    Bioshock Podcast: Inside The Animations

We've got our next podcast: EPISODE SEVEN: INSIDE THE ANIMATIONS

Today I talk with Shawn Robertson, Lead Animator, and Grant Chang, Animator, about the animations of BioShock, and how they were created and perfected.

Nice podcast, I some cool tidbits indeed. I found the part about the blending very interesting, I was hoping to hear about it since I've been very impressed with how smooth the animation transitions have been.

Something I found actually quite weird which I hope one of the guys can address is the comment Shawn made in passing about the limit to the memory for animations. Something like that has never occurred to me before; I don't really know how much space the animation files could be for this engine but from my limited experience of character modelling back in the days of Quake 2 and Half-life the animation files weren't that big. The issue back then would simply have been that of there being limited time and staff to implement a lot more animations than were eventually done.

Um... "Rosie" he means that one version of a BD right? Big Daddy? He refered to it as a she. I thought that "Rosie" refered to some aspect of the creature. Sorta kills some of the speculation if the BDs are multiple gender. I'm confused now... but it's cool that they throw grenades.

The "Rosie" Big Daddy is called such because it carries a rivet gun type weapon. What gender they actually are (or if they have a gender) I believe is left up to interpretation, but as the folks at Irrational spend so much time talking about these characters as if they are living, breathing folks (and admittedly, I think they see them more than friends and family), they often talk about them as if they are close, dear friends.

    Hence, the she.

Thanks, that cleared up a lot!

Edit: Thank you, Irrational, for making what looks to be a truely great game, and experience.

I really enjoyed this interview. BioShock seems to have some really fluid animation and I had always wondered how much of their stuff was mo-cap and how much was hand animated. I was glad to hear that most of it was hand animated. Mo-cap animation, while most likely helpful to the animators seems a bit too stiff to me, like the Polar Express and Monster House films.

I like the stuff with about doing the Animations for the Little Sisters with the person doing the actions playing Hopscotch and pretending to be an Airplane that would be cool to have the little Sisters doing that in the game.

I really like the podcasts because a lot of the stuff I all ready know, but then a little new cool bit of info is released and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
