Same issue here with a ATI Mobility Radeon X1400, with the Wonders, Tech Tree and the tile selection in the city screen. I realize it is unsupported hardware, but considering other icons look fine it looks more like a problem with the low settings to me.
I bought the game from JB hifi and read over the cover. It said a one time internet registration was required but otherwise it didn't mention that installing from steam was compulsory. This was vital as i was willing to pay extra to make sure the game was on the DVD. Internet connections are lousy where i live, and that's the case for huge areas of Australia.
Anyway, i ran the setup.exe and all it did was start installing from steam over the net. It took 4 days to install and there really didn't seem to be anything much on the DVD apart from the steam installer.
Does anyone know if there are files there but they are hidden, or do they just sell you a steam installer disguised as a Civ V installer? Because i would have thought that was illegal.
Anyway, i've had lots of problems, but the game worked for a while but then it got to the point where the launcher would give you the option to play in directx 9 or 10, but either option just crashed to desktop, no error, and checking task manager revealed the cpu was idle.
I had a look at http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1440616
17# Game Won’t Install From Disc ? Requires Download From Steam
Some of the users have reported that the disc version of the game they bought requires download from steam. If you face this problem you can try deleting all the game files and re-install the game using setup.exe from the disk. Or you can refer to the tutorial below on how you can install the game from the disc instead of steam.
How to Use Steam launch options to install retail games from disc.
1. Log in to Steam and click on Library.
2. Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
3. Insert the first disc into your computer.
4. Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
5. Press Windows Key + R to open Run
6. In the Run window type:
“C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe” -install E:
And i substituted my DVD letter for D as you'd expect. well i became suspicious straight away as i don't hear the DVD firing up when i run that line, and as far as i can see it just tries to download the whole damn thing over the net again.
Does anyone else have a similar experience? Is the DVD a fake? I'm not really looking forward to blowing 4.5 gig of usage and tying up the internet for 4 days again.
Two more gripes I thought of:
- The Civilopedia is not accessible from the main menu like in Civ 4. Bring that back.
- There is no more clock. In Civ 4, the clock was one of the most important things on my screen, due to the one-more-turn pull that Civ 4 had.
Civilopedia shows that Longbowman has a range of 2, but it actually has a range of 3 - only thing that differences it from crossbowman.
I thought I might contribute to this thread as well. Hopefully the devs reads it. Here are the major and minor complaints I have so far. (I'm excluding glitches ans craches from this post - the devs should be very aware of them by now)
Critical issues (game breakers)
Compleatly broken combat A.I (A.I is unable to handle any tactic at all even at the highest levels. The worst example from my point of view was when two longswordmen wiped out every single player on a medium sized pangea at King level. But, as has been discussed in many threads - this is fully possible on immortal as well). (note: a game should NEVER be released with A.I in this condition).
Major issues
Defensive pacts do not work (I'm not sure if this is so for everyone but for me, they do never activate even if my or my partner is not the agressor)
Occasionally cities cannot be turned into puppet-states. You are asked to choose production for that city - but this is, of course, not possible.
A.I players are ready to pay huge piles of money for compleatly useless trades (like selling them resources they are not in need of, but which they are ready to pay
for, or exploiting money for signing onesided open borders (which A.I don't have any use for)
Minor issues
According to manual, barbarians are supposed to have the same level of units that the MOST ADVANCED civ has, but while Hiewatha had Infantries, barbarian still only had brutes, spearmen and archers.
Barbarian galleys don't do anything usefull at all.
Some aspects regarding diplomacy are not explained at all anywere. (What is a pact of secrecy?, what is a pact of cooperation?)
performance
Long wait between turns on high-end machines, even on small and medium sized maps. (memory leaks?, poor optimization for high end computers with several multi-threading cores?)

