same thing here, game freezes in dx11
    i have a gtx470, win7 x64, i7 930 cpu, 6gb ram

when the game freezes the game mouse cursor turns into the windows white mouse cursor, but only in a small box area in the center of the game screen. weird. I was able to play a game for about 30 mins, but the crash happens every time now upon loading the game after about 5 turns.

    have not tried dx9 yet

Similar problems for me, but I can make it into the game for several turns, then it crashes for both Directx 9 & 10/11.

Hey all, same results as a lot of people, but wanted to throw my specs in the mix as well for consistency sake.

Game crashes within 10 minutes in DX10/11 (shows the program has stopped responding)

Seems to run fine in DX9, but to be honest have spent most of my attempts trying to fix the DX10/11 issues, so will play some more with DX9 just to be certain

    System specs are as follows:

    Windows 7 - 64bit
    I7-720QM
    4GB 1033 DDR3 ram
    ATI 4870X2 crossfire configuration (10.8)

And have tried various suggestions in this forum (and others) with the same results.

    Thanks!

    Hey guys,

I just wanted everyone to know that i have an 8800M GTS and DX10/11 works GREAT for me now. It sucked really really badly at first, but then I DLed the newest drivers for the 8800 GTX on the Nvidia website and the issues all went away. I can now run on everything High (amazingly, considering I have a 2 year old system) and it runs at roughly the same level as Civ IV.

However, I do still encounter random crashing when the gme loads after setting up a match. Unfortunately, it really is completely random so I'm not sure how to fix it.

Try installing the newest driver for any of the 8800 cards on the Nvidia site that is compatible and see if it helps you guys at all. It really helped me.

    EDIT: My Specs:

    Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 2.1GHZ
    Windows 7 64-bit
    4GB RAM
    8800M GTS

My system is crashing 10 minutes or so in regardless of what version of the game I use.

I am also using an 8800GT, and my DxDiag follows:

Just wanted to add my name to the pile. Hopefully someone @ 2K will do something about these issues.

I am also running 8800 GTS and I get freezes where the graphics lock up, but I can still create sounds by clicking on menus etc.

I have tried turning off the anti-aliasing and nothing changed.

This problem doesn't happen right away, but I would say at turn 50 of my first game I have not been able to play 10 consecutive turns without crashing.

There doesn't seem to be a clear in game event that cause this, though I think I notice it happening slightly more often as a result of a notification popping up.

Here are the rest of my PC stats:

Well, interestingly I should have tried this first. So for those users with ATI cards in a crossfire configuration. You may want to try disabling crossfire and see if it still locks up. So far I've been going about 45 minutes (far longer then ever before) after disabling crossfire and so far so good on DX10/11. I doubt it supports it anyway, but unfortunate that I have to disable it. But give it a try and see if it works.

Okay, I'm hopeful that I've got this fixed on my end.

I've been able to run a couple dozen turns in the Renaissance Era with no crashes on the DX10/DX11 executable with no freezes or crashes with all settings on 'Medium'. I'm going to try 'High' next and see what happens.

I'm not sure which exact setting has helped out here, but basically, what I've done is this:

Went to my nVidia control panel.
    Went to Manage 3D Settings
Added civilizationv_dx11.exe with the following settings:
    Anisotropic Filtering - 4x
    Antialiasing Transparency - Multisampling
Texture Filtering Anisotropic Sample Optimization Off
Texture Filtering Negative LOD Basis - Clamp
Texture Filtering Quality - High Quality
Texture Filtering Trilinear Optimization - On
    Threaded Optimization - On
    Vertical Sync - Force On

All the rest of the settings were left at my global settings default.

Again, I'm not certain which of these has helped out, but so far, so good...

We'll see what happens with everything turned all the way up...

Pleased to report that after 5 turns or so with all settings on 'High', Large map with 10 civs and 20 city states to start, no crashes

Bumping this up. I don't know if these boards are moderated, but it would be nice to see some of the larger threads with common issues stickied to the top of the forum so that there is some continuity.

nice! thanks for reporting it ErLoft, I did something similar with my 5850 + Ati Tray Tools and got it stable too, well until yesterday - didn't play it today *crossing fingers* yet, but I'm positive that I fixed mine too.

