What platform was it that you bought it on?

Hello, I bought a boxed copy of CIV V and played it through Steam without any issues. My wife then bought me the boxed CIV V GOTY for Chistmas so I installed it through Steam as well. Now my question is how do I take the original copy off my Steam account so I can give it to my brother so he can register it and play? I looked all around Steam for the answer and I just couldn't find anything.....even though I'm sure it is listed.... All I did find was trade a game but it is not listed in my games section as duplicate. Any help would be appreciated. Chris

As far as I know, Steam games are permanently tied to the account that they were registered to. I have never heard of someone giving a used game to someone else.

Just make a new account and activate the game there. Though he would be the one having GOTY and you the normal one.

You can't transfer/sell games to other accounts. Contact the Steam support and tell them your story. They're nice guys and I'm sure they will give you a refund for the (GOTY) game if you have activated it and you didn't get a 'duplicate'. You can then use that money to gift it to your brother through Steam.

I sympathize with the disillusionment of JoJoy and Nevets and others who won't buy the game on principle. But could I, in the most respectful way, ask that members open a separate lamentation thread since this one is for questions and answers, not declarations. Thanks in advance. And I'm very sorry for your predicament.
I am an avid "Civ" player and have been addicted to Civ 4 for ever or so it seems. Just upgraded my Comp so decided its time to go for Civ 5 I ve ordered the game from Play.com who seemed most competitive and look forward to playing it next week. I must admit not to reading all the small print as it has been a must have game for me for sometime however after reading the forums on "Steam" decided to research as much as possible - better late than never I have read more positives than negatives so am keeping an open mind on this issue and will come back with my thoughts when I have played with it a bit

While waiting for delivery of Civ 5 I thought I would download a demo from steam. No joy I am sorry to say. I could only get a white screen when pressing play. I shall try a different demo today but "steam" is not looking good"

The white screen is from the game, not Steam. So, at least put the blame where it belongs. Blaming Steam for this is about as logical as blaming the road for your car breaking down (after not changing the oil for two years).

I believe the White Screen issue is normally a sign of a system that can't (or isn't configured to) handle the game. Please check the minimum requirements and/or post your computer specs if you need help interpreting them.

    DLC maps not present in-game

Hi - sorry for posting this question as it has probably already been answered, but I have trawled through threads and all known civ forums (that I know of ) without finding an answer so I hope someone in here can help me.

I've recently bought the different DLC map bundle through Steam (Asia, Americas, Mesopotamia and Mediterranian) however I can't see them in-game. On my steam account they are present along with all my other DLC content (new civs and scenarios) which I have no problem using in-game.

On the 2K games support site it seems like others have experienced like problems but there are no answers from the support staff there as far as I can see...

Can anyone in here assist me? A link to a previous answer in a thread somewhere is fine.

Other info - running on a pc system, no other problems with Steam or the game so far, auto-update of Steam, system requirements met... anything else you need to know to answer my question?

I'm a huge fan of Civilization series and played all but Civ 5 and that wont happen as long it requires steam. Pleas do not try to convince me because you will fail, the only thing I want to know if there is a chance there will be an Stram free civ 5 any time soon?

Actually, if you get the Mac version from the Apple store, Steam is not involved. Stram isn't either.

Does that version not do internet multiplayer, or something?

Doesn't matter, the poster didn't mention that. He just didn't want Steam.

Yeah, but I'm curious, does the Apple Store version really not have Steam at all, or does it have some sort of hidden Steam?

Don't know, I have the Steam version on my Mac so I can play on Bootcamp when the versions are out of sync, or a new expansion comes out. I would presume it's locked to an Apple ID. But really: Steam is not involved.

Even if don't own a Mac at the moment it would be worth to buy one just to play Civ, so this is something I need to look closer at. Since I don't even care about multilayer will that not matter.

    And sorry for the spelling!

Thanks for the information; however I have to disagree about reinstalling CIV V. I have had a hard drive crash. After installing new hardware Steam will not let me reinstall my game. It keeps telling me this CD key is already used and kicks me off. My CIV V is a retail pack, (yep bought it new from Best Buy) and this issue has been going on now for months. I have a game I really want to play, and it sits on my desk.

I have been a CIV fan for years, from the very first issue. My last post to the support line was a little short, guess I am loosing my patience.

I hope you can help as the Steam Support does not seem to be listening.

    Curt

When you re-install Civ V, you don't (can't!) use the CD key. It's not even a CD key, as its not linked to a disk at all. Instead, its an activation key. The activation key is registered to your Steam account, so there's no reason to ever need it again. Instead, you simply need to re-install Steam, log in to your Steam account, open your games library, find Civilization V and ask to have it installed. You won't be prompted for a activation key, and there's no need to even have the disk around. You can install off the internet with nothing more than your Steam login.

Now, there is apparently a way to do a base install from the disk if you want to save yourself some time/bandwidth. I think someone posted the instructions on this thread a few pages back.

Curt, it doesn't matter which HD you have. If you have a Steam account with Civ already set up, just log in to your Steam account ( it will probably send you an e-mail with a 5-digit code so you will need to verify it's you logging in from a new HD) and it will reload any games you already have. That's one of the great things with Steam, I can play my games on any one of three computers (two PC, one Mac).
