    New to Civilization

I am new to Civilization.I have always loved games like this.I thinking about preordering Civilization V...But was wonder would I be better off getting a older one to learn about the game it self?Or when I order the game will I get some of the older games with it?And just how does pre-order work?

So you like posting in blue? I'll post in green.

There's going to be a lot of changes in Civ5. I've heard a lot about Civ5 being more appealing to new players and I'm sure you'll learn how to play it just fine. The Civilization series are those games where you don't need to have knowledge from previous games to actually understand what's going on.

It's going to be just more confusing for you to buy the old ones. You probably won't adapt well to the new features right away after getting so used to the old one. These aren't like those FPS where every game in the series is exactly the same.

    Following the theme:

The Civilization series is mostly just refinements and re-creations of the same game. It's not like Resident Evil where the story totally doesn't make sense if you haven't played the previous 4.

Er.... hold on. Lets try this again.

It's not like Super Mario Brothers where if you haven't--

    Crap. Um... Just a second.

It's not like Bioware's games (Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, Mass Effect) where if you skip a game the story doesn't make as much sense. Civilization is pretty much the same game from one version to the next. In fact, not playing the previous version just means that you're not going to be making the same mistakes the rest of us are as we try to play Civ5 as if it were Civ4.

Of course, if you're interested, Direct2Drive is selling Civ3 along with Civ5. However, I (personally) find CivIV to be superior in almost every way to Civ3. You can probably pick Civ4 up in the bargain section of some stores or if you feel like diving in to Steam early, you can create a Steam account and grab the complete version for (fairly) cheap.

But, as I said: Not required. You won't really miss out on anything. Well, nothing except however many hours of Civ4 you could fit in between now and Sept 21.

Depends on who you order from. If you pre-order the boxed version (from Amazon, Gamestop, or any "real" world store) then you just get a box as soon after release day as UPS/Fedex/USPS or your car can get it to your home. You slip the DVD into your computer. It installs Steam, installs the newest version of the game, and you're off.

If you pre-purchase from Steam, you give them money, they add the game to your library as a pre-purchase. At some point between now and release day, they will flip a switch and let you start downloading the game. For most large releases, this happens a few days or so before release day. You'll only be able to download the game, not play it. Once release day comes, they'll flip another switch and suddenly you'll be able to launch the game.

If you pre-purchase from Direct2Drive, then I'm a little uncertain. One way or the other, you'll be setting up a Steam account and registering a serial number to activate your copy on (or after) release day. Direct2Drive may or may not let you pre-download a copy of the game like Steam does. It would be nice, but we don't even have a guarantee that they'll be doing that with Steam orders, so we're even more unsure about D2D orders.

Now, its also important to note that some places are giving various bonuses (boni?) if you buy from them. If you buy from Steam, you get the Babylonians and some extra maps. If you buy from Direct2Drive, you'll get the first DLC package for free (2 civilizations plus some maps). Amazon gets you some maps and scenarios, I think. Sometime in the near future (Right Greg?) we're going to get a full listing of the outlets and what freebies they're handing out.

Actually..if you read my other post, I had said I didn't like the white on black...but this is much better. Different colours are much easier on the eyes.

For me anyway. Keep it up! lol

First of all, this thread made me laugh so I am going to allow the rainbow thread to continue, but normally posting an entire post in colors is not allowed (so keep it to this thread please!)

As for your question, Civilization V is fairly different from previous games in the series. You could go out and grab Civilization 4 if you don't want to wait until September to get started, but keep in mind that Civilization V will require you to relearn what you learned in Civ 4.

If you've never played a game like Civilization at all before, and you have a console or an iPhone or iPad, you might want to try out Civilization Revolution. It's much more accessible than Civ 4 for newbies to the series. It'd be a good way to learn the very basics of Civilization, such as city building, army building, diplomacy, and such. Civilization V is a much deeper and longer game than CivRev, which is why I suggest it as a stepping stone to the awesome that is Civilization V

I think this argument goes as well for Civ Revolution as for Civ 4. Just wait a month!

