What do you think?
Me likes! Represents every single aspect of Civ. Good job!
Looking very similar to the Civ IV boxes really. Still looks good though.
Best cover to date, i love everything about it![]()

A lot of intereting monuments shown there. I wonder if they will all be individually buildable. The Sydney Opera House is an interesting curio for civ! Does anybody know what that tower between the pyramids is?
I can't help but notice that the space ship is heading for the moon. Just a coincidence maybe.
lol,
is that the CN tower beside the Eiffel Tower?
and that has to be the Sydney Opera house.
The middle ages troops look weird. They're just standing there like toy soldiers. And what's with the yellow streaks? My first thought was laser beams...
All those iconic structures from across cultures and time are great though. Really brings out the game's unique flavour.
Looks epic! Not sure if we should consider the buildings on the boxart all to be available as wonders, though. I would imagine at least some of the ones on the boxart have been added in.
very nice. it doesnt look like there is thing futuristic on the cover.
but i really like how that BB looks! Big Guns shooting!
The box art looks pretty sweet. Love the background with the city and all the famous buildings.
Is that a humvee next to the pyramids and ocean though? The great general next to those medieval archers was a nice touch.
Overall, I love the box art.![]()
I don't really like the factory in front of Pyramids. It doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the scene, and sorta ruins the Pyramids.
The tower next to the Eiffel tower is the Pearl tower, and since no one mentioned it, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is there, and also Big Ben!
Eh, it's ok. They could have had a sphynx there though I suppose.
I really like the art. The background of the cityscape and all the famous buildings feels both modern and timeless at the same time.
The emphasis of the box art seems to be on the military aspect of Civ V rather than the historical aspect. That is, by no means, a bad thing; I just preferred the box art "message" of Civ IV over Civ V (ie Civ IV showed how humanity has progressed - "culture," while Civ V shows military warfare). It all depends on personal taste I suppose.
I love the work you did with box art for Civ V though. It looks great and I can't wait until it comes out in a little under two months!![]()
ah yes, I didn't look to close to the bottom of the tower.
I think the box art is somewhat balanced between culture (background) and military (foreground).
I love all the background details that is art right there. Leaning Tower of Pisa, next to the Statue of Liverty, among others. excellent work.
This box art deserves a new word. Epicatious.
Im really liking it. My eye goes straight to the battleship and the huge wave its on, i think thats awesome.
In the words of floating pants, epicatious.
I dunno... Is it just me or does it seem rather random and sporadic? Maybe someone can change my mind? I really do want to like it.
FG: Ok it's got military and a farm, soldiers firing at...?, archers with yellow lasers (I know it's arrows but at least they look like gun bullets, yellow indicates incandescence but they are not flaming), and with 3 modern soldiers at the front, do we need 4 more modern trigger happy people further back?
MG: ship is shooting at the spaceship? (I know it isn't but the way it leads the eye seems so, along with the battleship/city being foggy and the spaceship being clear giving me a little depth confusion), Pyramids! Ok I guess those are a must =P but the Humvee is a bit, huh? I'm Ok with the factory though it might be standing out a little bit. And the big waves (I hate how they remind me of 2012 (horrible concept -_- ), but that's probably just me =S ), don't quite match the really calm waters behind it (even a different colour).
BG: Seems pretty dominated by modern, western buildings. Only 1 predating 1800 and 1 from Asia but still modern. I can't quite make out the majority of the buildings so I might have missed something?
Overall: There seems to be a big focus on modernisation and/or military but it doesn't quite cover the 'huge battles' and 'massive armies' they want to represent in game. I just find the cover odd with its lack of elements from between ancient Egypt and modern stuff. A little skirmish on the left and the leaning tower doesn't quite do it for me...
Sorry if this seems rather lengthy and whiny but I mean no offence. The cover just doesn't seem too much like eye candy right now to me.
BTW this has no effect on and in no way influences my opinion of the game itself. That seems amazing =)

