    Honestly, neither.

  3. #83
None.. but if I had to choose I would say Ryan.
For the simple fact that he was more amusing than fontaine.

Honestly, I'd be on Atlas/Fontaine's side.

Because, unless I was one of the smugglers or "in the know" about Fontaine's true nature, I'd probably think he was geniunely sticking up for the poor. Even more so if we're talking about Atlas.

    *SPOILER ALERT*

I'm with Fontaine, no doubt. Ryan was a fool. Left his defence open, and moved all of Fontaine/Atlas' followers into one part of the city. Way to start gatherings, Ryan. All in the end, Fontaine ended up beating Ryan with Jack, which had all been planned.

So basically, I'd rather be with the cunning backstabber than the foolish leader.

I hate both of them. Ryan killed to keep in power. Atlas killed to make money. The reason I chose Ryan however is because he accepted defeat and let Jack kill him whilst knowing full well that the nearest vita chamber was turned off and he would not be revived. Atlas just went on and personally tried to kill Jack! And that was after lying to him, using him, and trying to force him to commit suicide.

hell yea that was awesome when ryan LET jack kill him.....any man that lets you kill him to make a point is BADA$$...I CHOOSE RYAN

I was on Ryans "side" from the start. At first I was only going for Fontaine to save his wife and kid... and then after that I sort of was in a trance. I believed Ryan's philosophy and saw him as what made his city strong and properous. Yet I was looking to kill him anyway... so naturally the plot twist at the end really made me question "yeah, wait, what. Why AM I following this guys orders?"

Whilst clearly the gap between the great and the small in Rapture became big, it was a free market, and nothing holding back those of the poor to make a name for themselves. They were all the surface's industry elite... what's stopping them?

They did not deserve Fontaine's kindesses, they were parasites, and giving in to those outlets antithetical to Ryan's beliefs is exactly what caused all the problems in Rapture.

i feel sorry for ryan. It might sound strange but I always felt like ryan was the victim he was so blinded by a vision of a perfect society where everyone would get exactly what they deserve nothing less nothing more that when he finally realized what he'd done it was too late . there's an audio diary near the end of the game called mistakes and it is quite touching if you're emotionally invested in the story.

They are both dead thanks to me, so neither I don't support dead men. Plus Ryan is weak, making some sort of 'statement' as his death seems like a waste of a true leader.

I would have to be with Fontaine. I'm not big on the whole laissez faire, Utopia sort of deal. Ryan was a genius, but he was also a lunatic. He became drunk with power and anyone who might have seen things differently would wind up dead. You have a better chance of just escaping from that hell hole if you side with Fontaine. That would be my main concern. Getting the hell out of a city like that.

I liked Ryans ideals but hated his actions. I hated Fontaines real goals but admired the way he did it so im in a little situation. But in the end I would go with Ryan because he was a good man who lost his only paradise in the world and if i gotten out of rapture i can always remember ryan for who he was BEFORE compared to fontaine who was an asswipe throughout rapture in his life.

I think that if I actually lived in rapture, I would eventually pick fontaine's side.
Seeing and hearing about the bad things ryan does to people who oppose him, and seeing the "good" things fontaine did for the poor and little sisters.

But knowing the things I know, I would pick neither. Maybe I would join the saturnine..

Kind off both and both because Fontaine let people do whatever they wanted yet he wanted all the power. Ryan was a man with a dream and enforced it harshly. Thats the way I see it

Ryan was not a "good guy" by any means. He was a dictator who betrayed his ideals and ended up murdering innocent people. Of course, it can be attributed to Fontaine putting pressure on him in the first place. Either way, they're both antagonists.

I'd side with Ryan - partly because my own philosophy is quite similar to his, but mostly because he was actually a good person at heart; one of the loading screen quotes, "Where in the world is there a place for people like me?", says it all. He grew discontent with the world and felt that there was no place for people with his beliefs, and so he founded his own city where he and other like-minded individuals could be free to practice their own philosophies away from the rest of society. Obviously, what you think of Ryan depends on what you think of Objectivism, but his goal was only ever to create a city where he and others like him could be content. All of his later flaws can be attributed to Fontaine and flaws in Objectivism itself, rather than Ryan's own character; up until the end, Ryan never really became "evil", so much as he was just desperate to try and preserve his paradise at whatever cost, and as the situation rapidly grew worse, he was forced to take more and more drastic measures, ultimately having to betray his own philosophy that had guided him to found Rapture in the first place. There's a tragic irony to his character - that he betrayed Objectivism in order to preserve it - and his suicide-by-proxy has always carried a lot of emotional depth for me.

Fontaine, on the other hand, was a cruel gangster who sought to destroy the hard work of not only Ryan, but many of Rapture's other residents. His motives were purely selfish rather than philosophical or political, and as we see when Ryan is killed, his ultimate desire is not only to rule over Rapture, but to escape to the surface and take over the world. If he had truly been a hero of the common man and wanted to depose Ryan for crimes against his citizens, then I could maybe emphasise with him a bit more, but as it is, he duped everyone and really didn't care for anyone or anything but himself and his own selfish schemes.

Personally I like both characters a lot. Though I don't really see either of them as "good" and I don't think I'd really be on either of their sides unless I was somehow being manipulated or if I didn't know what I know about them. I think I'd rather side with Tenenbaum or Sander Cohen...