Finally after weeks and weeks of waiting to get the new and awesome Civ5, it appeared in the mail - of course I went straight to my PC to install it but what?! I first have to download the whole fricking thing (4gb) before I get to play.
Why on earth did I even have to wait all these weeks when the DVD is EMPTY anyways?!
This was a VERY bad first impression!!!![]()
it's been 2 weeks already...and we still don't get any answers...is that normal for firaxis and 2k?...to ignore the clients?....gues your new policy is "buy it...if it doesn't work or it's bad...at least one of us is happy"....GREAT PROFESIONALISM GUYS...REALLY!!!
Playing the persians (not sure if the bug is related to specific civ) with pretty much everything set to standard, (Prince, 8 civs, standard sized continent map) It is possible to get very very long golden ages. It seems that building the taj mahal during a golden age I managed to get a 60 turn golden age.
The first golden age happened due to happiness think that was about 18 turns due to persian civ and also the wonder Chichen Itza.
however with about 10 turns left on this, the Taj Mahal was constructed. This caused a 60 turn Golden Age.
Looking in google other people have also seen this

My largest problem , how they are not multiplayer animations!Everything else negligible.

Game is very slow but even so it works...until I get to 1966. Then no matter what I do it crashes. Playing Bismarck/Continents/Huge/Prince/Epic.
Also, last week, I filled out a problem report on another issue and received what I can only assume is an auto response saying I would be responded to, and most likely within 72 hours. Full week now and silence.
With all due respect, what the heck is going on with you??
Interesting - the civilopedia tells me in the unit description the Longbowman has a range of 3, but in the side panel it shows a range of 2, as it does in game, and when using them they only have a range of 2. What gives?
Well I just got one to attack at its full range. I sometimes have problems with getting attacks and moves to initiate because my PC isn't that great. And I guess the Longbowman can't SEE three hexes away but it can attack three hexes away. You have to get another unit to see the enemy first.