And yes, I refuse to go along with your color party.

You shouldn't get Civ4. There are more changes in Civ5 between the rest of the series and this one. As 2K Greg suggested, get CivRev, as it's a simpler version of the Civ games. You'll learn how to play. It's what I did.

What I meant was, Civ Rev is not going to teach you how to play Civilization V any better than Civ 4 will. But Civ Rev, as a standalone game, is easier to get started with than Civ 4 is.

So if he's just looking to get in to the franchise while waiting for Civ V to come out, I personally think CivRev is a better choice. Besides, a month with Civ 4 is barely enough to scratch the surface! A month with CivRev and he should feel like he's got a very good grasp of the game, and is looking for more (just in time for Civ V!)

Exactly. Civ Rev is a nice "stepping stone" for those new to the Civ series. It shows you the main concepts of Civ while keeping it simple enough for beginners. I personally like Civ Rev; I always found it to be a nice game to play, but I would usually find myself spending hours at a time playing it.

    Steam Civ V Purchase Questions

I set up an ID and password at the Steam store. I placed Civ V on my wish list.

When will the PDF Civ V manual be available for download?

Now, do I have to download and install the Steam package first before I buy the game?

I understand that Civ V uses C++ version 2008. I have C++ version 2005 on my PC. Will the Steam download place C++ version 2008 on my PC or do I have to download that from the Microsoft site?

Can I pay for Civ V with Paypal?

Once I pay for Civ V at the Steam store, will the game download automatically at some point or must I check their site and manually download it myself?

This is actually some general purpose Steam stuff that would be useful for everyone to know, so I put the response in the stickied FAQ.

Here's a quick link for everyone: Check it out.

    Talking

Wow, these colors are way better than white.

As for topic, I would say that you might not want to buy the older games, even though they are remarkably great.

Why can't we talk in colour on other threads? Why is talking in colour (mostly) forbidden? And why doesn't Firefox like the way I spell 'colour'?

Come on - Civ Rev was terrible - Personally, I think it was a cop out to console gaming - just my opinion.

Because you wrote it correctly in English. Firefox writes in American. You can probably set it up to read and write properly, but it might take a while

Well, I only own Civ Rev for the iPad and iPhone, so I can't judge how well the console version is. My buddy has Civ Rev for the Xbox though, I sometimes hop over to his house and play it (although I haven't played it that much).

Overall, it seems fine to me. Granted, it's not as in-depth as the PC version of Civ, but it's perfectly fine as a "stepping stone" for those new to the wonderful Civ franchise.

The problem I have with CivRev is that it's too simple. I've played Civ4 so much that when I play Rev I just look at it as dumbed down or incomplete. I'm guess I'm just too smart to play it.

Agreed. But that's how it's supposed to be. If it was't "dumbed down" then how could newbies to the Civ series get started?

Even though it's dumbed down, Civ Rev will continue to be an enjoyable game. It's a casual game in my opinion. You don't have to spend hours strategizing, but the core concepts for which Civ is so famously known for are still there. All in all, Civ Rev is a fun game.

Somehow, this is not what I think of when someone refers to "colorful language"

And, to agree with what has already been said - Civ V will be different enough from previous versions that it would be best to wait until September. Do not be intimidated, though: Civ has 7 or 8 difficulty levels from "very easy" to "nigh impossible", so you can start slow and build your way up.

That was a terrible pun and you should be ashamed of yourself. Actually, I'm just jealous that I didn't think of that joke first.

But on a serious note this will be my first Civ game that I play and try to learn very well. Well I have Civ Rev for xbox but that one is nowhere near as advanced and the pc ones. Its still fun though. When I first get Civ 5 I'm gonna play a one versus one with the AI on the easiest difficulty setting just to learn the ropes of the game and learn build orders, teching, city placement, all that good stuff. Then I'll crank up the difficulty to test out some strategies I come up with

On topic, dont buy Civ 4, Rev or any other, just wait for Civ V, it'll be great and i guess there will be a tutorial so it will teach you the basics
