You have to get $27,500 or nothing happens. You can either crush cars or rob stores. If you rob stores, rob the gun stores they have the most money.
What chapter is this?

I'm having a similar issue. I bought the Collector's Edition of Mafia II (Xbox 360) and I'm currently outside the place where i need to "find" joe. I have $27,514 and the entrance door is not letting me in. I tried going around back but the door doesn't even have an "open door" option.
Am i doing something wrong or is this a glitch?

There are two parts to this mission:
First you need $27,500. That is your half of the $55,000 (you and Joe). Then some things happen.. Then you need $55,000 to pay Bruno back.
I'm at the second part. When my savegame loads I have just shy of $55k and my mission is to collect the money. I turn a few cars into piles of steel and am directed to go to Bruno. Nothing I have tried will trigger the next step.
The red 'dot' is in the middle of the alley. I've run over every square-inch of that alley. I've bumped into every door and wall. I've run around the building. I've left the area and returned. I've driven a car into the alley. I've shot holes in every brick. I've gone out and made even more money and returned. I have quit the game, rebooted the computer, and started from the savegame. I have made the $55k, tried to return it, failed of course, spent enough money to have less than $55k so as to trigger the "collect $55k" again, made $55k and returned. All of this to no avail. I am completely stuck.

There should be a flashing door. Go on Youtube and find a walkthrough of Chapter 14 (as mentioned, I think it's this chapter) and look where the guy goes afterwards.
That door is not activated for me. Reading the comments on the YouTube video, I'm not the only one. Appearantly restarting the chapter is the solution.
I'm having the same issue, i read as well that you may have to restart chapter, i also heard that it's bugged and you cannot earn the money by robbing shops? (even though it tells you to) and that you must earn tthe money by wrecking cars for Bruski...

I robed a gun shop then got two cars crushed and it worked perfectly for me. Though now im stuck on the loading screen after you pay him pack. It very annoying.

I think that's the idea. His assistant's name is Isaac. He speaks with that kind of accent also.
I always thought that Sam, Saliarie's consigliary, looked Jewish. I guess Sam could be short for Samuel, which I believe is a Jewish name (not entirely sure).

Yes I had the same problem. After searching on the internet I found out you have to start the mission over and only smash cars, you cannot rob stores. I really hope someone got fired over this.

Make sure you have da money then go'round back it's that simple.

i have the money and turned it in to bruno. the problem is the game freezes everytime after that at the loading screen.
The game frozes after id paid back the money to bruno, after this, the game was "loading to dead" i had to kill the Prozess, after this i lost ALL my SAVEGAMES!

I don't understand. I forgot how much I got from that guy at the Docks, when he ran away and you had to search his office and got the money, I rushed so I didn't see the amount of money I got properly. Anyways the bug is that you can't open the door or there is no cutscene when you get to the checkpoint. even though you have $55,000 do you still have to earn another $25,000?
^No. All u need is $27,500 (you and Joe have to split the 55K). You get $20,000 from raiding Derek's office, just don't rob ANY stores to get the remainder of your half of the debt or the mission seems to glitch.
Just crush cars and you'll be fine.

I have A similiar problem. When I pay Bruno back it goes to the load/save screen where it has game info and won't continue it jst stays on that screen and isn't Frozen.
If anything happens, restart the chapter. Worked for me. (:
if that doesn't work, don't rob stores. Might take longer (unless you drive around the Falcone & find luxury cars for Derrick)
The Chapter 14 problem on PC should no longer be an issue, as the 2nd (I think?) patch supposedly fixes it.

i have ps3 and same problem. to get your money DO NOT rob shops. just crush cars to get the money. there is a bug in the game and only way i have found around it is not to rob shops for my 27,500
I haven't got this problem but i'm running the game on pc. are you running the game on XB, Ps3 or PC? it might be a bug or you haven't got money enough
