in our collective faces, and a b-slap at that. There is no way a gaffe of this magnitude made it through testing without any indications of problems. You simply chose to ignore it and hoped the fallout would be tolerable. This is so unprofessional. Way to take your customers for granted.

    - I'm Running Dual 8800 GTX cards and can't play for more than about 20 minutes without the game freezing. In one instance the crash was so bad my computer failed to recognize any video card at all after the crash.

I am running a 8800 GTS and have had the freezing issue and have posted about it before.

As an update I had played in DX10/11 for the first time since the recent patch last night and actually thought everything was fixed, but finally got the freeze after about 1.5 hours and a lot of turns.

You know guys, as much as I agree with a lot of these type of sentiments being voiced here, they really belong in another forum thread.

This thread should stay on topic of providing information on what appears to be a common problem across a lot of systems as well as proposed solutions and results.

The results are in. Only the solution is of any interest now.

I agree with you in principle but since there are 16 pages that disappeared which included many DXDiag texts, system information and other troubleshooting information I fail to see what voicing things elsewhere will achieve. The information they needed was removed for some reason, nothing was mentioned as to why it was removed and as a result it looks like a much less serious problem.

    Thumbs up Solution?

I'had the same problem with freezing the game after the main menu when gamed with Dx10/11 - but not with Dx9. I'playing CivV boxed on Win7 32-bit, GTX260 video with latest drivers, Intel CoreDuo E8400 and 3GB RAM.
I found the very simple and basic solution of the problem which at last in my case works perfectly .
With the administrator rights find the CivilizationV-DX11.exe file in the sid meier's civilization v folder, then right click on Properties and next on Compatilibily where you can find two boxes related to desktop video properties which sould be checked. Afterward I had no problems with playing to year 2050 even on 1680x1050 resolution and highest game video settings.
Hope that this can help in some of the cases reported on this thread.
PS I'm fanatic player of Civ series since Civ I, and I see that Civ V is the really great step in good direction especially as the game concept is concerned.

    @Greybeard:

I see several options - which are the ones you recommend ticking?:

    'Run in 256 colors'
    'Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution'
    'Disable visual themes'
    Disable desktop composition
Disable display scaling on high DPI settings

In my case I ticked these two:
    Disable visual themes
    Disable desktop composition
This still works, since then I didnt have any freezing of the game
