I managed to play 40 turns before locking up, which is considerably more than before. So they may be on the right track.

    XFX 5770...Same Issues

Same as the others. I can get the game to run in DX9, thoughit's a bit buggy (my units just teleport to the desired location, in-city changes don't happen until the next turn...), but the DX 10/11 locks up QUITE frequently. On a smaller note, I am running a dual-screen setup, and the side of the game screen that meets with the second allows for my cursor to move out at will, making it difficult to properly scroll the map.

    My System (Pertinent Data):

    AMD 955 Quad-Core at 3.2GHz
    XFX 5770 with driver 10.9
    8GB DDR3 Ram at 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24
    7200RPM, 1TB HDD
    1920x1080 Resolution

    And PLENTY of cooling.

    Here's the dxdiag info:

Thanks in advance for the help, guys. I'm sure you're all about as frustrated as we are about all of this. ^_^

All you guys who installed the Beta Drivers and it worked or didn't work - what are the rest of your specs? Do you have DX11 installed? I know that the 8xxx series doesn't support it, but DX11 is backwards compatible, so if you installed the beta drivers also install DX11 ( I have it set up this way on my machine). Works flawlessly for me. I just played a good solid four hours. No crashes, nothing.

Any my machine is two years old, so the newer machines it shoudl work with too.

Upgrading the the new drivers did not help me. I can now run in DX11 mode with all settings on low (not min) where as before the upgrade I had to have everything on min/low. But now I can't turn anything up past low or my game freezes as soon as I start my first turn just like before. Here's to hoping you guys can get this fixed fast.

*EDIT* I was just able to install a small update for directX off the Microsoft website which now allows me to play between 2-3 turns on medium-ish settings. Progress. But still not playable in DX11 mode.
Also, the game seems to work just fine on DX9 with all settings maxed. No difference in speed/lag over all low.

    maybe you can help me,

my desk is always stalling after 10 or 11 turns, even if i play with the lowest settings in directx9, if i run a diagnostic of my desk it says, that i can run at everything high on directx11, but even x9 doesn't work,

here are my stats, everything is up to date. Desk is only 1 month old.

If you didn't notice, this is stickied. That means they're looking into what's causing it.

    Just be patient.

I'm having the same issue with DX10/11 on a GTS 8800, using the latest certified drivers. I have the same problem with both the demo and the retail (steam) version of the game. It runs fine on DX9, but on DX10/11 it crashes after a few turns at best. I've tried turning off anti-aliasing to no avail.

    I can't even start the DirectX11-Exe.
It says it requires Service Pack 2 or greater.

    throwing my hat in

Im glad those with a 8800 gts have gotten theirs to work at all i have not. On dx11 i get the intro movie then the black screen but can still acess the steam overlay and have background music. Directx 9 i get the intro movie and then a ctd :-(. good times for me hopefully it will all be fixed soon.

    8800 Gts

I have 8800 GTS also. i can run the game in direct x 10 for about 10-15 turns.
The game crashes instantly in direct x 9. really frustrating because it looks like it will be a good game.

I really hope 8800 cards will be supported in the patch, i was under the impression i would be able to run this game. tried some of the fixes i saw in other threads, nothing makes a diffrence. I have noticed that if i do not interupt the intro video i get probably 5 more turns before a crash then I would otherwise.

My computer would either hit the BSOD or powers off. Have been running in DX11 mode (crashed 3 times, about 10 turns into the game). I am using ATI HD5870 (which supports DX11).

I searched for this and didn't find anything. What patch?

By the way I tried the beta drivers and I was able to play for about 15 turns straight, which is probably double what I had been able to do before. A little better but still ☺☺☺☺ty.

found a solution that worked for me.

Greetings all i found a solution that worked for me with the 8800 gts. I went into the usersetting.ini and changed the gamemode to windowed and it booted up fine. I think went into video options in the game and changed the video refresh option to 70 (it was set at 60) and turned back on full screen mode and can not play the game in the DX11 version....this fix was found from civfanatics. Hope this might help for others.

Did you try reinstalling DirectX11/installing DirectX11? Your card may not support it, but it is backwards compatible and sometimes there is a little bit of extra programming that your card may support which can help with performance when coupled with a certain driver.

Also, did you do a clean install of the driver?