Going to link your solution at steam forums ( on that now very long thread of unfortunate people ) to see if helps someone!

However, nothing changes on the screen.

The DX9 version seems to work fine.

    I've got a 8800 GTS with the latest drivers, 258.96, and I'm running on Vista (32bit) SP2
I have the same video card and same problem. I'm running Win7 (32-bit). Before I updated my video card driver, I could play for awhile (up to an hour) and then the entire game would freeze up. No sounds, nothing. I had to hard quit the game from the task manager. Since updating to the latest driver I now have the same problem you describe. I played about six turns, and then the graphics totally froze. I could hear the sounds continue. Mouse clicks still click etc, but that's it.

At this point I plan on shelving the game for a week or two and await a MASSIVE game patch. Needless to say I don't appreciate paying $50 to do Firaxis/2K's beta testing for them. Utter BS.

    Another "me, too"

I'm playing in DX10/11 mode with a 8800GTX. The game ran fine up until around year 1500BC (115 turns or so). Now, it won't go more than a few turns without freezing. I'll try it it in DX9 mode to confirm that works OK.

EDIT: Yep, no more freezes in DX9 mode.

    same problem

    Hi Everyone/Devs,

Same problem here with an 9800GT/AMD64/4 gigs ram/win7 64-bit. When I try and run DX11 version from Steam it simply does nothing. Interestingly I put the Civ5DX11 shortcut on the desktop, and when I run that it gives the following error:

The program can't start because d3ddx11_42.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem
Unsure if that would be a seperate issue, or if it is tied in to the overall issue.

If the devs need my dxdiag just let me know, it's too giant to post here.

I'd just like to reiterate that users are having DX10/11 issues on cards other than the 8800 as well.

Unhappy Same problem as everyone else...

I am also having what seems to be the same issues as everyone else.

My setup is an 8800 GTX, Q6600 Quad Core, 3GB RAM, Windows Visa Ultimate. It worked absolutely fine up until around turn 30 - 50 (1500 BC'ish) on the games I've played thus far on DX10/11 and then the screen locks up. The game is still playing though as I can click menus and hear it. I have to alt-ctrl-del to hard quit the game. Everything is up to date in my machine, including the drivers. It works perfect on everything high until it freezes.

I've tried some of the solutions posted, including ERloft's in post #48. It still crashed after a few turns on a saved game.

Here's hoping the developers offer a solid fix for this soon as I didn't buy this game for $50 to play in DX9...

That is a good suggestion for those that haven't tried but does not fix the issue for many of us.

    8800's

I must say, the majority of the cards with this problem is 8800 cards. (I myself have 8800GTX) Already posted my DxDiag. This needs to be fixed!

  20. #60
A lot of the cards are 8800's, but that doesn't mean that the card is the issue.

It just means that the 8800 series is one of the most popular cards on the market (which it is).

The fact that more people are having issues with 8800's is most likely because more people have 8800's. Corellation doesn't equal Causation.

This issue goes well beyond a Card hick up.

While that may be true its at least a pattern that might help people understand and fix the issue. This needs to be stickied to the top, its one of about 5 major issues that are clearly very frequent. This one makes the game unplayable in its current build.

    System Specs: Win7 x64, Core i7 920, 12GB DDR3 RAM, 2x GTX460 SLI, 2.7TB HDD space - Running all latest drivers, DirextX, etc. @ 1920x1080 60Hz with Vsync on

    Two issues:
    1) The land textures do not appear to be loading properly.
When I load a game the low-res land textures are displayed (or not, sometimes the land is just patches of different solid colors). I have to scroll around the map several times to get the proper textures loaded. Basically as a space approaches the bottom edge of the screen it will usually load the proper texture. This occurs in both DX9 and DX11.

