Thread: Fix for people with low frame Rates :)

Fix for people with low frame Rates :)

    Hi Folks,

Some of you may know about this fix, but I was really upset at the frame rates until I realized what the problem was.

This is for you Nvidia folks that may be wondering why the game is running slow.

I downloaded the steam demo, and part of the installer installed the newest version of Physx, problem is that is installed in in CPU mode, so the game was not using the GPU to render the physics (overloading the CPU and causing low frame rates).

The simple fix for you NVIDA Steam demo folks that may be in the same boat is to uninstall your physx and reinstall Physx manually from your Mafia II steamapps folder under the 3rd folder

In my case it was here:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\mafia ii - public demo\3rd

Now the game runs rock solid 60 FPS and now the game is amazing. Cars are easier to drive, and the Shooting is easier to target (along with amazing visuals)

Good luck, if this helps one person my work is done

That all sounds like a pain, I just overclocked my cpu to 3.83ghz from 3.4ghz... Now I get faster speeds but I think I might be killing my Amd Phenom II 965 chip computers running hot as hell and I don't have any other cooling besides stock cooling!

    What sounds like a pain.
    1. Click uninstall Physx (that was installed in CPU mode)
    2. Browse to the steam folder where the game is installed
    3. Click on the installer

Now you are done... Wow, 3 steps that take 30 seconds to complete... It is such a pain, how can life go on.

Hahah, some people... it was more work for you to say it was a pain than it was to fix it :P

P.S. I am running a 4.2 GHZ I7, and it was night and day between CPU and GPU... Unless you overclock your Phenom II 965 CPU to 15GHZ, you are missing out.

Yeah, I said it was a pain before I did it... It's simple you're right.

By the way, do you think its safe for me to leave my overclock at 3.83ghz with stock cooling? Its going to get to like 94 degrees in jersey today. I can definitely tell a huge difference between 3.4 ghz to 3.83ghz. I don't think I want to go back to 3.4ghz. Right now I have my gpu fan at 100 percent and I think its helping to keep my cpu cool too. But I could be wrong on that... Who knows.

Edit: That physx trick didn't work for me. I unstalled Nvidia's physx from the control panel then I reinstalled Physx from the folder you told me the one in the steamapps folder... And nope physx still runs poor in Mafia 2.

If you enable the PhysX indicator from your Nvidia control panel and play the game what does it say?

PhysX + CPU or PhysX GPU???

I dont get this, I understand how to get to my nvidia control panel. I just don't know how to enable the physx indicator in my control panel part. And I can't believe that on my 50 dollar motherboard I found the hidden overclock features on it!!! Gigabyte M68M-S2P isn't a bad motherboard like people said it is. I mean I got a pretty good overclock with it... Not bad for a 50 dollar motherboard... Its overclock features were hidden though, I had to press ctrl-F1 to get to it.

Well done m8, great advice, just played the demo with physx on high, smooth and no stutter whatsoever on my 480 , before i had to have physx set to medium

I tried to Capture the PhysX + GPU indicator, but the screen capture would not capture that overlay.

As you can see from this image, I am running at 60FPS (Vsync enabled) @ 2560x1600 resolution with all setting MAXed and On including Physx, antialising and ambient occlusion .
If you are not seeing the indicator, it is possible you are still running in Physx CPU mode.

In your nvidia control panel there should be a "3d Settings" menu at the top (assuming you are in advanced view). You click on this and put a check beside the indicators you want to see, then restart the game

What graphic card do you have??
Is it possible to play with Pshyx on medium with my GTX 260 OC.

I am not sure if the 260 will run it at medium...

I am running three GTX 480's in Tri-SLI, so I am sure that is giving more breathing room on the physx.

Come on...you have such a monster rig, i thought that you have some mainstream 250$ card.

The thing is, even before I did the fix, I was only getting 15 FPS... so I thought it would help others as even my system was suffering without the fix.

If it makes it more playable for me, I am sure it will help others as well.

Was wondering if forcing a higher AA would help on that end, but im at work and i can't tinker.

Do you work at NASA ??

I tested the trick, reinstalled physX, and it appears that I gained some FPS. I can put physX on medium. Thanks !

The indicator told me I'm running in physx-gpu, yet My fps still sucks...

And they said on the system requirements to the game that one gtx 470 is recommended for medium physx. Thats clearly a lie now since my cpu is overclocked to 3.83ghz so I doubt its my processor slowing it down.

I do notice when I start a game, my FPS is still bad (not as bad as before the physx fix) for the first 2 min or so that out of no where they spike to 60 and then stay there.

Perhaps the game engine does some caching when you first start the game loading things into ram.

If it does it through ram I might be screwed since I'm still running ddr2 800 ram...

Thanks kharper! Your suggestion fixed the very same problem I was having. I don't run triple sli like you, but I do have a 480 with an add in gf104 for physx.

Currently seeing 50fps average in the benchmark test.