Also...Big Ben confirmed for wonder!
Wow!
Looks a bit like Civ4, but not by much.
Just Wow.
Oh, btw, the Great Barrier Reef is a natural wonder. The Sydney Opera House is a wonder. Add the great land of Auz already!
Love the box art, but for the love of God, where are the damn system requirements?!![]()
A couple of people have mentioned this now, and I thought too at first glance why the Sydney Opera House? Oz isn't even in the game (rightly!), and the opera house isn't really a wonder, not even a modern one. It's just a nice piece of architecture. And then put on the cover? With all due respect, it's out of place.
That big dirty factory is slightly misplaced too; I'd have put it a little further away from the pyramids, maybe on the other side of some troops. I'm guessing it's supposed to represent the industrial revolution, possibly a little out of proportion.
And the leaning tower of Pisa? A wonder? It's a building that, well, leans because it's not built on proper foundations. What advantage will it give as a wonder?
The rest is nice; I like the big wave from the battleship, or is that supposed to represent a natural disaster? Tsunami?
Im afraid I cant write down the good points, that would be too, you know, obviously creepy.
The pastel shades are nicely toned down, though, and all in all makes a generally positive and appealing image. Good job, just the wrong wonders.
Indeed it is and it dosnt look as good as the concept cover either IMO or any of the previous civ covers for that matter guess those 20 dudes that got layed off worked in the art department :/
Anyway who cares what the cover looks like its whats in the box that we wanna see![]()
Yes.
I like the overall atmosphere, but it's way too cluttered, unfocused, and possibly intimidating to random consumers. It'll just look like a random blob of colors from far away, especially when displayed with other PC titles like Starcraft 2...
Civ 4 cover was also rather confusing, but all the stuff was more neatly organized compared to this one. Civ 3 was rather plain, but at least it was clear and concise :P
The Aussies shouldn't be in the game, I'll give you that. But really - the Sydney Opera house - not a wonder? Personally I've always missed it. Aside from it being one of the most ingenious pieces of architecture, architecturally and artistically, of any that stand in the world today (that including the pyramids, etc.) making it more of a wonder than, say, the Three Georges Dam - I'd really like to see your list of modern wonders which outdo the opera house. Besides, aside from it being just a nice peice of architecture, it's just as much of a cultural center as Hollywood or Broadway, just with operas, not movies or musicals/plays - I'd probably put it in the game before them.
Just because it's a more impressive building. Man, it's a work of art.
That and it's more recognizable than, say, Broadway, though both are famous. I knew of the Opera house before Broadway as a child.
It's probably the most deserving wonder to be in it, that's been left out of the game. In my opinion anyways.
I don't know. Maybe tourism, commerce? Think about it, it made a s**t of an Italian town into a huge center of tourism, so income. It has a potential as a wonder in the game, maybe just a national one (thought it is one of a kind in the world, so I don't know) but a wonder nonetheless.
Although on the point that it did become the way it is by accident, it is kind of weird that a civ would strive to build it intentionally. But that's just details, details.
I like the box art. It gives one a sense of scope, and most importantly a sense of what the game is all about. You get the idea that it's about progress and conflict and making critical decisions.
Still wondering, though, whether the rumor is true that there is some advantage in buying from Steam. Some extra features or something, but that's in the Steam sticky thread, and Greg is getting us an answer.
Fine, maybe I've just got a problem with wilfully calling any building of merit a 'wonder'. Why not just call them 'Great Buildings' in the same way there are 'Great People'. Then that could even include crappy ones like the leaning tower of Pisa and nobody would mind.![]()

Umm.. Ugh.
I have to say aesthetically, this box art is just bad. Too much stuff going on, too random.
I realize the goal of the artist is to show the scope of the game, but it really comes off as convoluted.
Oh well, I really only look at the box for a few minutes.. Once the game is installed, the box gets filed anyway.
Best box ever! hands down!![]()
