"Power civ" thread - but what about single play?

I have read through nearly all of that long and interesting "Power play" thread.

It seems to focus on multiplayer games.

But what about single play? Are the Chinese and Americans that great in single play? Or would the Japanese or Spanish be as good and as much fun?

I am a noob to Civ Rev, but not to Civilization. I still play Civ 1 (call it an addiction, but that game is so wonderfully abstract.) And I still have the book "Rome on 640K a day ". A real classic.

Civ 3 was great and I played online succession games with that for years on Civ Fanatics.

So here we are with Civ Rev and each civ is different. How does one choose the best civ to play in single player? It is a hard choice for me. (I like Spain and Japan and many others -like maybe the Greeks (don't they start with courthouse?) And the Aztecs.

Any thoughts you could share with me would be appreciated.

I don't think anybody will give you a hard time if you want to play America or China in single player a lot. They are both very strong civs in any format. But again, I have no plans to come to your house and tell you you're a jerk for playing China all the time in single player. Well, maybe if you're having something good for dinner....

Most noobs tend to like the Aztecs (start with 25 gold and auto-heal), Chinese (+1 pop everywhere is super strong - you can't really fail to take advantage of it) and the Japanese (seafood makes the decision between growing and teching an easy one - you do both!). But really it doesn't matter that much. Just pick a civ you like and we'll tell you some different ways to play it.

Some civs, like the Romans, Mongols and Americans, are a little bit more complicated to use. Some, like the French and Russians, are simply bad. But the AI in this game is a known quantity and very limited in what it can do. It can be beaten every time from any position once you know what you're doing.

In SP you can probably dominate with any civ. So it doesn't matter as much. It also doesn't matter as much if you still have a lot to learn and can't dominate with any civ---as again each civ will be almost equal in terms of a good challenge. Or maybe that was just my experience last year: whether I chose America or Greece, it didn't really matter b/c I didn't know how best to use those civs. And once you do know, you'll do fine with any of them.

    Hope that was helpful!

    Hey Sagwa

The majority of strats here are for mp. But if you can pick up some basic tips on rushing and expanding then most things will work out fine on sp.

The ai is fairly stupid really and once you have played a few times you will soon discover what it will land wont do. I have played way more sp than mp. I have won all victory types with each civ and completed every scenario.

As mentioned above once you learn how to win you will always win. It’s a great place to learn the game away from Zulu, American and Chinese rushers you will face online!! All of whom I hate!! Makes mp very short!! So make sure you enjoy getting the tech wins, the world bank and the united nations because once you start mp you will most likely never do them again!!

    Good luck.

What Maniac said is true. There are lots of threads about the keys to getting better at Civ Rev, and they apply usually to both SP and MP. Once you sort of figure out the fundamentals and get past the newbie mistakes, you will realize that it applies to both MP and SP. I only play MP now, with SP for practicing a new civ.

BTW, if you want to practice for MP, set the AI to King level. It's not exactly right, but it's pretty close to online play.

How do I set the AI to King or to any level?

I did not know you could change the AI level of difficulty only my level.

    Sounds interesting.

You have to select single player game (not quick game) there you can adjust the levels. As far as the original question, in SP the Zulu are the best civ.

On the IPad there is no place to select SP OR MP. Maybe You can't play MP on the iPad. Does anyone know?

The same is true if the ipod and iphone versions. By the way, when he was talking about changing to King difficulty, he meant the same thing you meant.

If you're only going to play the ipad version, then your certainly don't have to worry about any multiplayer considerations, but you'll probably eventually crave the next level of competition after deity becomes too easy. Then you'll need a console.

Where on earth would I put a console? I have a big Dell desktop XP. AND I have my trusted old, old Windows 98 desktop so I can still play Civ 1.

I hope they will put multiplayer on the iPad. It such a wonderful device and I can not stay off of it. LOL

The succession games for Civ 3 on Civ Fanatics were awesome and I really do enjoy multiplayer games. (I played Age of Empires -the Age of Kings multiplayer so much that I had to be forcibly removed from my computer.)

Civ Rev will be wonderful once I get the hang of it.
