Batman Begins did not have to tie into Batman & Robin because it was starting fresh, and as such they were allowed to do things differently. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (the movie) was tied to the numbered Episodes of Star Wars by cannon, but nobody gave two blinks about the fact that it was crap because it wasn't a numbered entry, it was a spinoff. By comparison, Episodes I, II, and to a lesser extent III are still controversial because they were numbered entries that didn't honor the original trilogy.
That's the point I'm trying to make, XCOM is not being billed as a continuation of the franchise, it's a reintroduction that's being presented in a different manner than the originals. My point is that, in theory, this is ok because it's a reboot, where it would not be ok if it was a numbered entry.