    2) The diplomatic screen (with the animated leader) is causing major problems in DX11! I can play the game fine for a while, but the second a leader wants to contact me the computer locks up. Both of my displays freeze completely, the sound either continues or stutters, and I have to switch the computer off. My G510 keyboard display freezes and the keys are nonresponsive.
I determined it was the diplomacy screen causing the problem through trial and error. I quick saved before pressing Next Turn in DX11. Eventually the game would crash. After reboot I would run in DX9 and a leader would contact me after I pressed Next Turn. I have replicated this multiple times under various graphics settings.

By the way, with the exception of the above issues, my system runs fine on any graphics settings. I would also comment that Fog of War is not the only difference between DX9 and DX11. The major difference I have noticed is that MSAA is not available under DX9. All of the units, cities, tile improvements, etc. look much better under DX11, at any zoom level.

Hope this gets patched soon... Great game otherwise.

DX10/11 crashes right after loading up the first turn. Though it works with ALL settings to lowest/minimum and vsync, AA, and high detail all off. Turn these up to all low (not min) and I can't even get half way through the first turn.

DX9 has no issues. 250+ turns into one game (knock on wood). Settings on mediumish.

I've been able to run a couple dozen turns in the Renaissance Era with no crashes on the DX10/DX11 executable with no freezes or crashes with all settings on 'Medium'. I'm going to try 'High' next and see what happens.

I'm not sure which exact setting has helped out here, but basically, what I've done is this:

Went to my nVidia control panel.
    Went to Manage 3D Settings
Added civilizationv_dx11.exe with the following settings:
    Anisotropic Filtering - 4x
    Antialiasing Transparency - Multisampling
Texture Filtering Anisotropic Sample Optimization Off
Texture Filtering Negative LOD Basis - Clamp
Texture Filtering Quality - High Quality
Texture Filtering Trilinear Optimization - On
    Threaded Optimization - On
    Vertical Sync - Force On

All the rest of the settings were left at my global settings default.

Again, I'm not certain which of these has helped out, but so far, so good...

We'll see what happens with everything turned all the way up...

Pleased to report that after 5 turns or so with all settings on 'High', Large map with 10 civs and 20 city states to start, no crashes
did not work for me. im having an issue loading ANY saved game and ontop of it, this crashing, making this game unplayable as i cant just load up a save file after the crash.

I don't mean to be harsh but your problem doesn't fit on this thread. Please keep the focus else it's better to have a guest book where you have to search a 16 miles page through ctrl+f (or clicking next page 40x).

From what you said your problems are:

    1) probably driver or directx files issue, did you try other drivers *and* to run DxSetup on your Civ 5 game folder? (still, not this issue)

    2) lots of threads about that here on 2k forums and steam Civ forums, but not this thread.

Please don't take this badly, just trying to keep the focus here.

Have any of you tried installing the newest Beta driver from Nvidia and seeing if that helps?

    same problem

Same problem as everyone else. Run the game on dx11/10, the game will crash a few turns in. If I run it on dx9 then the crash will happen every couple turns but it will recover and let me play until it happens again.

I am also interested to know if this has been tried. I imagine it probably has, but you never know.

Well I guess I might have to try installing the beta drivers when I get home then.

I hope it works for me too.

    Beta drivers worked for me

I loaded the beta nVidia drivers yesterday, and the game plays fine in DX10/11 now.

Where are these beta drivers? When I tell the NVIDIA site to check if my drivers need an update (using their ActiveX plugin), it shows the last release for my 8800 GS as from February 2009.

Why would they update them now? Is it incorrectly finding the wrong drivers? Please direct link and explain if possible, as I'm very confused.

I believe this would be what your looking for:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-wi...ta-driver.html

I haven't tried it yet myself, but this is the newest beta driver on nvidia's website.

You can just search on the website under download drivers for beta's.

I'm gonna try these drivers and see how it works out... but I saw people here having the same problem with ATI cards, anyway, we'll see

Here are the validation errors in case support reads this. I would send in an email but I still haven't received a response.

The beta drivers fixed it for me! Thank you very much. That was on my 8800M GS. Don't use NVIDIAS ActiveX auto driver checker, it returns BAD results!!! Thank you guys!!!

EDIT: Anti-aliasing just blacks out the screen though, oh well probably couldn't run it well enough with that anyway.

EDIT 2: Nevermind, still having problems, but it's better.
