They said there will be a Mac version, but they won't say WHEN.
In the meantime, I'm running Windows XP on my Mac Xeon Quad Core with bootcamp. I'm installing Civ V today -- I'll let you know if it works.
Also, there is Crossover, which is a Mac program that lets you run Windows games. Go download the free version and see if it works with Civ V. That's cheaper than buying a copy of Windows. And it's not an emulator -- it adds specific functionality to run games. I've never used it, though.
All modern Macs uses Intel processors, so it runs Windows just fine. And Macs are all high end machines, so you won't run into all the problems people get with a demanding game like Civ and those cheap PCs. People say Macs are too expensive, but high end WIndows PCs cost just as much and are uglier to look at.
I also own 2 Windows PCs, BTW. I've built many of them and know both machines well.

I am currently donwloading the demo (I am located in Europe) on my iMac 27". I installed bootcamp and then Windows 7 Ultimate. Not the perfect solution, but looks like it's going to work. Will be able to confirm for sure in about 7 minutes (that's what it says on my stream download screen).

Mac OS-X runs on Intel hardware. Get yourself a Windows emulator and game to your heart's content.
Im as a big as apple user as they come, 2 macbook laptop pros, two iphones, and two ipads on our household, but even I know threads really dont make sense and get closed soon. We bought a cheap gaming computer to play pc games because i know besides a few exceptions like starcraft 2, most pc games if ever come to mac is always 8 to 12 months after release if its going to be released at all. Do a search and you'll see this thread has been started and closed already. Come on.. you guys are making apple owners look bad here.
I'll be buying Civ5 today and running it on Boot Camp, Win XP SP3, Quad core 2.66GHz Intel Xeon. Will post here saying how it goes.
Please keep this thread up so us Mac users can communicate (and buy more copies of Civ5!)
BTW, I had Windows XP installed on another computer, and with the Windows Activation scheme, I read it's only supposed to be used on one computer.
But I installed it on another computer (my Mac Quad) and then called Microsoft, and they activated the new one without question when I said I had upgraded. The woman said "Call back anytime and install it on as many computers as you need." No hassle and done in about 3 minutes.
???? That's awesome. Of course that's XP, they probably don't do that with Vista and Win7.
Basd on how clunky their software is, I was expecting lousy customer service from MS. I was happily surprised!
really, we are in 2010 a bunch of people have MACs and still they launch a huge game like this only for PC , as i can see this will never change .

i thinking to install windows xp or vista on mac macbook pro 13" c2d last model with the 320m 256mb , im not sure if it will work well for civ 5.
Graphics card is ATI RadeonX1900 512mb. It's "ok," and when I looked at the thread for system specs I think the laptop equivalent of that card was "between recommended and minimal." I expect it to run at recommended speed with the 4gb of ram.
I have played Warhammer Online and TF2 on Boot Camp and both have run absolutely fine. Starcraft 2 runs well on this ATI card as well. Games will run just as well on XP with Boot Camp as they would in Mac OS (and maybe even faster?) so I think it should be fine. I'm not sure about your particular card but I'll report how it goes with mine.

im dling the demo through my special pc steam, basically its in a wine wrapper i'll tell you how it goes and if it works ill post a link on here.

