Just How is BioShock an RPG?

I mean, I see no RPG elements whatsoever. I hate RPGs. Kinda ticks me off when people call BioShock one. Is it because of Plasmids, or something different?

I do not consider Bioshock to be an RPG. It's obviously OBVIOUSLY an FPS.

Listen to the newest episode of Irrational Interviews, they discuss a lot about what qualifies as an RPG:

    Episode 2: Brian Michael Bendis

The only RPG elements are the upgrading and customization of your arsenal based on preference (albeit there are clearly set combinations that work).

tonic/plasmid choices and weapon upgrade choices(more so in B2) add a little rpg element but that would make it a hybrid FPS at best.

Could you please sum it up for me? I absolutely hate podcasts.

These are pretty good and it's short (less than a half-hour) but I'll try to see if I can at least pick out the part where they're specifically talking about what defines an RPG. Give me a minute.

EDIT: I actually listed the wrong podcast (I guess it's good you didn't listen to it ) you want to listen to this one between 22:06 and 28:38

It's definitely not an RPG. More of a horror/thriller FPS.

According to GI article it's seems BI's heading more towards the rpg element of gameplay. Sounds exciting. No more gene banks and the game decides what plasmids/vigors you get later based on earlier choices so lots of chance for replay value.

If someone were to call Bioshock an RPG, I wonder what that someone would call Fallout. A super-RPG?

Now, I am, in no way, saying that Fallout is better than Bioshock, but Fallout is CLEARLY an RPG (or RPG/shooter hybrid).

The term "RPG" is tossed around allot, I don't think there is actually a solid definition for it anymore.
Bioshock isn't an RPG but some say it has RPG elements rather than being a ‘pure FPS’ because you customise the character thru tonics and plasmids and you have some control of what type of person you are playing with the whole moral choice thing (little sisters and NPCs).

Well the point is that they're experimenting with the gamelplay types; they're mixing and matching rather than just sticking to one thing. Many of the best films have done the same thing, Star Wars redefined what a sci-fi film could be by introducing action and adventure elements as well as strong characters, and many of Christopher Nolans films don't fit properly in any one box (The Dark Knight is a drama-action-thriller-crime movie).

Games are maturing as a medium and so it's very good that developers are experimenting with their titles and are confident enough to break the rules. An RPG is not just a Lord of the Rings rip off where you spend half the time flipping through menus; now that people are beginning to break out of the mold we're seeing that RPGs can be so much more. The same thing goes for shooters, shooters are not just a game with beefcake space marines running around killing aliens.

BioShock is primarily a shooter, but it also has elements of survival horror and RPGs. The point is not so much what gameplay box it fits into, but how it's broken out of those conventions to become something bigger than that.

Illusion and Manic sum it up nicely. The BioShock games are first-person shooters, and I think few would argue it isn't. But they do have significant RPG elements. You make choices throughout the games, playing the protagonists as you want to play them, and they evolve accordingly. The characters have powers -- plasmids and tonics -- that give them fantastic powers. There's a leveling mechanic in the characters (ADAM is refluffed exp), and powers and attacks (weapons) are upgraded, as well as health and "mana" (EVE). These elements are what most RPGs out there are founded on (for better or worse), and they're mixed liberally into the BS games.

Anyone that gets pissed about these RPG qualities or that they're called such, well, that's their problem. Doesn't make it so.

I don't know, I just ignore those people. They clearly have no idea what they're talking about
