So they really mean the 21st eh?

Just pre-loaded the game, tried to open some files like readme and opening movie in separate apps...no go. I guess we can't see not one bit of it until 10am on the 21st eh? that makes me a sad, sad panda

  2. #2
That's steam's protection to ensure folks don't use the preload as a chance to develop an early crack and play. All the files are encrypted, and at unlock time steam sends the decrypt key to your computer, which goes through and decrypts all the files.

Would have been nice if the manual, at least, was viewable. Oh well.

Look on the bright side. It won't interfere with your work or school until after the weekend

I got lucky, the 21st, 22nd, 23rd is my weekend. I work a weird schedule, (4 days on, 4 days off, 12 hour shifts) but it worked out that I get a lot of time with the new civ right at launch. I'm quite pleased.

I promised myself not to play until the game comes out internationally too on 26th. But if I can't help it, I will just play on the 21st.

They may open it up for the 20th or even the 19th if enough people have gotten their copy before the 21st. Of course, I have my pre-order set to be delivered on the 21st(I don't necessarily have time to go to a store to pick up a game due to work).

haha... Although, I've got exams coming up in November, so they'll force me to study at school but civ may force the results down (but I didn't study for the last exams in May, but I still got good results including 201/201 in French)

Oh, side story, my birthday was on the Friday before the exams....

Am I to understand that if I purchase the game by clicking the "preorder" button on the following site http://www.direct2drive.co.uk/9611/product/Buy-Sid-Meier's-Civilization-V-Download, I will be able to download *right away* and only not be able to launch the actual game until Sep 21? I thought download simply was not possible until the 21st, which had me worrying that Id have to wait for ages (slow connection) before the download completes. Was I mistaken?
Also, WILL the game in fact "open up" on the 21st even when I dont live in America? If so, whats the deal with the airport Starbucks reference (I realise it was a joke, but does it imply that the game cannot be played outside the US before the 24th?)??

Very pleased if anyone can help me out :-) Thanks.

If you preorder the game, you can preload it (meaning you can start downloading the game right away). The game is going to stay encrypted until actual release. Then, it becomes available to play when release date hits (21st with yankees, 24th is the international release). So yes, you will have to wait until 24th if you aren't in USA.

You can open it sure, but don't count on playing it, this is a steam-integrated game, you'll have to wait for the game to unlock no matter if you bought they digital copy, a key from an online site, or installed it from a DVD.

Not true with D2D I have my preorder with them and clicking the preorder button does zip. So until it changes state to either Dowload or link to steam to download I'm locked out of preloading on D2D untill they say I can.

Edit - based on the reply you was giving to a person asking about D2D preorder not steam preorder

Exactly; that is the precise situation I am in right now!
Does anyone know anything about when the download WILL be available? If its not until the 24th, it seems completely pointless to choose to download rather than buy the cd, and I will have wasted £30

Doesnt D2D just give you Steam code so you can download the game from Steam?
If you have the games Key then it doesn't matter. You can register the Key with Steam and preload it now.

What are you kidding? I've already notified my professors that I'm dropping all my classes for the next semester as I've got 'more important' things that I need to attend to. My nation awaits my every command.

Of course being married to one of my professors is not exactly helping matters.

I smell a class action lawsuit coming 2K and Firaxis's way for stripping away weeks, or months out of peoples lives, not to mention all those 'F's that people are going to be receiving.

The governement of the different countries are going to see something like this when they look back on the history of education attendance:

    Code:

                                . . . . . . x
                               . .

                             . .
                . . .

As of now, you can't get the game key from D2D. Normally it's provided when you go into your games list and click the button to download the game

But right now that button just says "pre-order", and it can't be clicked

Does anyone know if D2D does pre-loading? I've never pre-ordered from them before. I would venture a guess that they don't allow you to download, and therefor retrieve your code, until the game is actually released.

    EDIT

Nevermind, I just checked the D2D website and you can now retrieve your key for pre-loading with Steam

So is the game only coming out in the US on the 21st? and then everywhere else on the 24th?

Im going to buy the physical game, but I have a camp for uni on the 23rd!
If i cant get the game on the 21st.... and get 1.5 days of play... what will I do? My friends will be 2 days ahead of me when I get back!

I guess fate wants me to be prepared for camp and actually pass uni... lol

    Call me Desdinova, eternal light?

S-weat! Its running. Thanks for the help, guys. I feel like an old man amidst all this modern technology ;P
Now we're at it, can anyone tell me whether I will lose already received data if I cancel the download half way, or will it automatically resume (must I leave my computer on for two days, or can I do it bit by bit)??

Steam allows for bit by bit download.

    Super, thanks.

Another question has arisen while exploring Steam: what on earth are "achievements"? I mean, I realise that they "unlock" if I meet their requirements, but to what end? What, exatcly, does one achieve? What is unlocked?

Nothing, really. Same at the xbox achievement system and the ps3 trophy system. Some developers associate unlocked content with achievements, but not all. Doesn't look like Civ5 will. Some people just like the added meta-game of trying to get all of the achievements.

Since Valve didn't go as far as adding gamerscore with the achievements as well as not having any rules regarding achievements makes Steam achievements just an unimportant epeen.

All this talk about Steam activation keys and that “the game is going to stay encrypted until actual release” is getting me a bit worried. You see, I have a plan – please point out the flaws if any:

I live in Sweden (Europe) so I have to wait until the 24th. I have preorder my copy at a store in my town. On the 23 I will go the store, just before closing time, give the store owner a big smile, and then run home with my copy. Of cause I have taken a day of work on the 24th.

Questions: Will I be able to play all night on the 23? Will I have to wait until midnight when 23 turn to 24? Or will I have to wait even longer??

I'm glad D2D is making the keys available for pre-loading. I'll be setting my alarm for like 10 minutes before release Tuesday morning so I can brew a pot of coffee, get my Honey Nut Cheerios, and get playing ASAP!

Even if you go to the store to get your copy, you won't be able to play the game until it is "unlocked" in Steam. So you do have to wait till its the release time (forgot what it is).

Wasnt sure if Id be making any sense, but am glad I did

About the achievements: thats pretty much what I thought. They can be ignored, then; thanks

To the Ninja Swede: As far as Ive understood, nothing will happen in Europe until 10 am GMT. Spend the morning of your day off stocking up on supplies for the weekend and board up your windows and front door.

My copy has now finished downloading, and Steam tells me its good to go. Does this really mean that at 1200 hrs of September 24th, Ill be able to click the "play now" button, and the game will launch? Nothing more (gamewise) to prepare?

No, it means that at whatever time the game unlocks for you, Steam will need to download at least a small file to activate what is on your computer. Depending on how heavy the demand on Steam is at the time, and how prepared they are for it, that will either be quick or take some time to complete. Most likely, though, it won't take much time.

    10am GMT?! You're kidding right?

This means Australia and Asia can only play it at 7pm!

Could Greg please confirm the proper unlock date for the international release, or if it is a local unlock time?

Don't worry about it mate, I'm pretty sure there will be a local unlock time for the Australia/Asia area, we Europeans will end up being the last to get it

No, we've worked out it's a unified int. unlock of midnight GMT.
