Listen, Bioshock 2 was "ok." But let's be honest, it was contrived and full of holes and very much a carbon copy of BS1 in terms of gameplay mechanics. And please, don't say "but it had this and that and you forgot about.....yada yada yada." It was the same game, just a new storyline and a few tweaks. We got to walk on the ocean floor...whoopee.
But with the latest revelation of Ken Levine's truly revolutionary successor to the Bioshock franchise, one has to wonder, is this why Levine had no interest in Bioshock 2? Did he want no part because he knew it was just a cash grab? There have been numberous complaints of Bioshock 2 being rushed to market. And if Bioshock Infinite is any indicator, it takes 3-4 years to create a homerun. Levine and his team have been working on this game since BS1 and they're still two years away! And 2K Marin pops out an inferior sequel to cash-in in 2 years time? Yeah...it just proves that 2K "corporate" had no interest in doing things the right way. They told Levine "yes, you're our cash cow, but we need something now...go back to your corner and work on whatever....we'll talk to you after we butcher your baby."
And Levine is using Unreal Engine 3, an actual progression in terms of graphics rendering. I saw many complaints that BS2 had no change in engine, but how could they, it was the same basic game....just modded. They would actually have to start over from scratch to employ a new engine....this would be far too much time and effort for the 2K cash machine. It really irritates me that I have to harken back to BS1 to really appreciate the series. I fully expect Ken Levine will bring me back into the fold, Rapture or not. As much as I will miss Rapture, I would gladly sacrafice it for a proper sequel to the best game I have ever played.
There will be those of you that hate on me for telling it the way it is. So give this some serious consideration before you go off half-cocked. I'm right. You know I am.