BUGS:
- Victory Progress > Score Details screen has no scroll bar to see more then 8 Civs (9 is cut off and you can't see the rest).
- Barbarians in encampments have their Fortify bonus change from 25 to 50% and back again each turn as if they are constantly canceling and re-fortifing.
These apply to the Battle Odds 'tab':
- Attacking cities doesn't show bonuses from certain promotions. I'm not sure which ones are supposed to work agaisnt cities since I only ever see Great General/'Siege' showing up despite ideal conditions for others, but either Flanking or Discipline is definately altering the projected damage.
- The Great General bonus doesn't take into account how far away the battle takes place and instead just how far away your unit is. If you're hovering over an enemy unit that is outside of the Great General's range then it shouldn't show your unit as getting the bonus.
Hi,
I'm having a similar problem as many others regarding getting Civ V to start at all. Both DX9 and DX11 versions crash during startup before the intro video, and the behaviour is similar even if I disable the intro video from the ini file.
One time I got the game to start by setting full screen to 0 in the ini, but even then the game crashed after just a couple of turns. Full screen mode hasn't worked once, and the anti-aliasing settings do not seem to make a difference. I've also tried re-installing everything that has been mentioned here and in other forums as possible culprits all to no avail.
I have the latest Catalyst drivers for my brand-new ATI graphics card (5750), and otherwise my rig fulfills and exceeds the minimum requirements.
The game seems like one buggy son-of-a-gun, and it's a damn shame!
Ok I had all the problems like everyone else on this thread. Got the Patches and it fixed 98% of my problems but I still can't play. Ok I do have a nvidea 8800 gt and I know that thisgame hates my card. But what happens now is when I start a game I can't move my units. They begin to move but then jump back to original spot and the movement animation continues. After I try to move both starting units the End Turn button appears, but it doesn't respond. So game over at that point. Also the view will jump as if I am scrolling accross the world. I can click on the mini map and it will take me to where I click, but after a few seconds the scrolling starts again. I have not tried the dx9 version but I don't think that I should have to. I paid the $50 for the game to play on my $250 card, I'd buy a dx9 version for $25, but come on my computers plays all games fine, crysis, Napoleon Total War...
One more strange piece of info to add. Before the patches came out I was some how able to play the game 1 time. I messed with all the ini files and some how it worked. The first try it crashed like 10 turns in. The second try I played 350+ turns no problems. I went to bed and was never able to get the game to work again.
Please help
Legions have a special ability to build roads.
When you upgrade them they keep that ability.
Also I found another bug, small one.
When you start a new game and put something on random, it just takes the last taken option or the default one if it's your first game.
Random is bugged.
Is anybody else experiencing this:
I have some problems with the textures, when I build something like a farm or mine, I don't really see that after I zoom in and out again, then it corrects the texture to what really is there.
Also when I load a game, all textures seem to be blank just with one color, I need to scrool over the land so the textures load itself up.
Pretty strange![]()
This one should be a priority. I've had three 12 hour+ games ruined by the permanent peace bug, in which you can never again declare war on a civilization after signing a "10-turn" peace treaty.
Hey guys, what happened here?
My Civilopedia doesn't tell me half of what I need it to (WTF is a "Pact of Secrecy?"), the AI is RETARDED, I had to spend a day de-bugging the graphics,
etc etc etc.
Listen, I understand that the whole Civilization experience was to be "streamlined" but cutting back on the individual functions wasn't supposed to be a cutback in the overall quality of the experience.
There are simply too many Quality Assurance issues with this game for it to be fun.
I love you guys, and splurged on the "Special Edition." Unfortunately, the highest quality product in the whole box was the "Art of the Game" book, and not the game itself.
I'm going to shelve my copy of Civ 5 and advise my Civ-loving family to avoid this game. Maybe you guys will have this thing patched up and looking good by Christmas.
Fire your Quality Assurance people.
- The AI is pretty retarded. When I play as Iroquois, it advises me to build roads on forest tiles, in my own territory. And when I have two cities, and they get tiles toward each other, they pick every single tile that is NOT a forest, ignoring all the lush forest between those cities, which is one of the reasons I picked those spots. I end up having to save up money to buy the forest tiles (which are never, ever picked by the AI, even after the cities have merged territories), which sort of defeats the whole point of using them as trade routes.
- When I sign a peace treaty with someone, and they give me GPT or resources that last for 30 turns, after 10 turns I get a message that the peace treaty expired, just like normal. But for the next 20 turns, I keep getting that message, every single turn, until the resource or GPT bit has also expired. Very annoying.
- How much science per trading post is the Free Thought policy supposed to give? The policy description and the civilopedia both say +2, but the game itself (terrain yield icons, city yield summary) tells me it's only +1. When I try to change a trading post into a different improvement with a worker (say, a farm), it gives me an effect of -1 science. Please change either the description (if it's supposed to be +1) or the game effect (if it's supposed to be +2). Such inconsistencies are really just horrible oversight.