Becuse the included physix driver is fubar
check with GPU-Z and you see is not enabled .. you can also run PhysX FluidMark to verify that is not working so the OP is so wrong (sorry dude)

I also used this fix and my frames have gone up and I now display PHYSX GPU under 3d settings. BUT, i have a dedicated 250 card for physx, yet when i use EVGA precision i see NO activity on the dedicated card. I want to be sure that it is using the dedicated card and not the main card (and yes my settings are fine in the control panel) any ideas?

    What was I wrong about?

    - There was a problem with the way steam installed the new PhysX drivers
    - I gave a solution to fix the PhysX drivers
    - It worked for people and myself

    Thanks for your contribution

Are you saying they purposely didn't want us to play physx in the demo so they gave us cruddy physx drivers with the demo?

Does this fix work for my Galaxy 9600 GT video card with 1 GB VRAM ? Can it also run PhysX ? I get about 50 FPS with settings maxed without PhysX and about 18-20 FPS with PhysX turned on medium.

    My specs:
    AMD Athlon II X4 810 @ 2,5 Ghz each
    4 GB RAM
Galaxy GeForce 9600 GT with 1 GB VRAM

I'm currently experiencing tremendous lag in game, with the "fix" it ended up being worse.

    I'm running a GTX 285 2 gig card.
AMD Athlon II 2.6 quad core
    DDR3 Ram - 4 gigs, corsair.

I get about 9-30 FPS. 30 in the beginning, and it just slowly dwindles down.
    This is with PHYSX off.

I'm pretty sure I should be able to play on LOW GFX with more than what I'm getting...

Well your processor is bottlenecking your graphics card, pretty hard. Tho u shuld get more fps. Hmm wierd. Are you using dual channel on your ram?

I'm also getting inconsistent frame rates.

    My settings:

    1440x900
    No AA
    8x AF
    No VS
    No AO
    Geometry: Medium
    PhysX: Medium
    Shadows: Low

    My configuration is:

    C2D@3.84 GHz(3 MB L2)
    2 GB DDR2 918 MHz
    GTS 250 1 GB(FW: 258.96)
    Windows 7 x86

    Any suggestions for better FPS?

Yea, i figured that much about the CPU and then looked into overclocking it, but then went SCREW THAT, cause I know I'll mess something up.

Not sure about the ram. It's DDR3 ram...?_?

I was also really disappointed with my framerates considering my system setup.

    Home Premium Vista x64
    AMD Phenom II 965 Black Edition(Liquid cooled) @ 3.4ghz
    4gb corsair ram(1666mhz)
    ATI 5750(1gb)

I knew as soon as the game loaded its first screen and I saw some proprietary nvidia graphics engine I would get boned in some way for my choice in video card. And that is really a shame.

I didn't have problems at all driving, that was very smooth even with physix on. My problem was the scene after you machine gun everyone, run into the second building. The first floor of that building was fine, even with the fire, but the second floor of the building had a noticable decline in frame rate. So much so that the game became unplayable at normal speed, it was like slow motion. I'd guess 20 fps.

Never had this problem with any other game before on this rig so I figured it had to be this proprietary garbage nvidia pawned on you. So I shut it off, and with everything else on maxed settings my problems with that scene disappeared and the entire demo played flawlessly.

I really didn't notice much difference. The only noticeable difference(aside from the obvious performance decrease when turning it on, was the flaps of the suitcoat flapping with it on, whereas they didn't seem to with it off.

I am sure there are some other effects but as far as gameplay went I didn't notice a lack of them.

The game played beautifully with physix off.

I really hope that you get this optimized for all video cards and not just nvidia, because I would really like to see this game with all the bells and whistles because my system should handle it with no problem. But currently nvidias proprietary engine makes the game pretty much unplayable, so that begs the question why it was included to begin with when it seems to be such a widespread issue.

Another question - has anyone with an ATI card tried reinstalling the physix as suggested? It was only recommended for NVIDIA users so I didn't bother trying, but I wondered if it yielded any ati users positive results.

you can't use physx on an ATI card, when you enable it, it's your cpu thats using Physx hence the slow downs, you can try adding an nvidia card as a physx card but im sure nvidia have disabled this in their drivers if you have an Ati card!

    Hello.
I'm also having performance issues, I was getting better frames before the new physx/mafia patch.

    965BE@3.4(stock)
    4GB@1066 DDR2.
    Nvidia470, single.

My benchmark with physx is 37. Without physx is 50.@ 1680x1050.

My system is clean, no extra processes running, I even check to see if I had any type of bottle neck going, but all my hardware is running as it should be. And all drivers are current.

Some people with slower cards are getting better frames then me! this is just silly.

I get annoying audio flickering with crackle Other programs and games runs fine and I don't have any problems with audio drivers and etc. Is this result of game lag or something else? FPS drops down, when audio starts to flick

    Any thoughts?