You do realize that a Mac running Windows is basically a PC right?
Crossover Games allows you to run Windows Games seamlessly in OS X would that work for you? (no nasty Windows installed on your Mac)
uh OS X is both better looking AND more powerful than Linux
When Civ IV Mac came out most Mac users were still with PPC which you must actually rewrite the entire game for it as opposed to Intel where they can just stick it in a wrapper like Cider and have it playable in under 100 man hours (that's how much it take for the Porting Team who are simply doing a labor of love). Also with Cider it means as long as the mod installation method is drag and drop or available through Steam Mac Users can use mods designed on Windows even if it uses C++
civ_king are you sure civ 5 will run under crossover ?
If by a bunch, you mean about 5 to 10 percent of the overall PC population. Significant, yes, but traditionally, Macs have been in graphics shops and classrooms, not in gamers' houses. So the money's not there for developers -- there's little incentive to develop games for Mac when so few Mac owners are gamers.
Way to miss the joke. :P Though, point of fact, OS X is based on the Linux kernel, so claiming OS X is "more powerful" is a bit of a stretch.
to get it to work with the port i posted you need to change the game from fullscreen to windowed, then when you start up again after quiting you need to go to fullscreen and back into windows (directx9 is the only option that starts the game)
just to add to the flame wars, do you think WoW would be the giant it is without a mac version?
To Mac users:
I downloaded and ran the Civ5 demo and it seems to work fine on Boot Camp, Win XP SP3. The video settings are very low by default, I cranked them up to medium and it was still fine. My system specs are earlier in this thread.
I'll be buying the game later from Best Buy (I have some rewards points). Good luck!

Incorrect. OS X is actually a derivative of BSD which is faster and more stable. In addition OS X qualifies as UNIX while LInux does not!

I'm successfully running Civ V on my Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon with boot camp and Windows XP Service Pack 3.
It installed and ran with no problem at moderate video settings. No lag, no crashes.
I'm sure a Radeon 5870 Mac Edition will remedy it playing at only moderate (that and Windows 7 x64)
I am successfully running Civ 5 demo on a 2 year old mac mini with SP3 on it...
the mouse is blinking in and out of existence very fast.. anyone have any ideas?
How are you running it? Is it in crossover, vmware, dualboot, or steam(pc)
Using bootcamp I am in my Windows partition, The rest is exactly as I would run it if this was a windows machine (Steam)
Do you have the latest version of directx and your video drivers?
I think I was forced to get DX9 when i downloaded it and I assume it gave me the newest version. I updated my driver for my card as well...

I have also tried to mess with the mouse acceleration settings and the mouse effects setting with no change.

Here too, iMac running on boot camp, XP SP3, Intel Core 2 Duo T7700, 2,40Ghz, 1,98 GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT. No problems on low settings, will boot them up as I go along.

I am running in my i5 iMac (first gen 27 type) using Parallels. I have dedicated 3 processors, 256mb video (4850) , and 4gb to XP/SP3 for that instance.
What I have noticed.
1. Periodically parts of the map go black, and tend to stay that way regardless if I move a unit into it. This is the only real problem I have with the game.
2. It loves to peg the processor
3. The movie at the start is very hard to interrupt, but I can do it.
4. Since I have Windows in a "window" it tends to resize a bit as the game cycles between movie, menu, and game.
I have not tried it in pure bootcamp, will do so in a bit. I did blue screen the parallels instance while in the CIV menu - but that is easy to shut down and recover from. Got an IRQL_NOT_LESS_EQUAL or such.
Any ideas if I can push more memory into XP or should I just go to 7?
I upped all the settings to maximum and it still plays great!
I have a Radeon HD 3870 with 512megs of RAM.
I walked away from the computer for a while and came back to see it had crashed. Then I realized I forgot to turn off the standby mode in Windows. I turned that off and now's it crash-free.
I really like the game, BTW!
not anymore man , this was a long time ago , nowadays anyone can have a mac , and can run almost any "regular" game , imac 27" can handle almost any game.
I'm installing the Demo via Parallels, I'll let you know how it goes...
Civ 4 used to go black on me, I changed the screen resolution in game and that usually fixes the problem, you can change it back afterwards
Anyone can have a Mac, but it is still a very small portion of the market. Windows has like 85-90% of the total market share in terms of OS being used. Especially since there are solutions to run games on Mac, many companies simply do not bother to port to Mac, the target audience is smaller and a portion of them are probably running dual boot/VM/etc to play the game anyway.
Macs are PCs too. Maybe a little more shiny but it's the same thing. :P
