    Unhappy SP Error/CTD

    Hi all,

As the title says, SP crash then CTD. I can load the game fine. To note, theres no sound. I have tried logging in to both an offline & online GFWL account but the same occurs. I'll click on Single Player - New Game - the loading screen will come up, it'll start the music of which i'll hear max 2 seconds of and the game will be replaced with a white screen and "Windows error messages along the lines of "Bioshock2.exe has stopped working...". Then after i click close on the error message i'll be back at my desktop.

So you know, my game was purchased through steam.

I have tried various ideas to fix the problem, including portforwarding, placing my router inside the dmz or setting the game to launch as dx9, compatibility mode and running the game as admin. I have also tried removing the SaveGame directory, but its pointless as there is nothing in it, being the fact that i haven't managed to get into a game yet!

Anyhow guys, your help is much appreciated with this problem. I haven't been very lucky with games as of late, Sacred 2 just CTD'd, Supcom 2 is a bit disconnecty online, Ubisofts servers seem to be dead for Splinter Cell Conviction... I had just never expected a Single Player game to not work...

Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to read through the information, if you need more info ill happily provide you with it.

contact steam support / customer services & demand a fix or a refund,

you'll get no help from 2k.

this is not the 1st report of steam version not working - it could be that all steam versions are now broken by recent 2k patch/ recent steam changes but they are still selling the game!

I already have an email set up for steam, however i'd like to see if 2k can help me first, or if i can help them.

And yes, i do realise its not the first report of steam, unlike most people i know how to search a forum. It also wont be the last report.

How can Tech's for a game not be around their own forum anymore? 0o

    EDIT: Pm Sent to Elizabeth.

Also, i have contacted steam. I'll let you know how both avenues go. :/

well the Tech's collective performance was abysmal when they were here, so no great loss :-)

more solutions by far were provided by other forum members than by 2k.

steam will be far more responsive, I bet.

PS you could , in the meantime try settling bioshock2.exe to run in each of the available compatibility modes - I doub't that will work but it's something to do while you are waiting.

as for no sound - if you have realtek onboard, the fix for bioshock1 was to enable stereo mixing. - there'll be details on bioshock 1 board or elsewhere on here. maybe bioshock 2 needs the same setting.

Well, i managed to get the game going like a few others, by not logging into GFWL and not downloading the update it offers.

However, i have now reached the point of everyone else. If i go to save the game, it crashes like before, which means i cannot save the game if i want to play.

I know 2k people read these forums, so please do us a favour and locate the problem thats either in the saving of the game or GFWL. GFWL may look pretty but its rubbish. And surely if i download through steam thats secure enough? 0o

that's where you are wrong - they don't.
it's obvious both from the lack of support and from the lack of moderation. you could post links to unoffical patches ( that was done weeks back & is probably still here somewhere) , probably even links to pirate copies & they'd stay up because no-one from 2k ever reads anything writen here.

on any other board, posts encouraging people to go get a cracked bioshock2.exe which works better than the original would get you thrown off - but not here - I do it regularly just to test the waters and becasue why not if you've bought the DVD already .

my usual gaming mode is buy the game then install a crack & put the DVD away for ever. bypasses all the securrom crap & makes for a more pleasent & reliable playing experience. I have no interest in MP or in GFWL "features".

as for this exact game, I gave up with the bugged PC version & bought console version instead, beacuse of lack of controller support; though I did get a PC crack working OK, so I know it can be done.

I've given up with this game on the PC, as i have with 2k's tech support. A month between replies is pretty pathetic.

I'll either buy it on the 360 instead, or not at all. :/
