Depends on your video card, what vid card to you use?
Also you can check through dxdiag

Nvidia geforce 8500 GT
That is a DX9 and DX10 card .. so theoretically you could run the game with both since the 'second' option is DX10/DX11. First option is DX9
But check your Dxdiag to make sure which version you have installed.
Start -> Run -> dxdiag
Under the system tab, the last line should read 'DirectX Version'

it says my comp has direct x 11 installled...but if my card isnt for 11 then what do i do? just run 9?
im guessing just run 9???
From what I can tell, your card DOES NOT support DX11.. Surprised you have DX11 installed..
This comes straight from Nvidia's website "Value-priced NVIDIA® SLI™-Ready GeForce® 8500 graphics processors are essential for accelerating the Microsoft® Windows Vista™ experience, powering Microsoft® DirectX® 9 and DirectX 10 games, and watching HD movies on a PC."
Again, I find it odd your version of DX says you have 11.. Either way, you should be able to run both versions of Civ5. Since like I said the second option is for both DX10 and DX11 cards.