    Unable to play on DX10-11

    Hi

    AMD phenom quadcore 2,81 GHz

    GF GTX 260

I have updated my driver and I can play on the DX9, but not on the DX10-11 setting even though I have 11 on my cpu. All I get is a black screen(with sound) that I cant get out of, and I have to reset my cpu

    Any ideas?

DX9 didn't work for me either. Both DX11 and DX9 runs would turn my computer off not long into the game (has happened 3 or 4 times now). Perhaps it is from overheating as some others have experienced. I have a fairly decent system, using HD 5870 and my computer is well ventilated and cooled.

I was really looking forward to some Civ 5 fun this weekend. O well. Things like this can happen. I just hope they can resolve the issue soon.

If your computer just shuts off, without any freezing or anything, that is normally a sign of overheating and shutting down to protect itself. Moreso, it could be either your video card OR your processor. I know that on my old laptop it was always my Processor, not my Video Card that was shutting me down from overheats.

Normally, driver and sofrware issues manifest themselves in slowdowns and crashes and the like.

*Nod* Thanks for your response. But look, only Civ 5 is causing my computer to shut down. Other applications and games don't.

By the way, I am running a workstation, not a laptop. Some posters from another thread have indicated that their graphics card's temp go up dramatically with Civ 5.

Anyway, I am troubleshooting it (gonna check the CPU too). Obviously, I hope Firaxis will have some fix for it soon (before Christmas would be nice )

I should have clarified, I have always been running in DirectX 10/11. You think I need to reinstall DirectX11?

Also what do you mean by a clean install?

Does anyone know anything about the patch that somebody mentioned a few posts up in this thread? Is that guy just talking out his ass?

Not true for me. In Dx9 mode, I just up the detail of the FoW and it turns normal just fine.

i have downloaded the newest beta driver from nvidia and it still does not work with my 8800gts. I was monitoring the graphics card temp and they were about normal. when the game freezes the CPU goes to between 95%- 100% of usage. as soon as i ctrl alt delete to task manager the cpu usage immidiatly drops down to 10% even though the game is technically still running. when the game freezes you can still click and hear noises but no images on screen change.

As I posted couple pages ago this did not help my 8800GTS. DxDiag there. Just so you guys don't think it's only an out dated driver issue.

  34. #114
Clean install means delete the previous driver before installing the new set. Sometimes installing a driver over a previous set of drivers can lead to issues.

The newest Beta driver available actually has this option built in. Just go to 'Custom install" and go to "clean install." The other driver downloads you have to do it manually.

    Lightbulb tried everything suggested

DX9 works fine but DX11 crashes when selecting DX10/DX11 Stream option

Used different resolutions, game cache, Stream is not using compatibility option , run as Admin, reinstall CIv v etc

    Win 7 64 bit
    E8600
    5850 w 10.9 drivers
    8Gb DDR3

Until they optimize the DX10/11 code, you'd probably be best sticking with DX9 if you have already tried all the fixes in this thread. Any other fixes that wil likely be brought up would likely be more in depth and unecessary, and you will likely have to change them back to get maximum quality once they fix the code. Just stick with DX9 mode for now if it is running good for you. It doesn't look that different. They know about the problem and they will fix it, but if you have tried everything until then there's really no choice =/.

    I have installed dx11.
My video card is ATI 5850 (never overlocked)
    Windows 7 32bit

latest video drivers, lates windows updates

every other game is running fine.

    Also i can play CIV5 in DX9... :-/

Has anyone allready a solution? I cantīt want to read all the 11 pages.

Beta Driver Seems to Work For Me

I installed the newest Nvidia beta driver last night and It seems to have fixed it for me. I played a few times with absolutely no freezes. Will have to continue to play to see for sure though but I played for quite a while with no issues.

For the record, I've got an 8800 GTX, Q6600 Quad Core, 3 GB RAM, Vista Ultimate 32bit.

Hopefully, this is resolved quickly for everyone

I installed the 260.63 drivers from Guru3D.com and they helped me out a ton.
There is no date on them, but they are dated Sept 9th 2010.
CPU is still pegged at 100% the entire game, and I believe the problem most people are having is an overheating issue.
Make sure you increase the fan speeds of both your Vid card AND your CPU.
