It was my intention to put this into an existing thread, but to be honest, I was utterly unmotivated when I saw that there was an endless line of threads per page, destined to *****ing about pretty much everything that has happened to you since birth.
I have been playing the Mafia II demo for 8 hours now, according to Steam. I have enjoyed every single aspect of it. Of course, there are a lot of things that could be fixed in order to make en even greater experience, but you know what? I'm not worried about them, because in the end, I had a ****load of fun with the demo, even more so than I did with Mafia I 8 years ago. So, yes, I have been waiting for this game for 8 years. Has it been a disappointment, like most people here claim? I have no ****ing idea whatsoever yet. All my comments and expectations can only be based on a 10 minute demo that, anyways, as I stated before, blew my mind.
This demo is the only game installed on my Hard Drive as of now, and it's the only thing I need to play. I have fun from the minute I walk out of that house 'til the minute I get the "Mission Failed" or I get ambushed by the cops at the bridge, and that, sirs, is making a fun game.
I lied earlier before...I actually have Far Cry 2 installed here too, but it's a game that, even as amazingly designed as it may be, both graphically and technically, it's a game that lacks the fun factor in a big bad way for me, although not in total. A lot of games have passed through my Hard Drive without love or glory, such as Singularity or the latest Prince of Persia...Big AAA titles that look and play great, but I just can't find that engaging to keep playing.
It's something that even happened to me with GTA IV once I was done with the story.
It's something that never happened to me with Mafia I. It's something that so far hasn't happened with the Mafia II demo. And, again, I think it might be because for me, this is the most fun I've had in a long time, regarding video gaming.
So I'd just like to thank the people at 2K. To be honest, I was afraid this game was going to blow my computer up with pretentious hardware requirements (Which for a moment there, it almost did, but because I needed to change my CPU's Thermal Paste), but it works dandy with everything maxed out, even Physx (I disabled the Clothing Module for pedestrians and such), so I'll be able to enjoy this game just fine until I can get a 460 or something. I'd like to thank them because they never disappointed ME. This game shines in every way it should: The characters look and feel authentic, and as such you can relate to them (I almost feel guilty every time I skip a cut scene to keep playing), the firefights are fierce and really pack a punch with all the flying debris and such. The Sound Design is awesome, and firefights reinforce this. The city is amazingly beautiful, and just in a Demo they've showcased how much variety we can get in a limited space.
Some things are a bit annoying, such as the pedestrians reactions to firefights (They seem oblivious most of the times) or the lack of hit detection, or rather, reaction (Getting shot in the leg and limping, etc.), but I'm under no circumstances making this a "Things they dumbed down from Mafia I" thread, because it's simply not relevant to me.
So, there you go. Those are my two cents. I'm sure a lot of people will agree with me on this one, not because we're Mafia fanboys, but rather because we can see what a fun game this is. You don't need a Clothing System in which you can change the color of your suit, fedora and it's stripe in order to make it feel authentic, not to mention, fun. You need what Mafia II has and can be named: An engaging story, characters, and mechanics that really work, both in shootouts and hand to hand, most importantly, resulting in FUN game-play.
This, sirs, is enough for me.