I have 3 gold sources. I trade one for silk. After the trade, I no longer have any gold at all and lost it's benefit, so my happiness remains the same. Obviously that is not how it should work.
Also, this is the last time I will be posting here as it appears to be completely ignored by anyone related to Civ 5, Firaxis or, most important and obvious, 2K. I being to wonder whether there is potential legal action here, possibly fraud. In any event, 2K has lost all of my goodwill.
I just beat a Marathon game on turn 98 with Alexander and this achievement failed to register:
Conquest of the World
As Alexander, defeat every known player by 350 BC.
This one, I did on settler difficulty and it failed:
The Wonder Years
Build all the Wonders, across any number of playthroughs.
This one, of course doesn't work for me:
Magellan
Prove that the world is round by uncovering a connected loop of tiles around the circumference of the world.
The following three are asking too much of the player. Should probably be cut in half:
Land Baron
Purchase 1000 tiles, across any number of playthroughs.
Forty-Niner
Build 1000 mines, across any number of playthroughs.
Paul Bunyan
Chop down 1000 forest tiles, across any number of playthroughs.
The last two are asking WAY too much of the player! Should probably be cut to one-fifth or one-tenth:
God Is Great
Construct 1000 Temples, across any number of playthroughs.
Ruler of the Seas
As Elizabeth, sink and destroy 357 enemy naval units, across any number of playthroughs.
WorldBuilder will not generate any maps (except blank ones) if your Windows user profile name has foreign / non-English characters in it. If you try to generate a map from the scripts, it will act like it's generating something but nothing will change, and you'll still have a blank map (all ocean). This is Civ V with patch 1.0.0.20. I can post my system specs if you really want but with a Unicode bug I don't think it matters
The fix for this is to use a Windows profile name without any non-English, accented, or otherwise Unicode characters. Then I am able to generate any map I want using any script I want. (On Vista, you can create a new user profile by going to the Windows Start Menu -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage another account -> Create a new account)
I realize this is pretty low-priority compared to some of the game-breakers out therebut thought I'd post it anyway so if some poor user overseas is scratching their heads wondering why the map generator's broken, they can (hopefully) find this post. Thanks,

- There are a few major bugs I have confirmed that are going to hinder any historical mods.
- No calendar type works except for the default. This means no weeks, months, bi-yearly, yearly ect. Only default works currently.
- Custom made civs always appear as random if used with a pre-set starting location map.
I have already confirmed both of these, the cat is out of the bag. This is going to severely hinder anyone trying to create historical mods! Firaxis you need to fix these asap, you're not going to see any full conversion historical mods until you do.
Edit: Also I'm not some newb modder, I know exactly what I'm doing, and if you do as well, look at your code, you will find problems in these areas.
I'm sure you can guess which patch I'm using since, you obviously haven't addressed this yet.

This game is very easy due to the AI not being that smart and now that we have some difficult archievements you also want to lower them?
I prefer to keep them! Most of the archievements are already very easy to obtain. 1000 temple is playing at least 50 games, I love that! Only those that play many games can archieve it! 357 enemy naval units is quite easy. 2-3 games with lots of water should fix this one easily.
The first three will take around 15 games which isn't that much.
I don't want all the archievements in 4 games, that is just boring!
Also if you play with one leaders each time you should be close in getting the first three.
Agreed Peets, you know how easy it is to build 1000 mines? play about 20 games all the way through and your done. Some people just want everything to be stupid easy.
[Major Bug]
-= Never-ending and growing resources =-
I made trade with one nation giving him a free resources (ex. 2xHorses) for 90 turns for nothing in exchange. Just like that. During that deal that nation were wiped by another nation (NOT ME, so no war etc). After that I receiving each turn (adding to my resource pool) the amount of resources I gave. I can trade that "extra" resources and use it as well.
Entered into a 10 turn peace treaty about 100 turns ago. Was hoping I would be able to invade once the open borders ended, but I cannot enter enemy territory period. My units just cannot move in, no pop up for this will start a war.
Assuming this is a bug.
Just wanted to second the never ending peace treaty bug. I had that happen for the first time in my last game. That's the first bug that's caused me to search out this forum, as it's quite a show stopper.
Also, I had a game where by the late game I ended up with 5000+ horses in my strategic resources! This seems to be same bug that AsNied mentioned two posts above.

BUG: Upgrading the American Unique unit Minuteman to a Rifleman retains the ability "All tiles cost 1 move". Don't think that should be happening since most other units lose their "base" abilities when changing unit.

Maybe it's cause of the latest drivers (had that problem last year with a game)
Can you try that out? It might work then.
Ive played every Civ game that came out including the Alpha series. Civ 5 has got to be the worst of all. It is so bug ridden its ridiculas. I was playing the Japs on a large map just about to defeat my last foe when the game froze on me. No matter what I did it would freeze in the same place. When I first purchased it had to wait for a patch to fix the game for me to play it. I'm really disappointed in this game!!!!!![]()
