Um...what if a balloon in Columbia popped?

Like, if somebody accidentally shot one of the balloons supporting a building. Pretty risky just to have them out in the open, unprotected like that.

    1. Probably covered in some sort of tough leather.

    2. There are most likely tons of them.

Another one would get blown up to replace it.

The building you see fly past you in the trailer has six balloons on it that work like hot air balloons. I don't actually know this as fact, but they can probably handle a couple small punctures (assuming they're still being pumped with hot air) before too much heat is released and the balloon collapses.

Also, if one were to be popped, from what I can tell, there's nothing that would send out an emergency balloon until the damage can be repaired.

You also have to remember that Columbia is falling down. That's like... the plot.

So, they obviously made some bad choices during the creation of the city.

Well, it's part of the game that the city is falling. Moreover, there was some talk about being able to destroy parts of the city. Whether or not this will happen when the game comes out (it's hard to say given that it is two years away and all) is yet to be seen.

Well you know what happens when a balloon pops. Maybe they tie off to other parts of the city (rail car tracks). So it could be supported up for a while until it gets repaired.

It's really tough to just pop one of those balloons. plus its probably protected by Some thick substance like Grathius said.

If we have unbreakable glass in Rapture, why can't we have balloons that are hard to pop?

Haha seriously, that doesn't make any sense in my mind. WTF is with that glass? haha

    Bioshock magic I 'sppose

  11. As mentioned I think we're to presume the balloons are made from a very thick material of sorts that can withstand general wear and tear, birds flying into 'em, rubbing etc.

Could they however withstand someone trying to sabatage them? With a knife or something of the sorts? Think we'll see something like this in-game.

If One Popped, That would be f*cking fun trying to get out of that pickle.
    pity its 2 years away.

Whats worse is that if you think about it the balloons are supporting the structures from the bottom so if one popped then depending on the size and height of the structure theres a chance it would flip upside down before it started to fall. Now that would be horrible if you were inside lol.

I suppose they could have some low-tech failsafes in place. I'm sure at least a few of you have witnessed the needle-through-an-inflated-balloon trick, where the outside of the balloon is coated with a sort of gel (vaseline perhaps) and then a needle is put through it and pulled out again without any popping or deflating. The gel is enough to re-seal the hole: while the pressure in Columbia's balloons would be almost mind boggling, perhaps they could condense a substance thick enough to flow over and maintain a seal in the event of a puncture.

This work around would obviously not work for a large break, like, say, an anti-aircraft shell, but even then there are options. Spare balloons could be hanging un-inflated inside of each larger balloon, ready to do their part via alternate airflow in the event of emergency. However the issue of stability, as mentioned a post or two above mine, still rears its ugly head. And I maintain that, short of fuel usage, this stability issue would be Columbia's biggest problem.

On the topic of Columbia falling, I have read that it is 'falling from the sky'. But is this phrase intended to mean that it's *doomed*, or is it merely a reference to its method of staying aloft: that is, how each building waits until its balloons deflate enough for the whole thing to start falling until activating its burners?

If it popped then the city would fall eventually landing in the ocean and we'd have Bioshock 1.

Yeah, I know! I sometimes wonder what would happen if the glass in Rapture cracked!

Kinda OT but kinda related... the "city" does seem to have sections or maybe they're airships/airhouses that have the ability to detach / fly themselves based on the trailer, so I was wondering about that, you could just leave the city and fly away.

Back on topic, if there was any type of modularity (and it's not just airships that can fly around the main structure), if a section was sabotaged you could dump that section once evacuating it.
